Berlin, Germany - Kreuzberg neighborhood & Oberbaumbrücke (Oberbaum Bridge)
The Oberbaum Bridge (German: Oberbaumbrücke) links the neighborhoods of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, which were once divided by the Berlin Wall. In this video we focus on the Kreuzberg area, we only walked the Friedrichshain side along the Spree River where the old wall once stood. We then enjoyed walking around the bridge before heading into the Kreuzberg. It is a nice mixture of avante garde and counterculture types, along with trendy shops and cafes. We also enjoyed going into one of the train stations that are referred to as ghost stations and are leftovers from the cold war that divided Berlin at one time.

Berlin's double-decker bridge Oberbaum Bridge (Oberbaumbrücke), built in 1895, links the two Berlin districts of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain separated by the River Spree. Traffic runs on the lower part and U-Bahn trains (U1) on the second level. It was built on the site of a previous timber bridge built in 1724 when the construction of an elevated railway required a reinforced structure. The result was a seven-arched concrete bridge with a granite and brickwork façade. It is distinctive architecturally because of its mock medieval turrets – which recall the function of toll bridges and arches.
More recently the bridge starred in the Hollywood movie The Bourne Supremacy (2004) filmed on location in Berlin. Jason Bourne - played by Matt Damon - is seen crossing the Oberbaum Bridge in a Taxi on his way to the Westin Grand Hotel. A Cold War landmark of division between between east and west from 1961 to 1989, armed guards patrolled the banks of the river as a border area. The bridge was one of the crossover checkpoints from West to East only.
Today the bridge is adorned by graffiti and street artists' work. A sandy beach for chilling out in the summer has replaced the barbed wire of the no-man's-land and techno music is the distinctive sound from the scene in the reunited districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.
The bridge is also special in local lore because of the so-called water-battle event in tune with the traditional anarchist-bohemian character of the area. The bridge has separated the two districts since 1920 and since 1998 young people of all ages have converged here to fight an archaic-anarchic mock battle using assorted weapons such as rotten fruit and other harmless objects used as projectiles. The reason for the fight is unknown but it's taking part that counts.
With 1970's sounding names typical of the German agitprop resistance movements of those days, such as Water Army Friedrichshain (WAF) against Kreuzberg Patriotic Democrats/Realistic Centre (KPD/RZ) each side tries to defend the bridge and repel the adversary. A recent film, Die Wasserschlacht (The Water Battle) nominated for the Berlin Today Award (BTA) 2007 at the Berlin International Film Festival, tried to capture the origin of the combat trying to figure out how it all began.

Keko Yoma - Berlin (live acoustic in Oberbaum Bridge, Germany)
Alexanderplatz along with Berlin's city Hall start this video, I was in the former East Berlin area shooting this video from the top floor of the Galleria department store where there is a fantastic cafeteria like we used to have in North America back in the day.
You will see 1950's to 1980's East Berlin apartment buildings that were made as prefabricated concreate structures. These are about 8 to 10 stories tall and today are very desired for full time living as condos by people from all over the world.
I also added a view of the Spree River and the Treptower office complex where we see new modern looking condo buildings along with tourist boats.
This video was shot in September and early October so you can see the fall colors on the trees, it is beautiful. Go to Berlin, rent a bike, enjoy!

Oberbaumbrücke (Oberbaum Bridge) - In A Berlin Minute (Week 143)
Without a doubt my favorite bridge in Berlin: Oberbaumbrücke. Built in 1895-1897, the bridge crosses the Spree River and connects the lively neighborhoods Kreuzberg (former West Berlin) and Friedrichshain (former East Berlin). Being able to freely cross the bridge again is as symbolic as it is convenient and actually quite fun due to people watching, views in all directions and the beautiful structure itself.
I fondly remember the first time I crossed the bridge. It was my first night of moving to Berlin (the 2 months trial period) almost exactly 3 years ago (it was freezing then, too) when Franky Fuzz and I were leaving Hana's birthday party to catch trains home when he found out I had never walked across the bridge (or heard of it for that matter). So that's what we did; he with two bags of vinyl records, a guitar and an amp - me with big eyes taking this amazing city in. Later there was some Berliner Kindl drinking and another walk through the slightly scarier and iced over Goerlitzer Park - but somehow I made it back to my sublet and fell into bed thinking: yup, I could live in this city!
(And yes, Frank, I know I still owe you and Claudia the video from your wedding - you'll get it before your anniversary!)

The Oberbaum Bridge is a double-deck bridge crossing Berlin's River Spree, considered one of the city's landmarks. It links Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, former boroughs that were divided by the Berlin Wall, and has become an important symbol of Berlin’s unity. The lower deck of the bridge carries a roadway, which connects Oberbaum Straße to the south of the river with Warschauer Straße to the north. The upper deck of the bridge carries Berlin U-Bahn line U1, between Schlesisches Tor and Warschauer Straße stations.
