Places to see in ( Fuerteventura - Spain )
Fuerteventura, the second largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, sits in the Atlantic Ocean 100km off the north coast of Africa.
Fuerteventura literally meaning strong fortune but translated by some as Strong Winds or a corruption of the French term for Great Adventure) is one of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa, politically part of Spain. At 1,660 square kilometres (641 square miles), Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife. Fuerteventura was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009. Fuerteventura capital is Puerto del Rosario.
The elongated island of Fuerteventura has an area of 1,660 km2 (641 sq mi). The island is 100 kilometres (62 miles) long and 31 kilometres (19 miles) wide. It is part of the province of Las Palmas. It is divided into six municipalities:
Antigua
Betancuria
La Oliva
Pájara
Puerto del Rosario
Tuineje
100 individual settlements are distributed through these municipalities. A nearby islet, Islote de Lobos, is part of the municipality of La Oliva. Located just 100 km (62 mi) off the coast of north Africa, it is the second biggest of the islands, after Tenerife
The economy of Fuerteventura is mainly based on tourism. Primary tourist areas are located around the existing towns of Corralejo in the north and Morro Jable in Jandia, plus the purely tourist development of Caleta de Fuste, south of Puerto del Rosario. Other main industries are fishing and agriculture (cereals and vegetables). The famous Majorero cheese is locally made from the milk of the indigenous majorera goat. In 2009, Fuerteventura recorded the highest EU regional unemployment rate at a NUTS3 level, at 29.2 percent.
The first tourist hotel was built in 1965 followed by the construction of Fuerteventura Airport at El Matorral, heralding the dawn of a new era for the island. Fuerteventura, with its 3,000 sunshine hours a year, was placed firmly on the world stage as a major European holiday destination. The summer Trade Winds and winter swells of the Atlantic make this a year-round surfers' paradise, with more exposed areas on the north and west shores such as Corralejo and El Cotillo proving most popular. Wind surfing takes places at locations around the island. Sailors. With many hills present throughout the Island, hikers are also attracted to this Island. Excellent sandy beaches are found in many locations. Western beaches, such as those around El Cotillo, can experience strong surf. The beaches adjoining the extensive sand dunes east of Corralejo are popular, as are the more protected extensive sandy shores of the Playa de Sotavento de Jandia on the southeastern coast between Costa Calma and the Morro Jable. Naked sun bathing and swimming are the norm almost on all beaches.
Sites of interest include Corralejo and El Jable to the north which are made up of fine sand dunes whilst the south is filled with long beaches and remote bays. The constant winds blowing onto the beaches provide a paradise for windsurfing. Surfing is common on the west and north coasts where there are large waves. Windsurfing is common around Corralejo and Playas de Sotavento and wave sailing (windsurfing on the waves) on the coast along the northern half of the island. El Cotillo is a small fishing village in the north-west of the Island famous for a very long beach to the south of the village and few very calm beaches to the north. The northern beaches frequented by snorkeling enthusiasts and sun worshippers alike are referred to as lakes by the locals.
At Cofete on the western side of Jandía a remote and imposing house - Villa Winter - looks out to sea across wide and generally empty beaches. It was reputedly built by a Mr Winter on land given by Generalisimo Franco. Despite being one of the most beautiful parts of Fuerteventura Cofete has very little touristic facilities.
For a time, the beaches were home to a popular accidental attraction. On 18 January 1994 the once-beautiful and proud United States Lines ocean liner SS American Star (former America, USS West Point, Australis) was beached in Playa de Garcey during a severe storm. Within a year, she broke in two and later lost her stern.

Learn Spanish and Surfing on Fuerteventura, Spain: The School
More info (NL):

Surfing in Spain is good, especially at Fuerteventura, an island which is part of the Canaries and it's an amazing spot to learn Spanish. It's the ideal location to combine these two elements.
CANARY ISLAND - SURF FUERTEVENTURA - LOS LOBOS- surfing
WONDERFULL WAVES IN LOS LOBOS, FUERTEVENTURA, CANARY ISLANDS!
Get the ferry from the harbour at Corralejo. It leaves at 10am and returns at 4pm. From the port on Lobos it is a long walk over to the point. Paddle out off the rocks.
Take loads of food and water and sun screen and booties.
The spot has several sections which link up easily.
There is an easy take followed by a nice open wall for 100m or more, then a long fast tube section. This part of the wave is the most dangerous as it is very shallow and close to the cliff. After the tube section is another open wall followed by another tube section which may close out. If you get this far it is about 500m.
The island of Los Lobos is unihabited and the wave breaks along the base of an old volcanoe. Because of the remoteness of the spot it is best left for experienced surfers. A bad wipeout could be nasty if you get dragged across the bottom and help is a long way away.
Places to see in ( Canary Islands - Spain ) Corralejo Dunes
Places to see in ( Canary Islands - Spain ) Corralejo Dunes
The Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo is one of the most-visited natural areas in Fuerteventura and boasts the largest sand dunes of the Canary Islands. With miles of near-white sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, huge dunes and a contrasting red and black volcanic landscape, it is real natural gem of the Canary Islands.
The Natural Park covers around 24km², including the beaches, the large shifting sand dunes and the volcanic landscape to the south. Known locally as Grandes Playas (big beaches), the 10Km stretch of coastline is actually made up of a number of smaller beaches. These pale sandy beaches have few rocks and clear turquoise waters. Contrary to many guides and newspaper articles, the sand here has not “blown over from the Sahara”, but is in fact composed of the shells of marine creatures.
Although this area may seem rather barren, there are a number of species present. The Houbara Bustard is the flag-bearer of the Natural Park and is the largest native bird in the Canary Islands. You may also see little egrets, spoonbills, kentish plovers, lizards as well as beetles and other invertebrates. Very few plants can survive such harsh conditions, two exceptions, having adapted to the shifting sand dunes are Androcymbium gramineum psammophilum and the Sea Grape (Tetraena fontanesii). Importantly, the park, along with the nearby island of Lobos are designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA – Zona de especial protección para las aves).
The area was designated as a Natural Park in 1982 together with the small island of Los Lobos, located just off the coast of Corralejo. Unfortunately two large hotels were built before the area was declared a protected space. These Hotels are rather a blot on such a stunning landscape, however on the plus side, if you stay in either of the hotels, the dunes and turquoise waters really are on your doorstep.
The Grandes Playas are great for water sports. An area known as Flag Beach is a favourite with surfers in the area. The El Medano area is often visited by wind and kite surfers. With 10Km of coastline, there is plenty of space on the beaches for everyone, including those wanting to catch some rays. However, as great as the area is for water sports, it is not that great for swimming, as there are strong currents and rip tides along with a small ratio of lifeguards to beach-goers.
For those wanting a more tranquil day at the beach, head for the zuccos. These semi-circular stone shelters provide some respite from the wind and offer a little privacy too – they are often occupied by nudists, especially towards the southern end of the dunes. Dotted along the beaches are a number of Chiringuitos (beach bars) along with toilet and shower facilities. Though a few areas offer sun-loungers and umbrellas for hire, there is very little cover in the Natural Park, so ensure that you bring plenty of sun cream and water with you.
