Applying to the JET Programme Tips and Advice♪Teach English in Japan♡
Please subscribe to our channel♪
Hello everyone! ♡
My name is Lian, I'm from Ireland and I live in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan with my husband and our 1 year old son, Seán!
On our channel, Fuji Family, we make vlogs and videos about our life and travels in Japan.
We also make videos about raising a bilingual baby!
Our son Seán is 18 months old and is learning both English and Japanese.
I initially came to Japan on the JET Programme
(Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme) as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT).
CIR: Coordinator of International Relations.
Most ALTs and CIRs applicants must be fluent in English.
There are also positions for French, German, Korean speakers now!
With JET Application season for the 2020 intake in full swing, I thought I'd like to make a video about the reasons I came to Japan and my experiences on the JET Programme.
If you are thinking of applying, check out this video for some advice and tips♡
I became interested in Japan from a young age, when I was given a certain book from my Mum which I fell in love with!
I was so glad to be accepted into JET, to get to teach students from kindergarten up to adults, to travel in Japan (see our other videos of Kyoto, Tokyo Disneyland and Yokohama!) and to make friends from all over the world.
(This video contains my own thoughts and opinions about the JET Programme and is in no way affiliated with the Programme)
I came to Japan in 2011 and participated in the JET Program for two years.
I was placed in Shizuoka Prefecture, which was one of my preferences on the application.
I worked in an Academic High School as an ALT. I worked with JTEs who each had their own teaching style.
It was a wonderful experience and I made lifelong friendships (and met my husband!) while on JET.
For those of you interested in applying, or in the process of applying now, I will give you some of my tips that I think helped me in my application!
Including:
Letters of Reference
Indicating your Placement Preferences
Your Statement of Purpose
☆I will give my 5 tips for writing your Statement of Purpose (SOP)☆
The application process is quite time consuming, so I would deifinitely recommend getting started now!
The application deadlines are:
November 15th 2019 for US applicants.
December 13th 2019 for Irish applicants.
(Please check with your Embassy or the JET programme website for the deadline in your country)
I also talk about life as an ALT. The job of an Assistant Language Teacher varies widely across schools, so it will definitely be of benefit to have an open mind.
Life in Japan is full of challenges and you will learn something new every day!
In future videos I will talk about life in Japan and how I met my Japanese husband!
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in a comment ♡
Thank you for watching!
If you liked this video, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe! ♪
We will continue to bring you videos of our life in Japan♡
We hope you can get tips and inspiration about traveling with children, raising a bilingual baby or living in Japan!
Our videos always have both English and Japanese subtitles, so they are perfect if you are studying either English or Japanese ♪
Thank you so much♪
See you next time!

Akainko - the Father of the Sanshin.
Every year, on March 4th of the lunar calendar, there is a festival in honor of the Father of the Sanshin, who is known by the name Akainko (child of the red dog). March fourth was chosen to be the date of recognition because of the word sanshin, with san meaning 'three' (third month) and 'shi' meaning 'four' (the fourth day).

Kabuki Theatre
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008
URL:
Description: Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theatre form, which originated in the Edo period at the beginning of the seventeenth century and was particularly popular among townspeople. Originally, both men and women acted in Kabuki plays, but eventually only male actors performed the plays: a tradition that has remained to the present day. Male actors specialized in womens roles are called onnagata. Two other major role types are aragoto (rough style) and wagoto (soft style).
Kabuki plays are about historical events and moral conflict in relationships of the heart. The actors speak in a monotone voice and are accompanied by traditional instruments. The Kabuki stage is equipped with several gadgets, such as revolving stages and trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another speciality of the Kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that extends into the audience. Important characteristics of Kabuki theatre include its particular music, costumes, stage devices and props as well as specific plays, language and acting styles, such as the mie, in which the actor holds a characteristic pose to establish his character. Keshÿ, the particular make-up, provides an element of style easily recognizable even by those unfamiliar with the art form.
After 1868, when Japan opened to Western influence, actors strove to heighten the reputation of Kabuki among the upper classes and to adapt the traditional styles to modern tastes. Today, Kabuki is the most popular of the traditional styles of Japanese drama.
