Rottnest Island Old Tram
The train / tram was originally devised as a means of transporting munitions to the guns on top of Oliver Hill. Set out for a guided exploration of the Rottness Island Fortress to tour bunkers and underground tunnels and gaze into the barrel of a massive 9.2-inch (23.4 cm) Mk X gun. Along the way, listen as your guide shares insight into the island's military history – it served as an internment and work camp for suspected enemies during both World Wars.
Today, that dark chapter of the island's history is decidedly closed, and Rotto is a favourite destination for beach-goers, wildlife lovers and sun-seekers from the mainland.

Discover the journey of the 6 inch barrel originally from the H.M.A.S Melbourne later installed at the Bickley Battery on Rottnest Island. At the end of the WW2 the barrel was cut in half when the guns were decommissioned and it has since been
welded back together for display at the Kingstown Barracks.

Best Places to visit in Australia: ROTTNEST ISLAND 2019
Discover the best attractions and activities Rottnest Island has to offer.
Just 19 km off the coast of Perth City, but an entire world away, lies the sunny holiday island of Rottnest, blessed with a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery, dazzling marine life and some of the world's finest beaches and pristine bays.
Rottnest Island earned its curious name when in 1696, Dutch explorer, Willem de Vlamingh, mistook the island's unusual marsupial population for common rats and named it Rottnest - literally translating to 'rats’ nest'. Today, having a photo taken alongside the 'rats', known as Quokkas, is one of the main attractions for visitors to the island.

Army Museum of Western Australia chooses BKAYDesign to create their new gallery.
The first stage of a major gallery redevelopment for the Army Museum of Western Australia in Fremantle is to be designed and built by BKAYDesign.
The first gallery, to be known as The Post 1945 Gallery, has as one of its core aims to engage the public in understanding and valuing the role and contribution of the Australian Army since the end of World War II, both within Australia and internationally. This gallery will be the first of four specialised galleries, each one featuring a different chapter in Australian military history.
Graham Horne, the Chairman of the Army Museum of WA Foundation said the first priority would be to fit out the post-1945 gallery to include the Armys involvement with many key conflicts and military opperations. These include the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan from 1945, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and conflicts in Malaya, Indonesia, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition the gallery will include information and artefacts from a multitude of peacekeeping missions, the Australian Regular Army, Citizen Military Forces, the Army Reserve and Cadets in Western Australia.
BKAYDesigns Kim Kay said his company was extremely proud to be associated with the design and construction of the Museums new gallery.
It is very satisfying to help create a moving testimony to the role played by the Australian Army from 1945 to the present day, he said.
Our brief from the Army Museum of Western Australia is to engage visitors in a way that has not been possible before. To tell present and future generations of the sacrifices and challenges faced by Western Australian men and women who put their lives on the line in the service of their country. This gallery will have a strong focus on personal stories and experiences.
BKAYDesign has an acknowledged expertise in designing and building exhibitions, largely for the oil and gas industry.
Our core business is the imaginative use of third dimensional space and the opportunity to apply these skills to the creation of a museum of this class from the ground up is a challenge we grabbed with both hands, Mr Kay said.
The Post 1945 Gallery of the museum will open on 22 April 2010 on the first floor of the western end of the Artillery Barracks at 2 Burt Street Fremantle. It is supported by an initial $581,000 grant from Lotterywest and a $2.5 million fundraising appeal has been launched to fund the development of this and the following three stages of the museum.
When finished, it is expected to attract thousands of people.

LEIGHTON BATTERY BUCKLAND HILL MOSMAN PARK PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA PART 2 OF 2
DON PUGH AND PETER BARRETT ------------------------------- THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ARTILLERY HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA (INC.) THE LEIGHTON BATTERY HERITAGE SITE BUCKLAND HILL WORLD WAR ii TUNNELS ENTRANCE :Car Park, BOUNDARY ROAD, MOSMAN PARK OPEN: FIRST SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH HOURS: 10 am 3:30 pm GUIDED TOURS COMMENCE EVERY HALF HOUR RECENT HISTORY Towards the end of 1942 authority had been given to relocate the Fort Arthur Head guns to Leighton where their prime task of Examination Battery could be fulfilled more satisfactorily. The guns were then emplaced on temporary mountings as it was already planned to equip the site with more modem weapons as soon as they became available from the United Kingdom. In the meantime over 300 metres of tunnels were excavated in places up to 10 metres below ground in which magazines for the storage of ammunition, communications, gun crew rest areas and observation posts were constructed. The Battery Commander was a mining engineer who used his knowledge to develop the complex. The battery, which became known as the Leighton 6 inch Battery, was commissioned in February 1943. Barracks for the personnel, two coast defence searchlights and other associated facilities were built to serve the battery. Prior to the 6-inch battery moving to Buckland Hill, a 3.7-inch anti aircraft battery had been deployed near what is today the main entrance to the residential estate. The tenders for the construction of the A/A site were let in August of 1941 and the gun station was then commissioned about two weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. In 1944 work commenced on the replacement battery for the Leighton 6-inch Battery. It comprised three 5.25-inch dual-purpose Coast Artillery/ AntiAircraft guns. This battery was known as 802 Battery and was sufficiently advanced by March 1945 for the 6-inch guns to be removed and transferred to the Princess Royal Battery at Albany.«
