STORYLINE:
New tall buildings have been banned in Los Banados del Este, on the coast of Uruguay. The picturesque coastal area is under theat from tourist development.
This ban is because Los Banados del Este has been designated a biosphere reserve, one of 90 worldwide recognized by UNESCO. In Uruguay, the United Nations Development Program, through PROBIDE is in charge of protecting the zone.
New maps of the region are being created so that protection guidelines can be closely followed. This is crucial for preserving biodiversity.
Hundreds of species of rare plants and animals live in Los Banados del Este. Their habitat stretches for som 38,500 square kilometres and includes several ecosystems.
Scientific research is provided through PROBIDES by the U.N., the European Union, local authorities and the Global Environmental Facility.
The keeping of the parks is mostly carried out by gauchos (cowboys) who in addition to managing the habitats also have to protect it from hunters.
Next year the U.N. will celebrate the International Year of Ecotourism and Los Banados del Este could be a model of econotourism for visitors from Uruguay, South America, and from around the world.
