Original T-Bag Designs: Where there is tea there is laughter
Hout Bay's best kept secret...the dancing ladies at Original T-Bag Designs.
“Look at the old teabag in your hands, some are round, some have strings attached, others are a bit wrinkly and some look as though they are no longer of any use whatsoever! Each bag has a story, where it began and how it got to this point. Likewise every person in the room has a unique journey and like the teabag in your hand there is still potential, worth and use.” Jill Heyes (Founder and Director)
Original T-Bag Designs provides employment, security, business and entrepreneurship skills for more than 19 staff from the Imizamo Yethu township. There's a lot of fun, laughter, love and dancing too!

Designer G. Dube goes global by upcycling tea bags into handbags
From Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, Cape Town to the fashion capitol of the world - Paris. And its all due to the humble tea bag. Upcycling tea bags into handbags has put Gracious Dube on a sterling career path.
Dube is one of the 16 people that works at a social responsibility project to help poor township women in on the Cape Peninsula.
Her products were spotted by a French designer and before long became a sought after item in Europe...

Unequal Scenes: Imizamo Yethu/Hout Bay
Hout Bay is a picturesque valley about 15km south of Cape Town, situated between several mountains. There is a protected harbor at one end of the valley, which is one of the busiest fishing harbors in the Western Cape, along with several wealthy housing estates, hotels, and small farms.
Nestled between two of these affluent housing estates is the suburb of Imizamo Yethu. Imizamo Yethu (IY) is comprised of both a designated housing area and an “informal settlement” area, which is largely comprised of small shack dwellings which stretch up the steep slopes of the mountain behind it.
The shacks in this informal settlement reach right to the very edge of the demarcated area, in a densely packed jumble of tin roofs. In fact, even though the total area of IY is much smaller than the whole Hout Bay valley, the two have roughly the same population, 15538 vs. 17329. (City of Cape Town Census 2011)
Although there are services that exist in IY, including schools and a police station, statistics for service delivery are hard to find. However, the striking visual dissimilarities between the richer estate to the north, Tierboskloof, and IY are immediately apparent when viewed from the air. The line of trees which divides the two hides what I can only assume is a heavily fortified fence. In some cases, the houses (some with swimming pools) are just a stone’s throw from the shacks.
The most striking thing to me is the number of trees in Tierboskloof, versus the almost treeless IY. On the day I flew overhead, it was scorchingly hot, almost reaching 30 degrees. I imagined that the temperatures underneath the tin roofs must have been stifling.
Recycled teabags giving hope to impoverished community
Recycled teabags have given a group of men and women from the impoverished Imizamo Yethu Informal Settlement near Hout Bay a new lease on life. Collected by people all over the world, the recycled teabags are used to produce a range of high quality innovative handmade products. Original Teabag designs is now a registered company.

'If I had to choose a son' ...Denzil is a young South African dreaming big.
Mavis, a senior artist at Original T-Bag Designs, bids farewell to Denzil Smith who has just been awarded a scholarship to attend Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking.
This is an incredible moment. Mavis has never had the courage to speak in front of the group before. But this is Denzil's gift to us - he radiates joy and a humble spirit and it has affected each and everyone of us at Original T-Bag Designs in a very positive way. We will miss you Denzil, but we are so excited for your future!

McLaren
The name McLaren is synonymous with motor racing excellence and stands today as a symbol for automotive superiority. Yet what is less known is that the brand was the creation of one young man from New Zealand -- a pioneer who followed his dream and who against all odds led a team to greatness and himself to become a motorsport champion and hero. Despite the tragic end to his life, Bruce’s legacy lives on and his vision, passion and drive to innovate continues to be at the heart of advanced motor engineering to this day. A truly inspirational story of a young boy from humble birth who dared to take on the elite world of motor racing and win. - ( Original Title - McLaren )
