Explore the Ring of Brodgar, the Stones of Stennes, Maeshowe Chambered Tomb, the archaeological dig at the Ness of Brodgar, The Tomb of the Eagles, Skara Brae, Wideford Hill and Cuween Hill chambered tombs, Unstan Tomb, various museums, Kirkwall town and cathedral and numerous standing stones and sites not on the itinerary. We will also take island visits to Papa Westray (on the world's shortest flight) to see the Knap of Howar, a ferry to Hoy to see the Dwarfie Stane and numerous megalithic constructions on Rousay Island! All in one week!

Excavation at Tresness Stalled Cairn, Sanday, Orkney
Professor Vicki Cummings University of Central Lancashire talks about the archaeology excavation of the early Neolithic Stalled Cairn at Tresness on the island of Sanday, Orkney. In order to prevent the loss of valuable archaeological evidence the chamber of this tomb is being excavated as a collaboration between Prof Vicki Cummings (University of Central Lancashire), Profs Jane Downes and Colin Richards (Archaeological Institute, University of the Highlands and Islands) and Dr Hugo Anderson-Whymark (National Museums Scotland).

Kate explores the best of a diverse range of sites around the almost pristine archaeological environments of Orkney and Shetland. Shetland alone has over 5000 registered archaeological sites. Kate discusses the exciting new discoveries in Orkney which will potentially turn our known approach to the Prehistoric archaeology of Britain on its head. When the finger points at the moon, the fool looks at the finger. Is there evidence to suggest that a priesthood of archeoastronomers were masterminding projects on a vast scale? Just how far did their influence spread? Kate touches on sites such as Staneydale Temple, Maeshowe, Skara Brae, The Stones of Stenness, The Ring of Brodgar and more.
Kate Masters is an artist with a life-long obsession with sacred sites, and she has worked on these themes in her art for many years. This led her in 2007 to renovate a sixteenth century barn in the Mayenne in France, which has prompted a particular interest in this unexplored region. In 2008 she gave a talk about the megaliths of that area, but since moving to Edinburgh, Kate has been exploring northern Scotland and the outer islands that hold some of the most impressive megalithic sites on the planet. Her ancestors hail from the Glastonbury area, and she has co-led tour groups along the ridgeway with her father. Kate also coordinated the Megalithic Art Gallery at Megalithomania for several years.

In today's vlog, we visit SKARA BRAE and the RING OF BRODGAR in Kirkwall, Orkney Islands in Scotland and there were SO MANY COWS!! Skara Brae is an old village dating back to 3200 BC, MUCH OLDER than the pyramids in Egypt. It is one of earliest prehistoric sites in Scotland. Ring of Brodgar is a stone circle in the West Mainland part of Stenness. It is the third largest stone circle in the British Isles! The Orkney Islands is such a cute little island and the their accent is SO DIFFERENT from the regular Scottish accent. We also explored the Cathedral right across from the Orkney Museum which was BEAUTIFUL! The Orkney Museum was super cool too because they had a whole bunch of history in it including the VIKINGS! After we explored Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, Scotland, we went back on the shuttle bus to go back to the ship. Then we ate dinner and watched the show, which was AMAZING! I got a few clips of it at the end just in case someone would come up to me and I would get in trouble haha. Hope you guys enjoyed! Orkney Islands Wireless Museum and Classic car show Kirkwall
While on a round Great Britain Cruise in Sept 2012 on Thomson's Spirit I stumbled across this little gem of a wireless museum in Kirkwall on the Orkney Isles. I only had a very short time to grab these snaps and there is so much more to look at I hope I can get back someday. If you are on the Island I am sure that enthusiasts of old radios will enjoy this as much as I did. After a lifetime in the radio and TV business from the 1960 this exhibition brought back fond memories and even the smell of gently toasting mains droppers and thermal valves took me back 50 years. As an added bonus :- there was also a classic car event going on close by so just had enough time to grab a few snaps before rushing back to the ship as the pulled the gang plank up! Enjoy!

Ness of Brodgar Archaeological Dig: Neolithic Discoveries in Orkney 3,300 BC
Explore Orkney and surrounding Islands with Megalithomania in August 2020 - Megalithomania's Hugh Newman is currently exploring Orkney with American researcher Jj Ainsworth. On 5th July, the Ness of Brodgar excavation got underway, and we met up with lead archaeologist Nick Card and got a guided tour around the site from a local tour guide. Trench 'T' has some important new discoveries, such as huge recumbent monoliths, and a carved stone sphere was also unearthed a couple of years ago. This exclusive video includes an interview with Nick and a thorough look at the site, that sits between The Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness stone circles. No doubt more discoveries will be made.
