PubTalk 9/2018 - Hayward Earthquake
Title: The 150th Anniversary of the Damaging 1868 Hayward Earthquake: Why It Matters and How We Can Prepare for Its Repeat
* The Hayward Fault in the heart of the Bay Area is one of the most urbanized faults in the US.
* Studies of the fault reveal that it has produced 12 large earthquakes in the past 2000 years spaced 100-220 years apart.
* There is nearly a 3 out of 4 chance of a damaging M6.7 earthquake in the SF Bay Area in the next 30 years.
* Updated building codes, building and home retrofits, planning, and training are necessary to mitigate earthquake effects.
Places You Wouldn't Want to Live in the U.S.
Are you thinking of relocating somewhere in the States? Make sure you take a look at the 12 worst places to live in the U.S. before you make any decisions about your next home base.
12. St. Louis, Missouri
Over 14% of St. Louis’ population is living below the poverty line. Out of 100,000 residents, every year 35.3 are murdered, which ranks it as one of America’s most dangerous cities too.
11. Reno, Nevada
Reno was the gambling capital of the US until Las Vegas was developed and “The Biggest Little City in the World” has been in economic decline ever since. Reno experiences nearly 39 annual crimes per 1,000 residents.
10. Modesto, California
Despite being home to the largest winery in the world, the unemployment rate was nearly 13% in 2014. Modesto ranks number one in the country for car theft and out of 200,000 residents, up to 10,000 are reported to be gang members.
9. Oakland, California
The economy in Oakland is strong with a good median household income. ($51,683.) However, home to around 50 gangs and a high violent crime rate, Oakland also suffers from high traffic congestion and poor air quality. 190% worse than the national average.
8. New Orleans, Louisiana
The “murder capital of the country, also has one of the worst toxic-substance records. New Orleans has still not recovered from Hurricane Katrina, and was ranked number two in “America’s Dirtiest Cities.”
7. Birmingham, Alabama
27.3% of residents live below the poverty line. Out of every 100,000 residents, 1400 are victims of violent crimes due to the prominent drug trade and high poverty rate.
6. Stockton, California
In 2012, the city filed for bankruptcy. Forbes voted Stockton as one of the most dangerous cities in America due to its high crime rates with over 20,000 violent and property crimes committed last year.
5. Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis is the largest city on the Mississippi River with over 20% of its inhabitants living below the poverty line. In Memphis you stand a 1 in 12 chance of being a victim of crime.
4. New Haven, Connecticut
Home of Yale University, the surrounding areas of New Haven are impoverished and crime ridden. Nearly 68 crimes occur annually for every 1,000 residents.
3. Cleveland, Ohio
Aside from being one of the most corrupt cities in the country, Cleveland also has harsh weather conditions, with an average of 60 inches of snowfall each year.
2. Detroit, Michigan
The city is suffering from urban decay with over 32% of residents living below the national poverty line. According to FBI Reports, Detroit has the highest rate of violent crime of any city over 200,000.
1. Camden, New Jersey
Camden has been on Forbes’ list of “America’s Most Miserable Cities” for years. Riddled with urban decay and political corruption, over 42% of its residents live below the poverty line. It also has 560% more crime than the national average.

[Original Airdate: January 24, 2019]
It’s true that Sparta Wisconsin is the bicycling capital of America, but we found lots of things happening here: soldiers marching, shovelmen building, luthiers crafting, quilters quilting, and, of course, bikers biking. After all, John G. has literally been bikin’ all over Wisconsin! John McGivern is more like Ben’s friend, Willbee Ridin… As in, he will be ridin’ in his car back to Sparta because he’s coming for a longer visit!

Castle Hike!

Yet another great day with our travel clubs. This video is up in Calistoga and was a great photography hike. After the hike we went down the road to Castello Di Amorosa. This tuscan war castle is actually a replica and fantastic winery. Our group had a wonderful lakeside picnic next to the castle and then explored the vineyard. The castle has all sorts of cool wings, tasting rooms, lookout points, and even a replica torture chamber!
Perfect wine hike and trip and we'll be back again soon...

Stunned residents of Weed, California assessed the damage of their northern California town Tuesday,
FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus017362
Aided by calmer winds and another day of fire-retardant bomber sorties, firefighters are mopping up around a fire in the far Northern California town of Weed.
Fire crews had a handle on the 375-acre fire Tuesday morning after it showed little growth overnight. It is 20 percent contained.
More than 1,000 people were forced to flee their homes after the fire broke out Monday.
About 100 structures, most of them homes, were destroyed.
Some homes were burned to the ground, with only chimneys left standing.
The remnants of the Holy Family Catholic Church were still smoking, marked by twisted metal girders lying on the ground.
Maureen Campbell lost her home in the fire. But she said she's even more devastated about the church, where she and her children were baptized and married.
The house up there is no big deal. It can be rebuilt but this is my family church you know. it's much more endearing to me, said Campbell.
Across the street, the Presbyterian Church also burned.
Bill Hofer, a pastor for a different Weed church said the fires will really hurt the town which was already economically depressed.
I feel bad for the people who are probably going to be out of work for a long time, he said.
Parts of the town's wood-products mill also caught fire.
That dry vegetation is just igniting very readily and very easily. So three years of drought, everything is ready to burn, said Cal Fire Captain Amy Head.
The fast-moving blaze, which began Monday, was among nearly a dozen wildfires burning in California that have been exacerbated by the state's third straight year of drought. The tinder-dry conditions have sent firefighters scrambling from blaze to blaze, almost nonstop.
Two fires, one near Yosemite National Park in central California and another east of Sacramento, also led hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

Watch Christian Bale Burn Rubber in ‘Ford v Ferrari’ | Anatomy of a Scene
How do you go about recreating a 24-hour auto race for a movie? If you’re the director James Mangold, meticulously.
His latest film, “Ford v Ferrari,” takes place in the mid-1960s as the Ford Motor Company is trying to come up with a car that can beat out Ferrari in the Le Mans auto race. The American executives bring on the car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and the driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) to aid in that task.
This scene takes place at the beginning of the 1966 edition of the race as Miles is preparing. Narrating the sequence, Mangold said that he wanted to use the camera following Miles down a hallway and then out to the track as a technique to reveal the spectacle of the race, with overwhelming crowds and a heightened energy.
The race starts the same way Le Mans used to actually begin, with the drivers standing across the track from their cars, then running over and leaping into the vehicles before pulling out. Mangold said the moment, captured in one shot, was a challenge to coordinate but was important to give a sense of authenticity to the scene.
He said he shot as much of the action as possible with real cars and stunt drivers, using visual effects not as much for the racing moments, but more to populate the stands so the production wouldn’t need 20,000 extras each day.
Read the “Ford v Ferrari” review.
Learn about the actual race recreated in the film.
