Open Garden Squares 2016
Every year for 1 weekend in mid June, over 200 usually private garden squares open their gates to the public across 25 London boroughs. This year we visited Kensington Garden Square, Cleveland Square, Cleveland Gardens, Park Crescent, Park Square, Kensington Square, Rosmead Gardens and Ladbroke Square.
Open Garden Squares Weekend: June 9th - 10th 2018
Enjoy access to gardens that are opened to the public once a year. Gardens created and maintained by local residents in a variety of spaces: all shapes and sizes.
What hits you is the creativity and dedication that goes into maintaining these spaces.
The weekend may be over, but the money you spent on your ticket protects London's green spaces throughout the year. The London Parks and Gardens Trust, which organises Open Garden Squares Weekend, champions parks, gardens and all open spaces in the face of development pressure. We also share some funds directly with the gardens that take part, so that they can continue their work.

Suzanne Etherton has lived with her husband and two children in a three-bedroom apartment on Grade II listed Cleveland Square in Bayswater, west London, for 23 years. The one-and-a-half acre garden square dates from 1865 and includes lawns, mature trees and a profusion of peonies, alliums and foxgloves, thanks to Etherton’s role as garden manager. “I grew up on a garden square and really wanted our children to have the same experience. Shared gardens are great for family life,” says Etherton, 54...

London’s green spaces are really something special. If you happen to find yourself helicoptering over London, you’ll see just how much of the city exists under trees and between urban wildernesses. We owe a great deal to the people who look after our parks and public gardens. Even the ones locked behind wrought iron gates give us much needed health benefits. Every year we get the chance to see the hidden gardens and the people working overtime to maintain them. The Open Garden Squares Weekend ha...

The Secret Gardens of the Open Garden Festival
Gardeners are exterior designers and the special reward that their work lives, grows and offers another look, every season. This week we head over to see just such an Eden in Franschhoek and a competitor in this year’s Open Garden Festival.
This week, we feature one of the best gardens the Cape has to offer. This English country garden, with formal edging, flowing lawns and personal wine and olive farm, is something owners Clive and Joanna Venning are very proud of.
Joanna’s enthusiasm was born of growing up in England where her mother is a very keen gardener and her father a farmer. For his part, Clive has owned several golf courses and is a master at lawns. Together, they boast all the skills required. The entrance to their home suggests a couple who loves to be in touch with Nature and there’s almost as much plant life inside as out.
The lawns are a golfer’s dream, with the pool and terrace is awash in the healthiest looking iceberg roses. Cyprus trees lend structure and height, and while everything is laid out in scale and proportion, it never feels overly formal. The couple have also used soft, loose English plantings where possible and have avoided hard colours, going for a palette of blues, whites, pinks, purples and apricots.
This is one garden that definitely proves what you put in is what you get out.
Step in to this Cape Eden on Top Billing this Thursday at 7:30pm on SABC3.
