Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary
Nainital Uttarakhand/ Kilbury Bird Sanctuary
Birds of Pangot, Nainital, India
Pangot, or Pangoot as it is locally known, is around 15 km from Nainital. The drive to Pangot is through the forested area of Cheena Peak Range via Snow View Point and Kilbury, which are birding spots. On a cold winter morning in early February we drove from Nainital to Pangoot taking in the Himalayas as they basked in the early morning sun.
Pangot and surrounding areas are a bird paradise with more than 580 recorded species. Blue whistling thrush appeared on the road often. So did the koklass pheasant, though not so often. The trees chirped with early risers like rufous bellied woodpeckers, sibia, eurasian jays etc.
As we reached kafal house the white throated laughing thrush were monopolising the waterhole as well as the grains thrown by villagers. Himalayan bulbuls sat on high wires awaiting their turn.
In birdworld, size decides hierarchy. A flock of tiny oriental white-eye finally staked their claim to the pond and their exhuberation brought a smile to us.
About 10 kms further to Pangot is cheer point where a group of six cheer pheasants have been spotted. Cheer is a threatened mountain pheasant. We were lucky to spot a foraging family and the camera got a fleeting glimpse of the the long tail of a male cheer.
Pangot is soon changing its character with a large number of resorts coming up to replace the quaint markets of old. The tea shops gladly offered nooks and corners for swallows to nest and almost every villager we met was proud of the birds in the village. The cute little shops with places for the swallows to nest had dwindled and we saw big resorts and three story buildings coming up in a once sleepy village. Will the birds continue to stay here, we wondered.
