Uncontacted Tribe - Manu National Park - Peru
We have just spent the last 7 days in the Amazon rainforest, specifically deep within the reserve area of the Manu national park on the Peruvian side. After a day’s off-road drive from Cusco and then two days down river by boat we heard shouting from the banks.
When we looked over we saw a young boy totally naked shouting at us from the banks. Our guide nearly jumped out of his skin and told us he was from an uncontacted tribe that normally live deep within the jungle and survive without any for of contact from the outside world. These people live in the jungle, totally naked without as much as clothes or a knife. After spending a week there I can tell you that these people are the real deal.
Next to nothing is known about these people, nobody can understand their language (even though there were two guides on board, one spoke Quechua and the other Manchiguenga two languages that form the basis for dialects spoken by other settled tribes in the area), know anything about their religion or even know how many of them there are.
They do know that they are nomads and roam the vast amazon moving on every few months. They call them the Naked People. Since they have now been sighted a couple of times in this area the Peruvian government has now completely closed that area and side of the river to all tourism (which is only about 10 people a day in the entire area).
A few years ago they moved into the area and killed a local farmer. Nobody knows why. Our guide showed the images to a local “settled” tribe we were staying with, the Machiguenga and the whole family gathered to see the images. They were clearly shocked as these people are never seen and our guide who has worked in the jungle his whole life has only seen them once. The Machiguenga told us they move into camps kill the men and take the women. Luckily we were staying on the other side of the river. Lucky as the Naked People can’t swim. Or so they think.
