Arrival of the body of the late Fr. Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB
January 11, 2013 8:30PM - Arrival of the body of the late Fr. Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB at The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat (San Beda College) Mendiola, Manila
Father Anscar J. Chupungco, the former rector of San Beda College, passed away Wednesday morning due to heart attack.
Eternal rest grant unto Fr. Anscar, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace, an entry on San Beda College's Facebook page stated.
Chupungco died around 5 a.m. in Malaybalay, Bukidnon. His remains are expected to be brought to San Beda College in Manila within the week.
According to the said Facebook page, Chupungco was the only person to become rector of three San Beda schools - Mendiola, Rizal, and Alabang. He was rector-president from 2001 to 2007.
Before his death, he was busy with liturgical formation at Paul VI Institute of Liturgy in Bukidnon and speaking engagements all over the world, San Beda added.
Chupungco was a Benedictine monk, a liturgist, theologian and a father to all Filipino liturgists and countless students of San't Anselmo, Paul VI Institute of Liturgy, Graduate School of Liturgy and San Beda College Manila, Rizal, and Alabang, said the Facebook page.
He was born Jose Herminio Javier Chupungco on Nov. 10, 1939 in Cainta, Rizal to Estanislao Sto. Chupungco and Dominga Javier.
San Beda College also gave this information on Fr. Chupungco on the school's Facebook page:
He became a monk of the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat at the age of 19, and was ordained priest in 1965. He earned his licentiate in philosophy and theology (both magna cum laude) from the University of Sto. Tomas and his doctorate in Sacred Theology specializing in Liturgy from the Ateneo d' San't Anselmo in Rome, learning from the experts who served as periti during the Vatican II Council.
He taught several courses in the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome before being chosen as the president of the Institute and Rector Magnificus of the Ateneo d' San't Anselmo.
He also established the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy in the Philippines with then-Bukidnon Bishop and former Manila Archbishop, Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. He is also one of the co-founders of the Maryhill School of Theology, together with four priests from the Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae (CICM).
As a leading expert in liturgy, his expertise is sought in all parts of the world. He also produced the Handbook for Liturgical Studies, which is the standard set of textbooks for liturgical education in the world.
After his term in Rome, Chupungco returned to the Philippines and became secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Liturgy of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.
The University of Sto Tomas honored Father Anscar with the Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award in the year 2000.
In 2010, he was conferred the Serviam Award by Manila archbishop Gaudencio Rosales. In 2011, Fr Anscar was awarded the prestigious McManus Award by the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions of the United States of America.

A Short History of the Benedictines in the Philippines
A Short History of the Benedictine Monks in the Philippines
In the year 1895 on the 12th of September, thirteen Spanish Benedictine monks, headed by Abbot Jose Deas y Villar from the Abbey of Montserrat in Spain, arrived in the Philippines.
On their arrival, they stayed for a while with the Jesuit community in Sta. Ana, Manila.
The original plan was to do mission work in the province of Surigao in northern Mindanao, south of the Philippines. The monks worked on the missions in Surigao that were turned over to them by the Jesuits.
Due to outbreak of the 1896 Revolution, they were left with no choice but to go to Manila. The monks turned over the missions to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1909.
The monks eventually acquired a house on Balmes St., Tanduay, in the district of Quiapo, Manila, on April 25, 1896.
Fr. Juan Sabater, OSB, then superior of the Benedictines, thought of counteracting the influence of the public schools established by the American government and the American Protestant missionaries.
The idea of establishing an educational institution which offers elementary and high school classes and a boarding school for boys was formulated. Coupled with this was the need of sustaining the monastic community with suitable apostolate for its members.
The Benedictine monks had a schoolhouse ready at the corner of Arlegui and Tanduay streets for the opening of classes on June 17, 1901.
The school opened with 212 students taking primaria enseñanza, the equivalent respectively of grade school and high school with the first two years of college.
Colegio de San Beda, was inaugurated with Fr. Silvestre Jofre, OSB as first Rector.
The monks realized later on that in order for the school to grow, they had to look for a new location with bigger space. A 7 hectare piece of land along Mendiola Street at the nearby San Miguel district was bought for the new campus.
The cornerstone of the main building (St. Bede's Hall) was laid on September 15, 1925 and was solemnly inaugurated on June 20, 1926, coinciding with the silver jubilee of the school.
The Abbey Church was consecrated on January 13, 1926.

Visite Iglesia - Part Two - Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat.mpg
This is the second part of my Visita Iglesia Series. Enjoy! As you may have noticed, my pictures and footages have inconsistencies. This is because I revisited the church on Black Saturday to get some more footages.
About the Church:
The church and adjoining San Beda College is run and taken care of by the Benedictine monks, who settled and put up the college and church in 1901. Prior to settling in Manila, they served as missionaries and pastors upon setting foot in Surigao, year 1895. The church serves two purposes: as a college chapel for the students of the college and as abbey church for the Benedictine monks.
Benedictine Father Lesmes Lopez and Brother Salvador Alberich did the decorations and paintings on this church. This is one of Manila's pre-war churches that escaped the bombings of the city. Today, it still inspires and awes.

S01E04 Evening prayer with the Benedictine Monks at #SanBedaChurch #AbbeyOfOurLadyOfMonserrat
Vespers is the Evening prayer of the whole church and is prayed in the evening by every priest, religious and some lay people. On Sundays, it is Catholic custom to pray this together in Church. The service comprises of an opening verse, psalms, short reading, prayer and the Magnificat- the song of the Blessed Virgin Mary found in ST Luke’s Gospel.
‘Benediction’ means ‘blessing’ and in this final portion of the service, Our Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for our adoration. After singing hymns of praise, the priest gives us the Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament. We conclude with the seasonal anthem to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Church on Mendiola, dedicated to the Holy Child of Prague in 1926, is a source of pride of monks and #Bedans as the Abbey Church of the #monasticcommunity of the #AbbeyofOurLadyofMontserrat and as the College Chapel of #SanBedaCollege Manila. The #monks sing the #DivineOffice and celebrate the Conventual Mass (Mass of the Monks) daily in the sanctuary, and students, teachers, administrators, and workers gather for Masses that celebrate various events in the life of the school.
The Swedish architect George Asp designed the neo-gothic church. The oil paintings - the most famous and most admired feature of the church – are the work of Fr. Lesmez Lopez, OSB, known for his murals in monasteries in Spain and Australia; while the decorations were done by Dom Salvador Alberich, OSB.
