How to find Old Roar Gill
Old Roar Gill takes its name from the waterfall which feeds the Priory Stream. To-day the force is sadly diminished, but in Victorian and indeed 18th Century times, it was a show place. The Hastings Guide, 1794, says: The situation is beautifully romantic; for after heavy rain a large body of water tumbles over with a tremendous force, whis heard half a mile off.

Hastings First Trolleybus 1 April 1928 from Beulah
On 1st April 1928 Hastings, the Sussex seaside resort, was in the forefront of technology with its new trolleybuses replacing the towns worn out tramway. At the time, the fleet of 50 single deck and 8 open-top Guy trolleybuses made it the largest operator of trolleybuses in Britain. Hastings was to remain unique in being the only system in the world to run purpose built open top trolleybuses. One of the open toppers survives to this day and is known locally as Happy Harold. When the trolleybus system closed it had a Commer two stroke diesel engine fitted.
Trolleybuses last operated in Britain in Bradford in 1972. However it was announced in March 2011 that a trolleybus system for Leeds, the city which introduced trolleybuses in Britain back in 1911, has government approval and once a the bureaucratic hurdles have been overcome construction will start in 2014 with an opening planned by 2016. This should the signal to all other large cities and conurbations to follow suit. For more on this visit

Little Roar Ghyll
This video reveals a lost temperate rainforest in the heart of Hastings which had been inaccessible to the public for many years. A team of workers, paid and volunteer, have been clearing a path through the wilderness to re-discover the lost beauty of Little Roar Ghyll, is a waterfall in the upper reaches of Alexandra Park. It is smaller than the better known Old Roar which is also in need of restoration.
The Ghyll has suffered from the effects of the great storm in 1987, and with a housing estate was constructed above the Ghyll, pollution from household drains became a problem. This has now been rectified. The roar from which the waterfall takes its name is not now as great as it was when the area was a beauty spot in Victorian Times because the water which originally flowed into the natural watercourse is now taken away by the town's drainage system.
As you will see from the video, more work needs to be done re-instating this lovely waterfall.
