Dan's Favourite Bike Ride (And The Road That Made Him Cry)
Ever wanted to know where road cycling “legend” Daniel Lloyd honed his craft as a youngster? We get to know Dan a little bit better on this beautiful New Forest bike ride as he shows us one of his most frequented training routes. Along the way is both tarmac and gravel, including a spot where he once cried his eyes out as a young lad. We also get to meet a couple of mystery guests and, of course, stop off for a beer…or three!

Hubbards, Nova Scotia (Part 1 of 3)
Hubbards is an unincorporated Canadian rural community on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
Hubbards is located on the eastern side of the Aspotogan Peninsula, and along the northern shore of St. Margarets Bay. It borders the communities of Simms Settlement and Queensland.
Hubbards sits astride the county line bordering Halifax County and Lunenburg County and is located in the Halifax Regional Municipality and Chester Municipal District respectively.
Hubbards is located approximately 50 kilometres west of Downtown Halifax and 50 kilometres east of Bridgewater on Highway 103.
ubbards was first settled by French-speaking Protestants, brothers John (1757--1835) and Frederick Dauphinee. As with all those who first settled the east side of the Aspotogan Peninsula, the brothers arrived from across St. Margaret's Bay at French Village, Nova Scotia. Their father emigrated from Montbéliard, France to Halifax and then to Lunenburg. Captain John Dauphinee settled on what became known as Dauphinee's Point. In 1820, John Dauphinee began a lumber mill on Mill Lake.
The origin of the name Hubbard's is likely a corruption of the name Hibbard, Hubert or Hibbert.[1] (The first School in Hubbards was named Hibbert's Cove School.)[2] The Village was Hubbards Cove until the word Cove was dropped (1905). The Fitzroy River which runs through Hubbards may have been named after British Prime Minister Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton (1735--1811).
In the earlier part of the 20th century, Hubbards was a successful fishing community. During the Cold War, the Canadian Forces established a naval radio station at Mill Cove in 1967. CFS Mill Cove was a major employer in the Hubbards area until its automation in the 1990s when it was downgraded to Naval Radio Station Mill Cove.
Hubbards is a popular summer vacation fairhaven. Numerous cottages, inns, campgrounds, restaurants and the Shore Club (the last of Nova Scotia's great dance halls) contribute to a healthy summer economy. The Hubbards and Area Business Association works to sustain a shop local economy. Hubbards features a picturesque locale, especially on Hubbards Cove, with a yacht club, Nova Scotia's smallest provincial park, campground and 10 beaches within driving distance of one another.
The CBC television series Black Harbour was shot on location in Hubbards between 1996 and 1999.
After his death in the late 1950s, oil businessman J.D. Shatford, who was born in Hubbards, left money to the community to start an educational trust fund through which local residents graduating from high school receive bursaries for post-secondary education. The Shatford Trust Fund also built the J.D. Shatford Memorial Library, the Hubbards firehall, and supplied funding to both churches and other community facilities.

Cabot Trail bête noire climb on bicycle
Part of my 70km ride along the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Had the camera mounted to my helmet so I apologize for the shakiness.
The video starts near the base of the climb around 65km into an already hilly ride from just before Ingonish. It is the climb just before Pleasant Bay but I was unable to find a name for it on any map, so I've dubbed it the bête noire which means a person or thing strongly detested and translates literally to black beast. Took my time and paused at a couple of lookout points on the way up to snap some pics and take in the scenery (and rest my outta shape legs!).
MapMyRide says it's an average 7% grade over about 5.5km's. It starts out at a reasonable 2-6% for the first couple of km's but then is consistently above 10-12-15% the rest of the way and although the overlay doesn't show it, I saw it hit 18 & 20% on my computer for brief periods. The steep part starts around the 17:00 mark of the video if you want to skip right to the fun and watch me almost die around the 25:00 min mark then walk the rest of the climb from 28:30.
Even though I named it bête noire, I enjoyed every minute of the climb and the whole ride and vow to return for revenge!
If you ever get a chance to bike the Cabot Trail you should do it, but be prepared to climb! :)

ELF solar car-bike for driver + 2 kids, equals 1800mpg
It looks like a micro-car. It rides like an electric-assist bike. The ELF (“electric, light, fun”) is a solar car-bike hybrid that will keep you out of the rain, or from breaking a sweat, and perhaps convince you to jettison your car for all those trips around town (and to get into shape while you’re at it).
Inspired by solar/human-powered aircraft pioneer Paul MacCready, decades ago Rob Cotter began experimenting with human-powered vehicles. He left a job at Porsche to consult though things slowed down in the nineties when ”people were more interested in minivans and SUVs and things.”
He decided the moment had arrived when, at the end of the nineties he began consulting for the New York City bike sharing, “and realized that if NYC’s putting in about 300 miles of new bike trails there’s a market for vehicles like this,” explains Cotter, “Bicycles that could get people up the hills easier, get them out of the weather, be safer, not tip over, carry passengers, carry a payload, have turn signals, brake lights, all of those things and just started going in that direction from that point on.”
In 2012 he founded Organic Transit- alongside his wife Maureen Costello- in an old furniture store in downtown Durham, North Carolina. To move things along quickly, they launched using an agile design process. “Originally we sold about 50 on kickstarter. We knew we were losing money on each one, but it allowed us to get the vehicles out there and make the changes. So since that time 3 years ago we’ve made about 400 changes to the ELF.”
Today, the ELF is a 160 pound (72.5kg) vehicle that can carry up to two adults (or an adult plus 2 children) or an adult plus 500+ lbs (226 kg) of cargo (there’s space in back for a dozen bags of groceries. Starting at $7,000, it’s classified as a 'bicycle' by US law so it can't legally go faster than 20 mph on just electric power (though pedaling and hills will speed things up).
With a lithium-ion battery and mid-motor drive, it has a range of 48 miles per charge (and further if you pedal). The rooftop solar panel will recharge the battery with 7 to 8 hours of sun or the battery can be removed and plugged into a wall for a 2.5 hour charge.
Since it’s technically a bicycles, the ELF can be driven on bike paths and parked on sidewalks. “So our goal was to be able to take a car-like experience and turn it into a bicycle,” explains Cotter. “This will go anywhere a bicycle will go, all bicycles can ride on many streets, all secondary roads and things like that. It’s like a car except that it’s 160 pounds so it’s a car that you can actually pedal. And the nice thing about it when you’re zooming along somewhere you can go point to point you can go door to door just pull right up to the building and park it in the bike rack up front.”
Organic Transit:
Original story:
Pender Island Bike Camping
When Rob was young and idle, a man in a pool hall gave him his first bicycle and challenged him to ride across Canada. Robert did, and has never stopped pedalling. He has ridden (and continues to ride) across North and South America, New Zealand, Costa Rica, and parts unknown.
BTW, Pender Island should be renamed All Hill Island.

This is the final part in my series on the wonderfull pulse jet and what an end.The jet will push the bike a little faster but its staying on thats the challenage as some of the more keen eye'd people will have noticed the side shaking , yes we could have cured it with better frame better wheels etc but i like its a shit bike n still is.

With New Jersey as home base, we're East Coasters at heart. Which means we can't help waiting for 'cross season to arrive.
In the off-season we dream about it. Which is how we keep coming up with new tricks, like outfitting the Nova Pro with Shimano's electronic shifting Ultegra Di2 group (no derailleur cables to gunk up with mud!). Or re-designing the Nova Race frame with a PF30 BB system for increased strength and stiffness where you need it most. Or trickling down the insanity of 'cross to an all-new, budget-beating price point in the Nova Sport.
Best of all, these bikes don't have to be put up after 'cross season is over. With disc brakes, eyelets and bosses for fenders and carriers, there are possibly some of the most versatile bikes we've ever built. They're as ready for Monday morning's commute as they were at last Saturday's race, and are just as ready to be loaded up with panniers for next month's adventure tour.

Breaking Down Mountain Bike Line Choice (Same Section of Trail 3 Different Lines)
One of the funnest parts about mountain biking is how many different line choices there are , and the variety of skills you can work on! This section of trail is on a local favorite called Laguna Ridge! The cool thing with this section is how many different lines there are for people to practice!
It's an amazing time to be a mountain biker especially if you enjoy documenting your rides for yourself and others to enjoy. There are so many amazing action cameras on the market and today I am testing out the Rylo and seeing how it stacks up to the popular GoPro Hero 4 Evo SS Gimbal combo!
