Uros House at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum 2011
The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum in Lafayette, Louisiana is Acadiana's architectural landmark and the largest art museum between Houston and New Orleans.
Since I was a child living on the coast of Peru, I have always loved the beauty of the ocean; everything from the tides to the colors, to the bubbles and the foam. Off the coast of Puno, Peru are the Uros Islands. The Uros Islands are floating islets that are made of totora reeds grown in Lake Titicaca. Everything that ranges from houses to boats to watch towers are made of these totora reeds. Evolving from these two ideas, I am proposing to create a piece for The Times Square Show 2011 that reflects the natural elegance of sea foam and totora reeds. My sculpture will be mounted to a secured structure on Duffy Square, titled The Uros House. It will embody the beauty of the sea foam, while maintain the traditional technique and shape of the Uros islands houses. The structure will seemingly arise from the ground as if it were one with the earth.
Personal, Provocative, and Political: Magical Realism and the Art of Amy Guidry
Personal, Provocative, and Political: Magical Realism and the Art of Amy Guidry, Lecture by Lee Gray, PhD, Curator, Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum, Oliver Hall Auditorium, April 2014.
LOCAL ARTIST TO BE HIGHLIGHTED IN UNIVERSITY LECTURE
Magic realism in the paintings of Lafayette resident Amy Guidry will be the focus of a lecture by Lee A. Gray, PhD, Curator of the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum on the UL Lafayette campus. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, April 2nd, in Oliver Hall Auditorium at 7 P.M.
A North Carolina native, Guidry grew up in Slidell and studied graphic design on an art scholarship at Loyola University. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States. She has been profiled in a number of art publications. Guidry is currently represented by galleries in both Hammond and Austin, TX. Her work has been frequently cited for its technical perfection in its combination of photorealism and surrealism. Collectors and critics have hailed Guidry's paintings as exceptionally thought-provoking and cerebral in their exploration of the human psyche and the natural world. The lecture is sponsored by the Flora Plonsky Levy Endowment of the UL Foundation and the Hilliard Art Museum.
