rulison colorado June 17, 2012 1:17 PM
Project Rulison, named after the rural community of Rulison, Colorado, was a 40-kiloton nuclear test project in the United States on September 10, 1969, about 8 miles SE of the town of Grand Valley, Colorado (now named Parachute, Colorado) near western Colorado's Grand Valley in Garfield County. The location of Surface Ground Zero is 39°24′19.0″N 107°56′54.7″W. It was part of the Operation Mandrel weapons test series under the name Mandrel Rulison, as well as the Operation Plowshare project which explored peaceful engineering uses of nuclear explosions. The peaceful aim of Project Rulison was to determine if natural gas could be easily liberated from underground regions.
After the successful test in which approximately 10 times the amount of natural gas was liberated as compared to traditional methods, fear of radiation made the natural gas, which contained a small and continually decreasing percentage of radionuclides, unmarketable.[1] The Department of Energy began a clean up of the site in the 1970s which was completed in 1998. A buffer zone put in place by the state of Colorado still exists around the site. A January 2005 report by the DOE stated that radioactivity levels were normal at the surface and in groundwater, though a later report due in 2007 is expected to more fully explore if there is subsurface contamination and whether or not radioactivity is still spreading outward from the blast site itself.

Avalanche Ranch near Redstone Colorado Crystal River Valley
I've been all over Colorado for 15 years, but I would say Paradise Found at Avalanche Ranch. Fly fishing, horses, Marble, Redstone all close...but the hot springs, innkeepers, and beauty of this location is as good as it gets!

South Canyon Hot Springs Near Glenwood Springs, Colorado - Review
South Canyon Hot Springs near Glenwood Springs, Colorado - Review
Join Leo and I on this quick stop before we headed back to the airport.
More information on this trail here ????????
The South Canyon Hot Springs, also known as Hippy Hot Springs, are a natural hot spring just west of Glenwood Springs in the South Canyon.
To get to the hot springs from Glenwood Springs, travel west on Highway 70 and take Exit 111. After you exit, take the first left at the stop sign onto South Canyon Creek Road (CR 134). Follow the road left and cross the bridge. 0.5 miles after the bridge there is a pull off on the right. The hot springs are not visible from the road, but a short dirt path from the pull off will lead you down and across the South Canyon Creek and up to the hot springs on the hillside.

Avalanche Ranch Hot Springs - Part 1
Experience Redstone, Colorado
Picture perfect and historic, unplug and unwind in Redstone, a Colorado mountain town experience you won't easily forget. Located in the White River National Forest, Redstone is an original 1902 mining town, and today features shops, cafes, art galleries on its Mayberry-like Main Street. The Crystal River edges the town attracting fly fishers and lovers of rivers. Redstone's beehive coke ovens, serve as a historic nod to its 1899 open-air coal-processing days of 1899, once operated by the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company.
Colorado Driving
The trip back to I70 from the campsite above the Radium hot spring in Radium CO. Probably coolest site I've ever found with the cliffs, Colorado river, and a 95 degree tub. Can't beat it!! Starts on the little state parks trail the up to county road 1 also known as trough road then past State Bridge, and on to 131 to get back to I-70. We then Skied at Copper mountain the rest of the day. Vehicle is my 2003 f150 with 5.4 fx4 lariat.

Glenwood Hot Springs Pool Colorado USA
Visit The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool
The source of the Glenwood Hot Springs' mineral water is the Yampah spring which produces over 3 million gallons of water per day at a temperature of 122°F. It is one of the hottest springs in the world. Before it enters Glenwood Hot Springs’ two pools, the water is cooled down to 104°F for the resort’s hot tub-like Therapy Pool and it’s cooled down even further to the bathwater-warm temperature of between 90° - 93°F for the gigantic main pool.
Soaking in or “taking the waters” is a time-honored healing tradition, and one that is still recommended as a remedy for a variety of ailments. In fact, members of the nomadic Ute tribe were the earliest known people to soak in the healing hot springs which retains the original Ute language name “Yampah,” which translates to “Big Medicine.”
A Natural Hot Springs Pool For The Whole Family
Swimming, soaking, playing and splashing in the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is an iconic Glenwood Springs experience any time of year. The “big” pool, as it’s referred to, contains over 1 million gallons of water and is an aquatic playing field for kids of all ages. There is plenty of room to spread out and play catch or relax on an inflatable. There is even a lap lane and diving area. The Therapy Pool is Glenwood Hot Springs’ version of a hot tub. At 100 feet X 40 feet, it’s significantly smaller than the big pool, but still massive in scale compared to any hot tub. Its size and hotter temperature make it the perfect place for splash-free soaking. The Therapy Pool is also outfitted with bubble chairs and submerged benches that offer visitors still more ways to relax.
During the warm weather months, Glenwood Hot Springs Pool operates two water slides. The Shoshone Chute is a body slide, while riders on the Avalanche Falls slide use inner tubes for their descent. Both slides feature a 47-foot drop which deposits riders into a separate pool overseen by lifeguards. For those looking for a break from the summer heat, pull up a lounge chair under one of the property’s giant poplar trees or relax beneath the newly built shade pergolas. A restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating serves breakfast and lunch, as well as an assortment of snacks and beverages including beer and wine. Ice cream cones and shaved ice with flavor bursts are a favorite treat for the younger set. For some sun-free afternoon fun, guests can play a round or two of mini-golf at the resort’s miniature golf course. Additionally you can find plenty of other fun things to do in Glenwood Springs!

This year's trip to CO was an adventure! This may be my last video with this camera - It's on it's last leg. I lost all footage from our first day of the trip. It is 4 years old, though, and has allowed me to shoot hundreds of videos, so I'm not complaining (... well, not right now).
Places visited this year:
Denver
Breckenridge
Hot Sulphur Springs
The Track at Centennial
Hoosier Pass (hike)
McCullough Gulch (attempted hike)
Colorado Trail - Tiger Run Loop (hike)
Before leaving Denver we had to visit our favorite tap houses:
*Great Divide
*Falling Rock Tap House
We learned the hard way that you shouldn't hike to almost 13,000 feet without being prepared for altitude sickness :)

A drive through Redstone, Colorado
Redstone is located alongside state higway 133 about 27 kilometres (17 miles) south of Carbondale (which, itself, is about 150 miles/240 kilometres southwest of Denver). Redstone sits at an elevation of 2,195 metres (7,203 feet) and appears to be a fun little tourist town with a mining museum about the size of a large garage!

20 Acre fire near Carbondale, Colorado (8 hectares)
This small wildfire was located near the KOA campground just outside of the town of Carbondale along Highway 133. Carbondale is located in Garfield County, Colorado. This recording was made on July 29, 2016. My guess is is that the elevation of this fire was probably just below 2,000 metres (around 6,500 feet). I later learned that the fire was started by an exploding electrical transformer but there's no information as to why that happened...
