Discover yesteryear when you step into the first Territorial Prison in the western United States. The prison was built by convict labor in the late 1800s. The gray sandstone walls of this immense structure are 24 feet high and buried 4 feet deep to prevent escape by tunneling.
You can visit the enclosed courtyard where the convicts exercised, and walk through their austere cell blocks and feel the chills of maximum-security cells

STORYLINE:
Mexico's Public Security authorities have opened two new penitentiaries in the state of Nayarit, part of the Northwestern Federal Penitentiary Complex.
The new maximum-security prisons will house 2,000 inmates and will help ease the pressure in overcrowded prisons in other states, Public Security Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna said at a news conference to mark the opening on Tuesday.
The federal government has invested over 2,000 (m) million pesos the the construction and operation of this penitentiary, said Garcia Luna.
The new penitentiaries are part of the Federal Penitentiary Strategy, launched by president Felipe Calderon in 2007.
This strategy seeks to create new intelligence systems for prison control, improve infrastructure and technology and the creation of a new national academy to train prison guards.
According to authorities, over 15-thousand inmates have been transferred to federal prisons since December 2006.
The number of federal inmates increased from 3,164 in December 2006 to 18,283 in December 2011.
In addition, eight new penitentiaries are currently under construction, which will house over 20-thousand inmates.

Black Train (Live From the Old Nelson County Jail 1819-1987)
Special thanks to Southern Gentleman and Proprietor of Jailer's Inn C. Paul McCoy for this fun idea!
The Old Nelson County Jail housed prisoners from 1797 till 1987. The front building, sometimes referred to as the Old Jail was constructed in 1819. Records indicated that John Rogers architect of St. Joseph Cathedral, performed certain carpentry on this structure. The upper floor of this native limestone building, with 30 inch thick walls, contained two cells and an upstairs dungeon to house prisoners.
The back stone building, sometimes referred to as the New Jail, was built in 1874 and is completely surrounded by a stone wall. The front jail was then; made into the jailer's residence. Both the jail and jailer's residence were used and occupied until 1987. It was the oldest operating jail complex in the state of Kentucky and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder & Veterans Correctional Housing
Panelists discuss success, challenges and lessons learned from implementing correctional housing units for veterans in jails and prisons, along with the role that Post-Tramatic Stress Disorder plays in crime and rehabilitation. Notably, a significant percentage of combat troops are returning home profoundly affected by both visible and invisible battle scars, including high rates of PTSD, traumatic brain injury and serious physical wounds. The majority of these individuals, an estimated 77 percent, completed their service to their country with honorable discharges, yet their pathways from the military into the justice system typically began with a difficult transition back into civilian life.
