Warsaw Pawiak - notorious WW2 prison where Germans tortured Polish patriots with Benjamin Lee
Following the 1939 German invasion of Poland, the Pawiak Prison became a German Gestapo prison, then part of the Nazi concentration – death-camp system. Approximately 100,000 men and 200,000 women passed through the prison, mostly Home Army members, political prisoners, and civilians taken hostage in street round-ups. An estimated 37,000 inmates were executed and 60,000 sent to German death and concentration camps. Exact numbers are unknown, as the prison archives were never found.
During the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Pawiak Prison became a German assault base. Pawiak jailers, commanded by Franz Bürkl, volunteered to hunt the Jews.
On 19 July 1944 a Ukrainian Wachmeister (guard) Petrenko and some prisoners attempted a mass jailbreak, supported by an attack from outside, but failed. Petrenko and several others committed suicide. The resistance attack detachment was ambushed and practically annihilated. Next day, in reprisal, the Germans executed over 380 prisoners. As Julien Hirshaut convincingly argues in Jewish Martyrs of Pawiak, it is inconceivable that the prison-escape attempt was a Gestapo-initiated provocation. The Polish underground had approved the plan but backed out without being able to alert those in the prison that the plan was cancelled.
The final transport of prisoners took place 30 July 1944, two days before the 1 August outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. Two thousand men and the remaining 400 women were sent to Gross-Rosen and Ravensbrück. Subsequently the Polish insurgents captured the area but lost it to German forces. On 21 August 1944 the Germans shot an unknown number of remaining prisoners and burned and blew up the buildings.
After World War II, the buildings were not rebuilt. Half of the gateway and three detention cells survive. Since 1990 a surviving basement has housed a museum which, with the Mausoleum of Struggle and Martyrdom, forms the Museum of Independence.

Short tour of Jewish Warsaw (Dec 17, 2010)
A short tour through Jewish Warsaw in winter 2010 - the former Ghetto, its few remaining buildings and walls, the various monuments to the Jewish defenders and victims. The Pawiak prison, the monument to the Warsaw uprising of 1944.
Searching for the Warsaw Ghetto - Poland 4K Travel Channel
No major city in Europe suffered more under the Nazi terror regime than Warsaw. After the withdrawal of German troops, the city was largely destroyed and in most parts practically uninhabitable. All the more remarkable is the considerable achievement the Poles have made in rebuilding the city. Today you see modern urban features in which international star architects like Norman Foster and Daniel Libeskind have played a part. However, the first steps towards reconstruction were taken immediately after the war and aimed at the construction of the old town true to the original.
Later one rebuilt the streets Miodowa, Diuga, and Senatorskaand restored innumerable palaces.
A central topic in Warsaw's war history is the Warsaw Ghetto, into which hundreds of thousands of people were crammed and later deported to concentration camps. The Pawiak prison plays a particular role. 37000 people were murdered and 60000 were transferred to concentration camps from there. Today it is a museum. Another important museum is the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
But we want to see the quarters and buildings of the Warsaw Ghetto and start our search. We are aware that almost everything has been destroyed after the war and many prefabricated buildings stand on the sites today.
We take the Metro to the station Metro Ratusz Arsenał. It was the location of the main synagogue from Warsaw until it was blown up.
But there is no trace of the synagogue anymore. There is supposed to be a plaque (Warsaw Ghetto boundary marker) somewhere, but we didn't come for commemorative plaques. Where once stood the synagogue is the Blue Tower Plaza, an office complex with the logo of the insurance company MetLife at the top today.
On the opposite side of the street is the City Hall of Warsaw with the seat of the Lord Mayor. The museum Kolekcji is in the round extension of the former stock exchange in this at the left end of the complex, in Jana Pawła II. It houses the most important collection of European art in Warsaw, dedicated to Pope John II. 450 exhibits are donations of Zbigniew and Janina Porczyński.
We turn off in into the Senatorska. Here is the Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa, the national theater, and the national opera.

Warsaw Travel Guide - Poland Magical Experience
Warsaw Travel Guide - Poland Magical Experience
Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa) is the capital of Poland and, with 1.7 million inhabitants, its largest city. It is located on the Vistula River (Polish: Wisła), roughly equidistant (350 km, 217 mi) from both the Baltic Sea (Bałtyk) in the north and the Carpathian Mountains (Karpaty) in the south. The medieval capital of Poland was the southern city of Krakow, but Warsaw has been the capital of the country since 1596, and has grown to become Poland's largest city and the nation's urban and commercial center. Completely destroyed by the Nazis during World War II, the city lifted itself from the ashes. Today, almost every building in Warsaw dates to the postwar era — with what little remains of the old structures being confined largely to the restored districts of Stare Miasto (the 'old city') and Nowe Miasto ('new city'), as well as selected monuments and cemeteries, plus midwar modernist districts Ochota and Żoliborz.
Districts of Warsaw :
Centrum (Śródmieście, Wola, Mokotów, Żoliborz, Ochota, Praga Północ, Praga Południe)
The Centrum area, which also comprises the famous Warsaw Old Town. It's made up of six diverse districts and is a mixture of industrial areas and prestigious residential neighborhoods. It will be here that most travelers will spend their time in Warsaw, as most major attractions and hotels are primarily located in Śródmieście, Wola, and Mokotów.
Northern Warsaw (Bielany, Białołęka)
Western Warsaw (Bemowo, Włochy, Ursus)
Eastern Warsaw (Targówek, Rembertów, Wawer, and Wesoła)
Southern Warsaw (Ursynów, Wilanów)
The southern terminal of the Royal Route, Wilanów is home to the Wilanów Palace. Ursynów is home to the historic Natolin park and nature reserve, which hosts the College of Europe Natolin in the Potocki Palace. The area saw intense activity on the part of the Polish Home Army during the Warsaw Uprising.
Historically, the right bank was the first one to become populated, during the 9th or 10th century. However, the present city's central district, called Śródmieście lies on the left bank. The Old Town is fully contained within the borders of the city center. The central point of the city is located at the intersection of Al. Jerozolimskie and ul. Marszałkowska, near the entrance to the Metro Centrum subway station. It is good to know that the Palace of Culture is a landmark visible from almost any location in Warsaw. Should you ever get lost in the city, just walk toward the Palace of Culture and Science. The quarter delimited by Al. Jerozolimskie, ul. Marszałkowska, al. Jana Pawła II, and ul. Świętokrzyska, contains Dworzec Centralny, the main railway station, and the Palace of Culture and Science.
The public transport system in Warsaw is generally well-developed, with some 200 bus routes and 30 tram lines. The route descriptions on the tram stops are easy to follow and the tickets are cheap. It can be painfully slow, however, to travel between destinations far from the city center.
There are plenty of accomodation options in Warsaw at all budget levels. The best accomodation options are located in Śródmieście, Wola, and Mokotów. There are also many business travel hotels in Warsaw/Włochy, near the airport. If you are on a budget, do not assume that hostels are your only option.

Footage of polish prisoner uncomfortably questioned in Pawiak Prison circa 1944
Found by one of our emploees in National Digital Archive. Boy couldn't be older than 20. War is hell.
Pawiak (Polish pronunciation: [ˈpavjak]) was a prison built in 1835 in Warsaw, Congress Poland.
During the January 1863 Uprising, it served as a transfer camp for Poles sentenced by Imperial Russia to deportation to Siberia.
During the World War II German occupation of Poland, it became part of the Nazi concentration-death camp apparatus in Warsaw. In 1944 it was destroyed by the Germans.

Homage to Pawiak Prison, Warsaw: Portrait drawing fragment, 1984, by A.K. Segan ©
New website of artist Akiva K. Segan, Aug. 2018:
humanrights-holocaust-art.org
~
This is a 12 min., 27 sec. video made when Homage to Pawiak Prison was disassembled in summer 2010, the film is titled
Au revoir: Homage to Pawiak Prison, Warsaw, 1984, art by A.K. Segan:
~
Tatra mountains, summer 1984. The artwork was completed in Seattle in autumn '84; it included several drawings mounted on a multi-shaped angular wood frame, and was covered with metallic thread & also twine.
~
I had neglected to have it inserted into a needed plexiglass box, and by the late 1990's it was falling into disrepair. In 2010, with some sections of the wood frame broken, I dismantled the whole work.
~
After I dismantled I took several short films, a personal goodbye, au revoir and do widzenia to the work. This was one of two major artworks inspired by my first trip to Poland that summer, 1984.
~
The other work was Elie's Sin, portraying Elie Wiesel and symbols, both visual and linguistic, of anti-Semitism, Nazi hate and the Shoah, and how we think about and perceive those symbols.
~
I also drew two good sized landscapes while in Rytro, Hayfields, and Rytro landscape, both of which are extant.
~
re: Pawiak Prison: Its century + history was sad, violent and murderous, as it was used to house numerous political prisoners for decades, many of whom were executed. These included Jewish and Catholic Poles.
~
During it's final years it was a Nazi transit and killing center: About 37,000 civilians were murdered in the prison by the Nazi's and another 60 thousand were deported to death camps from the prison.
~
I visited the Pawiak memorial in the summer of '84 with the foreign art students group; the summer course programs which included Americans and Canadians were organized by the Kosciuszko Foundation of N.Y in conjunction with the Jagiellonian University (Krakow Univ.) and Krakow's Academy of Fine Arts. Pawiak Prison history can be read in Wikipedia.
~
Segan is best known as the artistic creator of the Under the Wings (Holocaust) art series; other Holocaust themed art; and the Sight-seeing with Dignity (human rights) art series.
~
In addition to guest teaching worldwide with power-point classes on art about the Holocaust and about post-WWII victims of human rights atrocities, Segan facilitates his Drawing for Healing workshops with classes of all ages, e.g. 5-7 years of age; elderly audiences in their 80's-90's and above; and all ages in-between.
~
Segan's artworks are in gallery/museum, university, library, corporate and institutional collections in Austria, Canada, France, Hungary, Israel, Scotland and the United States.
