Places to see in ( Pateley Bridge - UK )
Pateley Bridge is a small market town in Nidderdale in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it lies on the River Nidd. It has the oldest sweet shop in England. Established in 1827, it is housed in one of the earliest buildings in Pateley Bridge, dating from 1661. Pateley Bridge is also the home of the Nidderdale Museum.
The last Dales agricultural show of the year, the Nidderdale Show, is held annually on the showground by the River Nidd. The show attracts over 14,000 visitors each year. In the early Middle Ages the site of Pateley lay in lands of the Archbishop of York, which came to be known as Bishopside. In the 12th century the principal settlement in Bishopside was at Wilsill, rather than Pateley .
Pateley was first recorded in 1175 (though the document survives in a later copy), as Patleiagate, with 14th century forms including Patheleybrig(ge). The final elements are clear, deriving from Old Norse gata ('street') and the northern dialect form brig ('bridge') respectively. There is more debate about the Pateley section of the name: the usual explanation is Old English pæþ ('path') in the genitive plural form paða + lēah ('open ground, clearing in a forest'); paða lēah would mean woodland clearing of the paths, referring to paths up Nidderdale and from Ripon to Craven, which intersected here. However, the Pateley name forms competed in the Middle Ages with forms like Padlewath (1227) and Patheslayewathe which could be from Middle English *padil ('a shallow place in water') + Old Norse vath ('ford') and it could be that they owe something to this name.
In 1320 the Archbishop of York granted a charter for a market and fair at Pateley. Until 1964, Pateley railway station was the terminus of the railway line running up Nidderdale from Nidd Valley Junction, near Harrogate. Between 1907 and 1937, the Nidd Valley Light Railway ran farther up the dale. Access is now by road, with an hourly bus service from Harrogate.
Pateley is also served by Nidderdale Pool and Leisure Centre. Comprising a 20-metre swimming pool, fully equipped gym and sport hall and two squash courts, the facility officially opened in 2005 after many years of local fundraising. The football team, known as Pateley Bridge F.C. currently competes in the 14th level of the footballing pyramid in the Harrogate and District Football League Premier.

Harrogate is a town in North Yorkshire, England, east of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Its heritage as a fashionable spa resort continues in the Montpellier Quarter with the Royal Pump Room Museum, documenting the importance of local mineral springs. Nearby is the restored, Moorish-style Turkish Baths & Health Spa. To the west, leafy Valley Gardens features the art deco Sun Pavilion.
Harrogate spa water contains iron, sulphur and common salt. The town became known as 'The English Spa' in the Georgian era, after its waters were discovered in the 16th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries its 'chalybeate' waters (containing iron) were a popular health treatment, and the influx of wealthy but sickly visitors contributed significantly to the wealth of the town.
Harrogate railway station and Harrogate bus station in the town centre provide transport connections. Leeds Bradford International Airport is 10 miles (16 km) south-west of Harrogate. The main roads through the town are the A61, connecting Harrogate to Leeds and Ripon, and the A59, connecting the town to York and Skipton. Harrogate is also connected to Wetherby and the A1, by the A661.
The town is served by four railway stations; Harrogate (for town centre), Hornbeam Park, Pannal (towards Leeds) and Starbeck on the Harrogate Line to Knaresborough and York. Harrogate bus station is in the town centre. It is managed by Harrogate Bus Company, the main operator.

Middlesmoor Days.mov
Daniel Mejloumian's (Dan Mej Lou Mian) trip to countryside, to Middlesmoor near North Yorkshire market town of Pateley Bridge was pretty much black and white. He went, he saw, he had his picnic, he played, slept and went back home. The fresh air and fabulous surroundings made him think that everyone should explore the North Yorkshire, beautiful Yorkshire dales, a wild sheep farming area of England, renown for its beauty.

A truly fascinating collection of exhibits is displayed in the original Victorian workhouse, beautifully illustrating the life and history of our Dalesfolk.

Built in 1379 for Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England to Richard II, this massive fortress dominating the heart of Wensleydale is one of the country's best preserved castles.
Pateley Bridge is only a small place - though once of some significance as a lead mining centre - with a population of 2,000, Pateley Bridge is worth visiting for itself but is also within just a few miles of some magnificent amenities, some of which again are little known. The only logical reason for Pateley Bridge not being better known is that it is truly off the beaten track (for some people a recommendation in itself). The town sits in the heart of Nidderdale, less than ten miles from Harrogate and Ripon, accessible via some pretty B roads though sadly no longer served by rail. Pateley has retained its character as a market town, with plenty of small shops that will delight those tired of identikit high streets. One shop is particularly famous, and worth a detour for those with a sweet tooth as it is the oldest sweet shop in the country, established in 1827. The town has won numerous awards in the Britain in Bloom competition and similar events and has some wonderful floral displays, and it is the home of the Nidderdale Museum. Beyond the town there are some fantastic natural sights to draw visitors. The spectacular rock formations at Brimham Rocks are just a couple of miles distant. Yorkshires Little Switzerland, the 80 gorge at How Stean is just a short drive north past Gouthwaite Reservoir with its rare species bird sanctuary. And Stump Cross Caverns, where some marvellous stalactites and stalagmites can be seen in all their glory, is a few minutes to the west along the B6265. Not one of natures glories but mans, Fountains Abbey, a World Heritage site, is only some six or seven miles from Pateley Bridge, as is the famous Ripley Castle. There is good walking for those wanting to enjoy the countryside on foot, including the 53 mile Nidderdale Way that starts and ends in the town. The River Nidd offers fishermen some good sport in season, with trout and grayling to be caught the Nidderdale AC can supply permits.

Knaresborough is an historic market town, spa town and civil parish in the Borough of Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Knaresborough is located on the River Nidd, 4 miles east from the centre of Harrogate.
Knaresborough House on the High Street houses Knaresborough Town Council and the Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs. Knaresborough hosts the annual Bed Race, organized by the Knaresborough Lions Club. It is held on the second Saturday of June. The event was first staged in 1966.
The railway age began in Knaresborough in 1848 with the opening of a railway station on Hay Park Lane; this was replaced with the current one three years later in 1851. The town had a railway line to Boroughbridge until it closed to passengers in 1950; it was dismantled in 1964. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, Knaresborough became part of North Yorkshire in 1974.
Sights in the town include the remains of Knaresborough Castle, Mother Shipton's Cave, the House in the Rock, the railway viaduct over the river Nidd, and St Robert's Cave (dating from the Middle Ages). Knaresborough is the site of Ye Oldest Chymist Shoppe in England, opened in 1720, and the Courthouse Museum in the castle grounds. The principal areas of public open space are the Knaresborough Castle grounds, Horseshoe Field, the King George V Playing Field and Jacob Smith Park, a 30 acres (12 ha) parkland on the edge of the town, bequeathed to Knaresborough by Miss Winifred Jacob Smith in 2003.
Conyngham Hall is situated close to the town centre. It is currently used to accommodate businesses and as parkland. Until the 1980s there was a small zoo in the grounds. Near to the castle are Bebra Gardens, formerly the Moat Gardens, renamed after Knaresborough's twin town in Germany. The Commercial (formerly Borough Bailiff) public house, owned by the Samuel Smith Brewery, is the oldest pub in Knaresborough.
Knaresborough is served by Knaresborough railway station, on the Harrogate Line between Leeds and York. The town is four miles from junction 47 of the A1 (M) Motorway (Great North Road), and on the A59 which links York and Wallasey. It is further served by Transdev and Connexions who both run buses in the area that centre around Knaresborough bus station on the High Street. The closest airport is Leeds Bradford Airport with bus links from neighbouring Harrogate.
Knaresborough is mostly a commuter town however it serves as a local centre for the surrounding rural villages. The town has a small tourism industry and service sector. There is a small industrial estate on Manse Lane in the East of the town. Knaresborough has its own local weekly newspaper; the Knaresborough Post, although it borrows content heavily from neighbouring publications.
