Oh Yeah Belfast presents Volume Control
RUBY MURRAY Tribute Belfast Oh Yeah Music Centre
I'm in the foyer of the Oh Yeah Music Centre in Gordon Street near St Anne's Cathedral.
Stars of the 50s music right through to present rock stars are remembered here. The one thing linking them all is the fact that they were born in Northern Ireland. This exhibition shows the vast musical contribution coming from a small geographical region of under two million people.
A visit to this 'museum'/exhibition of Ulster rock stars is really a must see and do for anyone interested in our colourful musical history/highlights. Come down 'step inside love' and enjoy a bit of music nostalgia.
It's a unique spot. An Aladdins Cave of local music and memories.
Ruby Florence Murray (29 March 1935 – 17 December 1996)[was one of the most popular singers in the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1950s. In 1955 alone, she secured seven Top 10 UK hit singles.
Ruby Florence Murray was born on the Donegall Road in south Belfast, Northern Ireland. Her voice's distinctive sound was partly the result of an operation on her throat in early childhood. She toured as a child singer and first appeared on television at the age of 12, having been spotted by producer Richard Afton
Heartbeat (1954) — UK number 3
Softly, Softly (1955) — UK number 1
Happy Days and Lonely Nights (1955) — UK number 6
Let Me Go Lover (1955) — UK number 5
If Anyone Finds This, I Love You (1955) — UK number 4 †
Evermore (1955) — UK number 3
Although her days as a major star gradually diminished, Murray continued performing until close to the end of her life. She died of liver cancer, aged 61, in December 1996 in Torquay after a long struggle with alcoholism.
Spending her last couple of years in Asprey's Nursing Home, she often delighted her carers with a song and was visited by her special friend, Max Bygraves.

GARY MOORE Tribute at Belfast Oh Yeah Centre
I've come down to the Oh Yeah Music Centre in Gordon Street near to St Anne's Cathedral to view the tribute to guitar rock legend Gary Moore who I'm led to believe was born and spent his early life at Castleview Road opposite Stormont. (although I've also been told he started ot at East Bread Street near Connswater Belfast! )
The Oh Yeah exhibition includes:
Gary’s Black ‘quilted’ Gibson Les Paul guitar
A suit, shirt and shoes, specially commissioned by the tailor Gresham Blake for an Amnesty International event.
A series of gold albums, framed magazine covers, signed photos, tour passes, posters and flyers.
A brass plaque to mark a sold out Hammersmith Odeon show, in 2001
A mounted brick from the Martime Hotel, Belfast, presented by the Belfast Blues Society to Gary.
Why isn't there a Belfast statue or blue plaque to commemorate this man?
Robert William Gary Moore was a Northern Irish musician, most widely recognised as a singer and virtuoso guitarist. Wikipedia
Died: February 6, 2011, Estepona, Spain

Moore shared the stage with such blues and rock musicians as B.B. King, Albert King, Jack Bruce, Albert Collins, George Harrison, and Greg Lake, as well as having a successful solo career. Guitarist magazine interview dates from 1995.
The interview was carried out by the magazine's deputy editor David Mead, who met Moore in a London hotel to discuss the Ulsterman's mentor and friend, Peter Green.
Green, who was a key member of the early incarnation of Fleetwood Mac, was Gary's inspiration, whom he first went to see play when he was only 14.
In the interview, Gary said: The first time I saw Peter Green play was at the Club Rado, which was a very rough club in Belfast.
And at that time he'd just replaced Eric (Clapton) in The Blues Breakers.
In the detailed interview, Gary also talked about different aspects of his life and the guitarists who inspired him.

Of all Gary's guitars the '61 Stratocaster that he is pictured playing above is, along with the '59 Les Paul that Peter Green gave him, probably the guitar most associated with Gary. BCC should make every effort to try to buy it (if it comes up for auction), although it won't be cheap. The '59 Les Paul that Peter Green gave him and Gary subsequently used throughout most of his career is unfortunately now owned by some guy called Kirk Hammett.

Well, my competitive nature is kicking in and I want to share with you both that I have visited Skånevik in Norway where they erected a statue to Gary. Not that it was my reason for going there but just saying, like. They already erected a statue and we have to wait until 2021 in his country of birth before we can commemorate him.

I came across this advance info about a statue fund raising gig at the Empire Music Hall on April 12th 2019

Oh Yeah now seeking new applicants for October 2012 start.
The Return Of Oh Yeah's Music Talent Development Programme
The Oh Yeah music centre is looking for musical talent for the second series of its ambitious programme, Scratch My Progress. Four emerging acts, either bands or solo artists, will be chosen to take part in a nine month course, free of charge.
These acts will be given introductions to music industry veterans, and learn about copyright and music law. They will also be given vocal lessons, PR advice, take part in songwriter workshops and will record a track each. They will benefit from a professional photo shoot while a music writer will deliver a bespoke press release.
This follows on the success of the first Scratch My Progress programme, which finished in June 2012. Four acts - Katharine Philippa, Conor Brown, 20 Second Century and Everyday Superheroes took part.
Katharine Philippa explains how she benefitted from this:
This scheme has been like walking into a house and all the lights coming on. Stuff is illuminated, and you can start to explore with open eyes. It's been such a supportive programme, and has been an aid in the growth of my music. I'd say the Oh Yeah Centre is a base, where people can gather and you can talk stuff over, and I think everybody needs that.
The first phase of Scratch my Progress has previously been supported by Invest Northern Ireland and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Conor Brown, another participant, remembers:
I saw it as an investment in us, and an investment in our future because they were letting us meet new people and giving us access to things like practice rooms and recording studios. One of the most worthwhile things though was the contacts I've made. I've talked to people who have worked with the likes of Snow Patrol and Van Morrison, and for me those contacts won't disappear.
Oh Yeah is offering four places on this new Scratch Programme, which will start in the autumn. For more info and application form contact Charlotte Dryden at charlotte@ohyeahbelfast.com. The deadline for application submission is Friday 5th October.
