Route 66 - Our Lady of the Highways shrine
Located on the western frontage road north of Exit 63 of I-55, Montgomery County, Illinois.
Going southbound on Route 66 out of Springfield you will pass this famous shrine just south of Waggoner. Route 66 could be dangerous with steep hills, blind curves, and narrow bridges. The Our Lady of the Highway shrine was built in 1959 to remind motorists of the dangers and to provide a place to say a prayer for a safe journey. Today the shrine is maintained by the Marten family who live next door to the site. It is located on the family farm so it does not violate any civil liberties, separation of church and state or public expression of faith laws.
Note the fragment of 1930s road in the driveway to the shrine.
As you drive along the road from the site there is a 'Burma Shave' style signage of the Hail Mary prayer.
