15th May 1940: The world's first McDonald’s restaurant opened in California
The McDonald brothers had successfully run the ‘Airdrome’ hotdog stand in Arcadia, California, for three years before they began their first McDonald's Bar-B-Que restaurant in San Bernardino. The restaurant had twenty-five items on the menu, and was typical of restaurants of its time where customers arrived by car and were served by waiting staff known as car hops.
In 1948 the brothers streamlined their entire restaurant experience when they temporarily closed the restaurant for remodelling. It reopened in October 1948 with a new design where customers ordered food directly at the counter. The brothers also reduced the number of items on the menu and introduced their Speedee Service System that adopted an assembly line approach to simplify food preparation.
Many of these design innovations had first been introduced by the White Castle hamburger chain in the 1920s, but the success of the McDonald brothers’ restaurant saw them seek opportunities to expand their business. In 1953 they began to offer franchise opportunities, firstly of the serving system and then of the entire brand including the name and the architectural design.
The aggressive expansion of the McDonald’s brand was overseen by Ray Kroc, originally a provider of milkshake machines, who persuaded the McDonald brothers to franchise the restaurants throughout the country. The brothers agreed, and received 0.5% of gross sales in franchised restaurants. Kroc completely bought the brothers out in 1961. He paid them $2.7 million for the business, and went on to create the global chain we know today.

The First McDonald's in the World
McDonald's education began when, in 1940, Maurice and Richard (Mac and Dick) MacDonalds restaurant relocated their father from Monrovia to San Bernardino, California. At the new location the restaurant was renamed The famous barbecue MacDonalds. The restaurant had about 40 different kinds of dishes cooked on the barbecue. After some time, the brothers noticed that almost all of their income they receive from the sale of hamburgers. After that, they simplified the menu, focusing on the sale of that later formed the basis of fast food: burgers, fries, milkshakes, sweet drinks and apple pie.

A Walk Around the Original McDonalds Burger Stand, Downey, Los Angeles
The oldest operating McDonald's restaurant is a drive-up hamburger stand at 10207 Lakewood Boulevard at Florence Avenue in Downey, California. It was the third McDonald's restaurant and opened on August 18, 1953. It was the second restaurant franchised by Richard and Maurice McDonald, prior to the involvement of Ray Kroc in the company, and it still has the two original 30-foot Golden Arches and a 60-foot (18 m) animated neon Speedee sign that was added in 1959. The restaurant is now the oldest in the chain still in existence and is one of Downey's main tourist attractions ever. Along with its sign, it was deemed eligible for addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, although it was not added because the owner objected.
Vlog First Thoughts on San Bernardino, California; Yes, it's bad to the bone
They need robot security in the hospital parking lot. A tall fence protects the library. People ask me for smokes and money. People talk about not having any food to put on the table. I almost helped a black guy push his car because the engine died. But he started it up again after a few tries. Half the businesses are hard to read because I don't speak Mexican.
This city is naturally beautiful, but the culture is broken and out of touch. Or am I being too harsh? Because there was a drought, and maybe I'm walking into this lush beautiful place after the drought ended?

McDonald's is an American fast food company, founded in 1940 as a restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice McDonald, in San Bernardino, California, United States. They rechristened their business as a hamburger stand. The first time a McDonald's franchise used the Golden Arches logo was in 1953 at a location in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1955, Ray Kroc, a businessman, joined the company as a franchise agent and proceeded to purchase the chain from the McDonald brothers. McDonald's had its original headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, but moved its global headquarters to Chicago in early 2018.[4][5][6]
McDonald's is the world's largest restaurant chain by revenue[7], serving over 69 million customers daily in over 100 countries[8] across approximately 36,900 outlets as of 2016.[9] Although McDonald's is known for its hamburgers, they also sell cheeseburgers, chicken products, french fries, breakfast items, soft drinks, milkshakes, wraps, and desserts. In response to changing consumer tastes and a negative backlash because of the unhealthiness of their food,[10] the company has added to its menu salads, fish, smoothies, and fruit. The McDonald's Corporation revenues come from the rent, royalties, and fees paid by the franchisees, as well as sales in company-operated restaurants. According to a BBC report published in 2012, McDonald's is the world's second-largest private employer (behind Walmart) with 1.9 million employees, 1.5 million of whom work for franchises.
The siblings Richard and Maurice McDonald opened in 1940 the first McDonald's at 1398 North E Street at West 14th Street in San Bernardino, California (at 34.1255°N 117.2946°W) but it was not the McDonald's recognizable today; Ray Kroc made changes to the brothers' business to modernize it. The brothers introduced the Speedee Service System in 1948, putting into expanded use the principles of the modern fast-food restaurant that their predecessor White Castle had put into practice more than two decades earlier.[citation needed]. The original mascot of McDonald's was a chef hat on top of a hamburger who was referred to as Speedee. In 1962 the Golden Arches replaced Speedee as the universal mascot. The symbol, Ronald McDonald, was introduced in 1965. The clown, Ronald McDonald, appeared in advertising to target their audience of children.[11]
Ray Kroc joined the chain in 1954 and built it into an eventually global franchise, making it the most successful fast food corporation in the world
On May 4, 1961, McDonald's first filed for a U.S. trademark on the name McDonald's with the description Drive-In Restaurant Services, which continues to be renewed. By September 13, McDonald's, under the guidance of Ray Kroc, filed for a trademark on a new logo—an overlapping, double-arched M symbol. But before the double arches, McDonald's used the a single arch for the architecture of their buildings. Although the Golden Arches logo appeared in various forms, the present version was not used until November 18, 1968, when the company was favored a U.S. trademark.
The present corporation credits its founding to franchised businessman Ray Kroc in on April 15, 1955. This was in fact the ninth opened McDonald's restaurant overall, although this location was destroyed and rebuilt in 1984. Kroc later purchased the McDonald brothers' equity in the company and begun the company's worldwide reach. Kroc was recorded as being an aggressive business partner, driving the McDonald brothers out of the industry.
Kroc and the McDonald brothers fought for control of the business, as documented in Kroc's autobiography. The San Bernardino restaurant was eventually torn down (1971, according to Juan Pollo) and the site was sold to the Juan Pollo chain in 1976. This area now serves as headquarters for the Juan Pollo chain, and a McDonald's and Route 66 museum.[12] With the expansion of McDonald's into many international markets, the company has become a symbol of globalization and the spread of the American way of life. Its prominence has also made it a frequent topic of public debates about obesity, corporate ethics, and consumer responsibility.

Speedee at the Henry Ford
Introduced in 1948 by Maurice and Richard McDonald in San Bernardino, California, their self-service concept revolutionized the restaurant industry and created modern fast food. The 15 cent hamburger spread across the United States, and McDonald's quick and efficient service was represented by Speedee in colorful animated neon on hundreds of McDonald's trapezoid-single parabolic arch signs throughout the land. The sign seen here was restored and remains on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. For more about McDonald's and other roadside treats visit highwayhost.org

Norton Air Force Base Museum (City of San Bernardino)
(San Bernardino)To preserve, honor and promote the history of the Norton Air Force Base
That’s the mission of The Norton Air Force Base Museum located on the edge of what is now the site of the San Bernardino International Airport.
The Norton Air Force Base Museum occupies a small corner of what used to be a huge operation here in San Bernardino.
Norton Air Base began its life in 1942 ferrying parts to the war effort in World War II. Its name comes from a hero of that conflict, Leyland Norton, who was a pilot and a San Bernardino native.
Located within the former remodeled and renovated NCO Club Building, the Norton AFB Museum has grown into wonderful historical attraction. The 63rd / 445th Norton Veterans Group Memorial is located just outside the Museum honoring those who still serve, or have served, our military.
Additionally, an actual piece of the infamous Berlin wall is on display.. There is also a small gift shop.
The Museum is free, is handicapped accessible, and welcomes guests of all ages. Open 10 AM to 2:00PM every Thursday and Saturday.
