Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels Basilica), a basilica in Costa Rica, located in the city of Cartago and dedicated to the Virgen de los Pardos, officially known as la Virgen de los Ángeles (the Lady of the Angels). The basilica was built in 1639 and was partially destroyed by an earthquake. The basilica has since been restored and constitutes a unique mix of colonial architecture as well as 19th century Byzantine style.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels is dedicated to the Virgin of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles, a small representation of the Virgin Mary carrying the infant Jesus, said to have been discovered by a peasant girl in Cartago. The story goes that the little girl found the small statue on a rock and took it home. The next morning she found that the statue was not there but back at the rock, so she took it to the priest and he locked it in a small box. The next morning the statue was back a the rock. During the construction, the church was destroyed by earthquakes many times so they finally decided to move it to the location were the statue was found and they were able to finish construction. Many people think that the earthquakes were signs that the Lady of Los Angeles wanted the basilica built there.
Due to the dark complexion of the stone, she is sometimes affectionately called La Negrita or Reina de Cartago (lit. Queen of Cartago). The original statue is kept in a golden shell inside the basilica. In an official decree declared the Virgin of the Angels the official patron of Costa Rica. The Basilica is the object of extensive pilgrimage and visitation by about 1.5 million believers throughout the country, many of whom join in the celebrated 22 kilometer walk to the basilica during the romería, though people can start the pilgrimage from anywhere they want. At the basilica they wash themselves or even drink the water from were the rock on which the statue was found. Scientisits have found this water to be safe to drink since even though there is no filtration nor chemicals used to purify the water.

It is believed that in 1635 a young girl was out in the woods collecting wood for the home fire when she came across a large rock with a doll on it in the shape of a woman carrying a baby. Excited she found a doll, she brought it home and placed it in a box. The following day she returned to the woods and found another doll in the same exact location and it looked the same as the other. When she returned home, she discovered that the 1st doll she brought home was no longer there. It is believed the Doll she found was in fact a likeness of the Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus. Thus a miracle had occurred. As a result, the Basilica De Los Angeles was built a few years later on the very spot where the miracle occurred Annually, over one million people make the pilgrimage to this location in August on the date she discovered the doll. The natural spring river flowing from under ground is considered to be holy water and as such, people come to bless themselves with it, drink it and fill containers to bring to their homes.

Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles - Cartago, Costa Rica
A short video of the famous Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles church located in Cartago, Costa Rica.
The church is dedicated to Virgen de los Ángeles (the Lady of the Angels). Originally built in 1639, it was partially destroyed by an earthquake requiring restoration.
In August the Basilica is the object of extensive pilgrimage and visitation by about 1.5 million Costa Rica believers throughout the country, many of whom join in the celebrated 22-kilometer walk to the basilica during the Romería. Though many people start the pilgrimage from locations all over Costa Rica, some, as a demonstration of their piety, choose to crawl the 22 kilometers on their hands and knees.

Juan Carlos and I did the walk from our home in Cartago, which is about 5 miles from the Basilica. August 2nd is an official National Holiday in Costa Rica called The Day Of Virgin or Dia de La Virgin de Los Angeles. The annual pilgrimage is made because of the Miracle that happened on this location in 1635 when a young women found a doll (volcanic rock & wood) with the image of the Virgin Mary near a natural stream of water and brought it home. The following day when she went back to the same spot, the doll had returned to the spot and this happened more than once. Since that time, people have traveled from all over the world to witness this place and gather water (considered holy) from the still flowing spring.

Inside Virgin of the Angels cathedral, Cartago
Every day hundreds of Costa Ricans pay tribute to the Virgin of the Angels by making their way to the altar on their knees. In this way they pay for favors granted to them. It's a Catholic tradition in my country.
