Hastings - The Practical Traveller's guide to Hastings in Sussex
Hi and welcome to another Practical Traveller’s guide. Today we are looking around the Old Town of Hastings a year round destination.
We parked up in the Rock a Nore Car Park - plenty of spaces as well as a toilet block.
The focus of our two hour walk including a pause for lunch was to capture the historic architecture of the area, look in the diverse range of shops as well as enjoy an energetic walk up the steps of East Hill.
e. We walked along passing a new block of flats in the style of the Fisherman net huts (more later) making our way past the East Cliff Lift House
East Hill Cliff Railway opened in 1852 is the steepest funicular railway in the UK.. It provides access to Hastings Country Park via the East Hill, which overlooks the Old Town and Rock-a-Nore, an area to the east of Hastings. The line provides views over the Stade, home to the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe.
The first part of our walk up the steep steps is for the energetic! we would recommend to those with buggies/wheelchair users to use the East Hill Railway.
For those walking you will go passed The Dolphin Inn built in 1798. The pub has been a local watering hole for fishermen for generations and still is to this day.
To the side of the pub are the Tamarisk Steps named after the plant which once grew profusely on the edge of the East Cliff.
As you walk up the steep stairs enjoy views over Hastings and admire the coloured houses. When the steps were renewed “foot prints” were made in the concrete. At the top you reach Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve. You can view the beacon put in place to commemorate VE day in 1955.
After a short pause we made our way back down the steps, noticing that the street names reflect the fishing business of the area like “tackle way”.
The Old Town of Hastings is a maze of narrow streets, twittens, walks and passages and we were excited to explore and to photograph what the area has to offer.
We went in August on a rather overcast day but this didn't dampen our enthusiasm to explore. We walked through into the streets of Old Hastings taking in the eclectic nature and theme of the shops.
There are plenty of art, antique and book shops to browse.
We veered off the main streets down passage ways to reveal some very pretty properties as well as those of historical and architectural interest.
The West Hill lift has a lower station in George Street. Whilst we didn't do this on our two hour trip it is worth knowing that the upper station on the West Hill offers far reaching views and access to Smugglers Adventure and Hastings Castle. It was on this hilltop that Hastings resident John Logie Baird, the inventor of television, made his first radar experiments.
There were plenty of places to eat offering a range of food for all tastes from fish and chips, to pub grub to vegetarian. I’ve included a link in the bio to the top places. We choose an Italian Cafe on George Street which is traffic free, called The Green Cafe and tasted the best and largest ever cheese scones with creamy butter whilst sitting outside watching the world go by. George Street has a range of specialist shops as captured by our photos as well as the usual seaside gift shops.
After lunch we cut through market passage passing the Anchor Inn to our left and onto West Street, crossing over High Street onto East Street then reaching the main A259. We crossed over and walked along Rock-a-Nord Road passing the Jerwood Gallery to our right.
The Jerwood Gallery is a museum of contemporary British art located on The Stade in Hastings, East Sussex and is a not for profit organisation. The gallery opened in March 2012 and cost £4m to build
We then came upon the famous unique tall black Net Shops - used by local fisherman since 1835 for the storage of their nets and fishing gear. Further information can be found in the Fishermens Museum which is just next door and free to enter.
Our walk took around two hours including a break for lunch. The Old Hastings Preservation Society does offer free guided walks

What The Crown Gets Wrong About History
Netflix's The Crown will last for six seasons, spanning the entire public life of Queen Elizabeth II. The Crown's crew takes pains to make it as accurate as possible, but there are some things they just make up. Here's what The Crown gets wrong about history.
The Crown deftly and cleverly explores both the professional and personal life of Queen Elizabeth II, and probably the most interesting moments come when those two parts intersect. Queen Elizabeth II took the throne in the early 1950s, the dark ages as far as gender equality in marriage is concerned. It was a commonly held notion that a man was the master of his home, outranking his wife, but what if that man's wife was the queen of England, the sovereign over tens of millions of people, including him, also a royal by birth? The Crown presented this conundrum, and it's a difficult one for Prince Philip to reconcile.
After she puts him in charge of preparations for her 1953 coronation, Philip lets this shred of power go to his head, and he mentions how he doesn't think he should have to bow to the Queen - his wife - when she's officially crowned the ruler of his nation.
Writer Peter Morgan didn't take this episode from historical records, but rather created it to explore the gender politics of the 1950s. According to royal family expert Christopher Wilson, Philip had no problem with taking a knee. Wilson explained:
He came from a royal household which had borrowed so much of its ritual and protocol from the British Royal Family. He knew full well what was expected of him in public, and was prepared to go along with it.

Mid Hants Railway - Open Weekend - 15/09/19
The weekend of the 14th and 15th of September saw the Mid Hants Railway host their annual Open Weekend - which sees members and shareholders of Wadebridge and the Mid Hants Railway Preservation Society (MHRPS) travel for free, as one of the advantages to being a member and shareholder. Extra activities were held on the line between Alresford and Medstead & Four Marks, with society stands and guided tours through the Ropley workshops. In previous years, the Railway have implemented an enhanced timetable, featuring many of the resident locomotives in action - both steam and diesel.
The 2019 event would see a three-train service in operation, with the main attraction for this year being the return to traffic of SR Schools Class 4-4-0 No. 30925 'Cheltenham' - carrying British Railways lined green livery for the first time since withdrawal from British Railways in 1962. The loco would be running alongside recently overhauled SR S15 No. 506 and resident Class 205 'Thumper' No. 1125 - which spent the majority of the day running shuttles between Alresford and Ropley, preceded by a round trip from Alresford to Medstead & Four Marks and return.
This video captures the trio in action on the Sunday (15th September), with beautiful wall-to-wall sunshine blessing us on the day.
Shots included:
- 506: Bishops Sutton, Ropley, Bowers Grove Lane and Alresford
- 1125: Alresford, Bishops Sutton and Ropley
- 30925: Ropley, Bowers Grove Lane, Ropley and Bishops Sutton
A beautiful day of filming, with wall-to-wall sunshine blessing us on the day. Thanks go to the members and shareholders of the MHRPS, and the volunteers of the Mid Hants Railway, who without their hard work, there would be no railway to enjoy. A special mention to Heritage Painting, who did a superb job on repainting 'Cheltenham' back into British Railways lined green. She's certainly a stunner!

James Burke Connections, Ep. 1 The Trigger Effect
The Trigger Effect details the world's present dependence on complex technological networks through a detailed narrative of New York City and the power blackout of 1965. Agricultural technology is traced to its origins in ancient Egypt and the invention of the plough. The segment ends in Kuwait where, because of oil, society leapt from traditional patterns to advanced technology in a period of only about 30 years.
Audacity & Gold Bars - The First Voyage Of The SMS Möve I THE GREAT WAR Special
The German raider SMS Möve and her captain Nikolaus Graf zu Dohna-Schlodien were already legendary during World War 1. Their exploits sound like pirate tales of the Golden Age of Piracy: Ever eluding the Allied fleet, the Möve brought down over 30 ships, captured multiple hundred crewmen and brought home over 100.000 Mark in gold bars when they returned the first time.

The Vikings! - Crash Course World History 224
In which John Green teaches you about Vikings! That's right, one of our most requested subjects, the Vikings, right here on Crash Course. So what's the deal with Vikings? Well, the stuff you've heard about them may not be true. The Vikings weren't just pagan raiders striking terror into the hearts of defenseless European Christendom. They were some of the greatest travelers of their time, and they weren't always traveling to steal. In a lot of cases, they were traveling to trade. John will teach you about Viking trade goods, Norse Mythology, and yes, there will be blood, guts, and dragons. OK?
You can directly support Crash Course at Subscribe for as little as $0 to keep up with everything we're doing. Free is nice, but if you can afford to pay a little every month, it really helps us to continue producing this content.
Sinking of the Lusitania - The Gorlice-Tarnów Offensive I THE GREAT WAR - Week 41

At the same time the German and Austro-Hungarian army start a combined surprise offensive in the Carpathians. The Gorlice-Tarnów Offensive is a huge success for German commander August von Mackensen.

Hindenburg's Cunning Plan - A 2nd Tannenberg I THE GREAT WAR Week 30
After more than six months of war, the first big mutiny breaks out in Singapore. The endless battles in which big powers sacrifice thousands of soldiers are leading to an organised resistance for the first time. Indian troops refuse to board a ship because they don't want to fight other muslims in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Paul von Hindenburg encircles the Russians on the Eastern Front and they almost suffer a defeat as they did in Tannenberg 1914.
