Alternative energy refers to energy sources that have no undesired consequences such for example fossil fuels or nuclear energy. In recent years, alternative energy has been the subject of intense interest and debate. There are all kinds of alternative energy sources that are infinite and pollution-free. Alternative energy sources are renewable and are thought to be free energy sources. Alternative energy is any energy source that is an alternative to fossil fuel. Alternative energy news, and information about renewable energy technologies. Alternative Energy refers to energy sources other than fossil fuels. This has led to the rise of a number of alternative energy sources. Can alternative energy effectively replace fossil fuels. Original video: in the middle of nowhere in the southern california desert are thousands of windmills providing electricity to surrounding cities.
Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources, which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy, often referred to as clean energy, comes from natural sources or processes that are constantly replenished. Have you been wondering what “renewable energy” really means. Renewable energy has many applications today. NCSEA defines clean energy as energy derived from renewable, zero-emissions sources (“renewables”), as well as energy saved through energy efficiency (“EE”) measures. National, nonprofit organization working to advance clean energy and mitigate climate change through innovation in policy, technology and finance. A clean energy revolution is taking place across America, underscored by the steady expansion.
California is outpacing its own ambitious goal for renewable energy. But as utilities started to produce more energy from renewable sources like solar the models started to shift as well. The state of california has mandated 33% of our energy come from renewable sources by 2020.

Palm Spring Windmills CA - USA . The San Gorgonio Wind Farm is impossible to miss when visiting a unique desert tourist destination, Palm Springs. The wind farm is not only one of the five major wind farms in California and a part of the state’s renewable energy portfolio, but also a popular tourist destination characterized by spectacular views and fascinating ecosystems. Several tour operators, including California Adventures and The Best of the Best Tours, promote the wind farm by taking visitors on a wonderful sightseeing excursion and introducing the history, technology, meteorology, and ecology of this environmentally friendly power.
Solitary Windmill
The wind farm was constructed in the San Gorgonio Pass in the early 1980’s and is one of the three primary wind plants in California, along with Altamont Pass near San Francisco and Tehachapi Pass near Bakersfield. A fourth major plant in California, the Shiloh Wind Power Plant, was constructed in Solano County between 2005 and 2009. In 2010, Terra-Gen Power undertook a construction of the largest wind farm in the nation and the fifth major one in California, the Alta Wind Energy Center located in Kern County.
The San Gorgonio Pass, one of the windiest places in California, is a two-mile-wide pass that stretches between the San Jacinto and San Gorgonio Mountain ranges that rise up to 9,000 feet. The winds in this region are a direct result of air passing from the high pressure to low pressure area or the warm desert air mixing with cooler coastal air. The winds here reach average speeds of 15 to 20 mph, with the highest wind speeds occurring in the hot summer months. Wind speeds of minimum 13 mph are necessary to generate wind energy. The San Gorgonio wind farm contains approximately 4,000 wind turbines and generates enough power, which is sold to local utilities, to satisfy the electricity demand for Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley.

PALM SPRINGS, CA WIND TURBINE FARMS-SAN GORGONIO MOUNTAIN PASS-EP58
Come see 4000 Coachella Valley Wind Turbines on the San Gorgonio Mountain Pass, in the San Bernadino Mountains. When they are all on line, they can provide enough electricity to power Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley.
Driving around this area FILLED with these giant tower mounted machines is a treat. You simply cannot believe how stacked on top of each other they all are. We are hypnotized by these babies every time we come across them in our travels!
When we were in Fort Myers last year at an RV Resort, we told other seasoned full time RVers that we would be wintering in the Palm Springs area this year. They warned us it would be windy. I thought,….” it can’t be that bad,…... we will probably hardly notice it,……we are from Wisconsin! ”
WRONG. They neglected to tell me about the “virtual sea” of wind turbines grinding away. I would of been able to figure it out a little bit better with that data,…….there is a reason wind turbines are installed here!
Come join us as we drive through this valley to watch these amazing man-made machines create the magic we call electricity,…..

Wind Farm Turbines of Palm Springs, California (HD)
Everyone who drives from LA to Palm Springs notices the thousands of wind turbines on the western end of the Coachella Valley. This area is known as the San Gorgonio Pass and is the second windiest place in the country. Cool pacific coastal air is forced through the pass and mixes with the hot desert air, making the San Gorgonio Pass one of only three ideal places in California for steady, wind-generated electricity.

WIND TERBINES AT TEHACHAPI- WILLOW SPRINGS ROAD CALIFORNIA.
Wind development in the Tehachapi Pass began in the early 1980s. The area hosts a multitude of wind farms, comprising one of California's largest wind resource areas. The pass is undergoing much repowering activity. The area has multiple generations of wind turbine technology installed, including both single and double blade turbines, as well as the more modern three blade horizontal axis design. The older generation turbines generate kilowatts, and the modern turbines installed generate up to 3 megawatts, depending on the specific turbine and manufacturer. The Tehachapi wind resource area is a net exporter of generation to other parts of the state of California. A state initiative to upgrade the transmission out of Tehachapi (Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project) began in 2008 and is expected to be completed by 2012. This has opened the door to further regional wind power development and multiple projects are expected to be installed to utilize that capacity. A prime location for viewing the turbines is off of State Route 58 and from Tehachapi-Willow Springs Road.
One proponent for further regional wind power development is Southern California Edison who executed power purchase agreements for up to 1,500 megawatts (MW) or more of power generated from new projects to be built in the Tehachapi area. The 2006 contract, which more than doubles SCE's wind energy portfolio, envisions more than 50 square miles (130 km2) of wind parks in the Tehachapi region, which is triple the size of any existing U.S. wind farm.
Other well-known wind turbine locations in California include the Altamont Pass Wind Farm and the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm, near Palm Springs

Palm Springs Windmills
Increasingly popular as alternative sources of energy, wind turbine generators are a type of windmill that produces electricity by harnessing the wind. Wind turbine generators are much less harmful to the environment than burning fossil fuels, but they do require average wind speeds of at least 21 km/h (13 mph). The largest of these windmills stands 150 feet tall with blades half the legend of a football field. The compartments at the top containing the generator, hub and gearbox weigh 30,000 to 45,000 pounds.
A wind turbine's cost can range upwards to $300,000 and can produce 300 kilowatts - the amount of electricity used by a typical household in a month. Almost all of the currently installed wind electric generation capacity is in California. The high-tech megatowers are engineered in cooperation with NASA and nursed by federal and state subsidies. This wind farm on the San Gorgonio Mountain Pass in the San Bernadino Mountains contains more than 4000 separate windmills and provides enough electricity to power Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley.

You’ll begin to see them rising from the desert floor well before you hit Palm Springs city limits. Thousands of windmills stand like a giant metal army acting as silent guards to the entrance of the Coachella Valley.
The windmills are a familiar sight to the locals, but visitors may wonder why they’re here, why there are so many, and how exactly these behemoths work.
There are several wind farms out here, owned by a variety of different companies. The U.S. Department of Energy has bold plans for wind power in America, hoping to increase its use and to approve more designs for different wind turbines over the next many years. Pushing for more wind power, says the Department’s 'Wind Office’ will bring “job creation, energy security, and environmental quality”.
