Join our conservation adventures for a new way to experience Mazatlan and the Mexican Pacific Riviera |
Whether it´s watching the amazing humpback whales, swimming with dolphins in the wild, kayaking among mangroves, helping baby sea turtles get to sea for the first time, or discovering ancient petroglyphs while hiking on a natural protected area, our adventures will fill you up with life changing experiences, long lasting memories and the satisfaction of giving back while taking part on genuine research and conservation initiatives throughout this important ecoregion.
WHY EXPLORING WITH ONCA?
Our adventures will take you to the heart of the Mexican Pacific Riviera; an exotic land of tropical lush vegetation, rivers, wetlands, islands, wonderful beaches, esplendorous mountains, and the bluest ocean you´ve ever seen!
Our expeditions combine wildlife research, education and community development with sustainable tourism activities, promoting awareness about the value and threats to biodiversity, and generating direct benefits for the conservation and management of wildlife species and its hábitat.
WHY IS ONCA DIFFERENT?
Apart from being a tourist operator, our organization finances important research and conservation efforts throughout the region like the monitoring of marine megafauna populations (e.g. humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles, sea birds and sharks), marine mammal stranding attention and great whale entanglement rescue, environmental awereness campaigns and education for conservation workshops at local schools and rural communities.
We also work tightly with the people and communities that own access to significant natural areas, helping them build and strength their capacities for the development and implementation of sustainable tourism products from which they can get direct benefits as an alternative to traditional economic activities (e.g. artisanal fisheries, agriculture, acuaculture, logging, etc.), improving their livelihoods and protecting their resources while inspiring a genuine sense of ownership for their natural heritage.

Orca (Orcinus orca) preys on mobula rays in Mazatlan, Mexico | SE Gulf of California | 03.03.17
A pod of about 13 Orca (Orcinus orca), all females, juveniles and calves, where sighted this morning off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico in the Southeast Gulf of California, preying on a huge school of mobile rays (Mobula sp.). This is the first time we observed orca preying on rays in the area and just the 6th ocassion, in 11 years of survey, that the species has been recorded in Mazatlan waters. Most definitely one of the most exciting sightings ever!

Underwater encounters with wild dolphins in Mazatlan, Mexico | Onca Explorations | #ExploreforLife!
The coastal waters off Mazatlán are a truly cetacean paradise. Over 18 species of cetaceans have been recorded by the crew at Onca Explorations over the last 10 years and most of them are dolphins. Our citizen science expeditions are designed to perform the monitoring of cetacean species by the systematic collection of data and Photoidentification records. We aim to better understand the ecology of species at least 3 species that are present year-round: bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus); spotted dolphins (Stella attenuata), Spinner dolphins (Stella longirostris). Apart from collecting sighting information on these species, we enter the water to record focal follows of the pods, being able to better describe their fundamental social units and the degree of response to our presence in the water.
The following clip shows a few seconds of what it was probably the best underwater encounter we have had with bottlenose dolphins many years in these waters. Over a hundred dolphins were scattered in subgroups across a 5 mile radius between 15 and 22 miles from the shore. They seemed to stationed in the area as we found them everyday moving though the area during a week long survey.
Everyday in the blue is different and the waters off Mazatlan are for sure a dolphin heaven!

Dolphin meets dron in Mazatlan waters with Onca Explorations
On saturday October 21st, 2017 we had an awesome experiece while testing a new underwater dron by Aqua Exploración, a Mazatlan based engineering and design company by our friend Luis Gamez. This bottlenose dolphin was certainly curious about this new toy and took a good look at it!. This dron can be a great tool for assesing behavior on wild cetaceans and other marine monitoring tasks. Many thanks to our friend Jim Cornelson for the cool video! And of course thanks to Luis and Aqua Exploración for letting us take part of this first trial at sea and sharing this awesome piece of technology with us! We definetely will get one ????! Check Aqua Exploración on facebook for more info on this dron!
