Rene and Guillaume fly the Outer Banks of North Carolina with OBX Helicopters!
Looking us up from Montreal, Rene and Guillaume join us for a deluxe tour of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Departing from Dare County Airport in Manteo, they head south over the Oregon Inlet Bridge to Hatteras Island, checking out Cape Point and the Hatteras Lighthouse. Continuing south, they fly over Ocracoke and Portsmouth islands and on to Morris Marina where they turn around to head back north. Great sights of Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, South Nags Head, the Bodie Island Lighthouse, Wright Brothers Monument and Jockey's Ridge State Park before heading back across the sound to Roanoke Island. Thanks so much for flying with us!

Catching a Ribbonfish on Jennette's Pier in Nags Head North Carolina
I've never seen these show up during my time in the OBX, although I know they are not uncommon. Finally caught one after they messed with me for about an hour.
I drove through North Carolina's Outer Banks. This is what I saw.
Did you know North Carolina's entire coast is made of islands?
In this video, I headed to the lower outer banks, made of barrier islands, south of Wilmington, North Carolina.
We visited Pleasure Island, home to Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. This island, as well as others along the North Carolina coast, was hit hard by many hurricanes in the last three years, including Hurricane Dorian, Hurricane Florence, and Hurricane Matthew.
Along the way, we saw beach homes which are used for summer homes as rentals, some of the shops and places to eat. There isn't a lot on this island - and perhaps 10,000 people live here.

Traveling the NC Outer Banks - Full Episode
Recently I was at work holding down my cubicle and fighting the ever present danger of gettting a gnarly papercut or carpal tunnel injury when I got a text from a good friend asking if I wanted to go on a trip to he NC Outer Banks. I have only ever been a couple other times and none of which was recent so with little hesitation I said YES, let's do it! Deric handled the logistics and a week or so later we were in the Outer Banks unloading a truckload of camera gear. Deric and I both recently made the transition from Canon cameras to the new Sony full frame mirrorless cameras and decided that this would be a good opportunity for us to force ourselves to hike and play with all our gear and see what we could come up with. This is the compilation of all 4 days of our Traveling the NC Outer Banks series. Hopefully there will be many more of these to come.

Vacation Vlog: Outer Banks, NC (August 3rd - 10th, 2014) OBX
My family has been going to OBX for many years and this time Sky joined us! There was some stormy weather but the sunny days were perfect for wave riding. I think that was the most tan I have ever been ha. At some points in the day the salt water started to irritate my eyes so I put on dorky goggles heh. What can I say, they helped! Also dyed my hair the night I got there, not sure if you can tell but in one of the first clips my hair was light blue and then it goes super bright right after.

Outer Banks, North Carolina Trip 2012
Jockeys Ridge, Nags Head, Outer Banks of NC
Today we are visiting one of the most famous landmarks on the Outer Banks that is a favorite of visitors and locals alike- Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Jockey’s Ridge is the tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic Coast and provides activities for the entire family to enjoy. It’s curious to call a pile of sand a “living object” but the park is just so- as the dunes move approximately 6 feet each year, the landscape is ever changing.
You can access the park through the main entrance where you will find a visitor center with a museum and restrooms inside and a wooded boardwalk. Take the time to explore the museum as there are fantastic photos showing the movement of the dunes over the years as well as a great wildlife exhibition. Guided tours and talks are available where a park ranger covers the park’s history, wildlife identification and recreational activities.
Besides the obvious climbing opportunities- the park offers a wide range of family friendly entertainment. Starting with the most popular in the under 12 set is sliding down the dunes and filling every crevice of their body, clothes and shoes with sand. While that may sound unenjoyable for most, I can’t tell you how many belly laughs and joyful faces appear after this simple pleasure. For even more fun, bring along a cardboard box and take the hills on your makeshift sled. This is the place where memories are made- kick off your shoes, release your inner child and join in the fun.
For adventure lovers, you can arrange to sandboard or hang-glide over the dunes. Kitty Hawk Kites offers weekly hang gliding lessons and there is no better viewpoint to see the scenery then while gliding above like a bird. I took a lesson years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it! If you are a bit timid - it is not high on the fear factor and definitely worth a shot.
There are multiple hiking trails that highlight the park’s fuzzy and scaly residents as well as provide a stroll along the marshy waterline and through the trees. Be sure to bring sun protection, a bottle of water to hydrate and shoes as the sand can be up to 30 degrees warmer than the air temperature.
Finally, the highlight of the location, and of your evening, should be watching the sunset from upon the largest dune. It’s one of the only spots on the Outer Banks where you can see both the sound and the sea and is a premiere seat for the nightly spectacular sunsets Mother Nature provides us. In fact, 9 times out of 10 you will be surrounded by applause as visitors celebrate her last kiss of light in the sky.

Hatteras Island, NC (OBX) ORV Permit
The National Park Service has started a new requirements for vehicles seeking to drive off road on Hatteras Island. Effective February of 2012, all vehicles that ride off-road must have a ORV permit. $50 dollars for the week, $120 for the year. Okay fine, another tax stamp for us all. I got over it, and was going to pay for my permit.
What makes this even worse is motorcycles are prohibited off road, reason being? Couldn't get the fellow at the permit office to give me an explanation either. Even after being on the phone, and making me wait 10 minutes while he made a phone call to a higher power to confirm motorcycles weren't allowed on the beaches. Even then, no explanation as to, the reason why? motorcycles are prohibited off-road. (On the signs before the beach access roads, there is nothing that enforces this rule)
So, everyone out there... What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you think its wrong that two wheels are prohibited? Or, is there a good explanation as to why their not allowed?
So in this vlog I rant about Hatteras Islands new policies, and my thoughts on the matter.
Feel free to comment your thoughts on this. Also, please share this with any and everybody you know who feels the same way on the mater. We need to get the word out!

Spotlight on the OBX: Nags Head
Time for another edition of our Spotlight on the OBX video series. I'm a huge fan of these videos; 1., because it gets us out of the office to enjoy gorgeous days on the Outer Banks, but mainly because it gives us a chance to share some insight with you, our guests, about the people, places, and things that we love about the OBX.
Today we are going to continue our tours of OBX towns with a quick tour of Nags Head. Let's shine the Spotlight on Nags Head, shall we?
A little Nags Head history to start: Legend states that early inhabitants of the area tied lanterns to the necks of horses and led the horses up and down the beach after dark to lure merchant ships. Sailors who saw the lights would mistake them for lights from ships and decide to come closer to shore. When they did, they would run aground and Nags Head residents would pillage the ship's cargo.
Shipwrecks, pirates, pillaging...so Outer Banks. J
Nags Head, North Carolina is often used synonymously with the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Strange, isn't it? Do you know anyone that still says I'm going to Nags Head when they are really going to Duck? There are still some highway signs in Virginia that use Nags Head rather than the Outer Banks for directional purposes. Perhaps because it was the most popular OBX destination for so long?
As one of the most developed cities on the Outer Banks, Nags Head is a wonderful place for vacation living. But don't let the most developed cities moniker fool you. OBX development is far from built-up. There is still plenty of empty space to roam, lots of natural habitat, and a hefty dose of amazing history. Plus, amazing restaurants, Jockey's Ridge, shopping, lighthouses, fishing, etc. just a short drive (or walk) away.
Known for its pristine beaches, Nags Head is also home to many attractions including the east coast's largest sand dune, shops, restaurants, night life, water sports and more.
In my humble opinion, Nags Head packs the best bang for the buck. When I talk with guests who are new to the Outer Banks and are not sure where to stay, I generally refer them to Nags Head. Nags Head has a great Outer Banks feel, but still offers plenty of great activities to keep people busy.
As the Nags Head Guide says, A Nags Head vacation experience offers a blend of the old with the new. Visitors still can revel in timeworn traditions while enjoying a host of modern-day comforts.
Enjoy the tour...
