Cecil Theatre, Hull - Official Opening
Old cinema newsreel item to mark the official opening of the new Cecil Theatre, Hull, Monday 28th November 1955. The orginal building was destroyed by enemy action on 8th May 1941. The new theatre, which was designed by local architects Gelder & Kitchen, for their client Hull Cinemas Ltd, featured the latest techology available for both film presentation, and customer comfort.
Managing Director of the company, Mr Brinley Evans must have felt very proud as he watched the Cecil rise like a phoenix, and declared it to be one of the finest buildings in Hull. The Theatre had an impressive seating capacity. 1,374 in the stalls and 678 in the balcony, meaning that a total of 2052 patrons could be accomodated in the spacious, air-conditioned auditorium. At the time, it boasted the largest Cinemascope screen in the Country. The screen was mounted on a wheeled frame and could be drawn back, away from the apron to reveal a large stage. Beneath the stage were green rooms, and storage areas.
The new Cecil opened on Monday, 28th November 1955. An official opening ceremony was performed by Chairman of the Rank Organisation, Mr John Davies, accompanied by his wife, the well known actress Dianh Sheridan, before a specially invited audiance, after which the capacity crowd settled down to watch a special presentation of the first film to be shown, The Seven Year Itch , starring Marylyn Monroe.
A newsreel camera crew recorded the event, and the opening of the new Cecil was featured in cinema newsreels around the country soon afterwards. Mr Davies, was clearly very impressed by the new cinema, and said at the time, that the Rank Organisation, (famed for it's Odeon cinemas), had Nothing to compare with the Cecil !
Fool in the Crowd by The Odds from Hull
the odds performing fool in the crowd. Videoed at Hull University. The song was written by Stuart Matthewman and Keiran Moses, recorded at Fairview, produced by Roy Neave, This is taken from the demo tape that preceded the single released for their tour of Northern Europe including Sweden. At this time, the band line-up was Keiran Moses (vox and guitar), Stuart Matthewman (sax and guitar), Jonathan (twig) Leafe (guitar), Bill McKeown (bass) and Colin Brockwell (drums). When Stuart left, to later join Sade, the band morphed into Moscow (later Moscow for Pleasure). The single had a picture sleeve but none in that format made it to the shop shelves.
CNM Estates - KINGSTON REGAL
Kingston Regal will see the beautiful restoration of the interior and exterior of this listed Art Deco building and its transformation into a lively mixed-use building. Retaining much of the period detailing and features, the new design will include a conference centre, restaurant, dance studio, children’s activity area. An additional new building will contain office and small business incubator space, serviced apartments for short term rentals, and luxury residences.
Located in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, in the west of Greater London. The Regal Cinema was built on an extended site of the Cinem Palace (1909-1931) which was demolished. It was built by the County Cinemas circuit in a lavish Art Deco style.
It was taken over by Union Cinemas in 1936 and the name was changed from Regal Cinema to Union Cinema in March 1937. Union Cinemas were about to be taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC) and when they did the take-over, ABC changed the name back to Regal Cinema in 1938.
It was re-named ABC from August 1961 and in October 1972 the Wurlitzer organ was removed to be installed in the Musical Museum, Brentford, Middlesex. The ABC closed as a cinema on 17th July 1976 with Blondie and Adventures of a Taxi Driver.
It was converted into a Coral Bingo Club and from 1991 it operated as a Gala Bingo Club. The Gala Bingo Club was suddenly closed in around April 2010, and the building was boarded up, with all signage removed. When closed it was in excellent condition.

ABC CINEMAS ABC MINORS ORIIGINAL SONG
The year is around 1968. The place is your local ABC cinema. The venue - the ABC Minors Childrens Matinee, to which thousands of grateful parents dispatched their little brats with 1/- worth (5p!!) of pocket money that was a small price to pay for a peaceful Saturday morning! First up was the famous ABC Minors song, which complete with lyrics flashed on the screen with a bouncing ball projected from an old carbon arc lamp and slide lantern !
We are the boys and girls all known as..
Minors of the ABC...
And every Saturday all line up...
To see the films we like and shout aloud with glee..
We like to laugh and have our sing-song...
Such a happy crowd are wee..eeeee
We're all pals together...
We're Minors of the ABC.
After this thoroughly rousing number, the cinema's manger (or, most likely, the hapless assistant manager!) would host some obligatory birthday singing and talent shows along the lines of skipping contests culminating in a hail of flying objects from the kids in the audience!
All the British ABC cinemas have either been demolished or changed to the Odeon brand but, miraculously, an original 45rpm record was rescued from the projection room of a cinema being demolished which takes me back to the simpler childhood days of Saturday morning fun at the local ABC Sidcup cinema. Enjoy!

Air Raid Shelter - Fort Paull
Went for a quick ride out to Paull, to find the location of an old ROC post and stopped off at Fort Paull to record this structure just outside of the main fort walls. I'm currently trying to trace the owner of the land upon which the post stands, as it is securely locked.

Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon 1978
Werewolves of London composed by Warren Zevon, LeRoy Marinell, Waddy Wachtel, and performed by Zevon in 1978. The song hit the U.S. Top 40 charts peaking at #21, and remained in the Top 40 for six weeks. As the story goes, Zevon and Wachtel who were then working with the Everly Brothers, were approached by Phil Everly and asked if they could write a dance craze song called something like Werewolf Of London (title of the 1930 movie). One day, Zevon, Marinell, and Watchtel decided to have fun with it and started trading lyrics back and forth, and with some howling, they came up with the novelty song that afternoon. Though an official dance never came about, the Chinese restaurant mentioned in the song does exist in London's Chinatown. In all, the song made its mark on Warren Zevon.........Ah-ooooh!
Zevon, born in Chicago, Illinois, was considered one of the most offbeat and intelligent singer/songwriters in the mid 1970's. He was a trained classical pianist and often combined dark humorous and cynical observations flavored with romantic sentiments and biting social satire. His interest in the literary world led to friendships with many writers.
