Battle Scars S01 E07 - Remembering Ester Whittaker - A Memorial for a Forgotten WWII Nurse
REMEMBERING ESTER WHITTAKER (7:21)
A Memorial for a Forgotten WWII Nurse
When Ms. Whittaker passed away in Pentiction, she left behind her sole possessions; two suitcases containing the sum total of her 89 years. What volunteers have pieced together since is a rich and historic life, including her time spent as a Red Cross nurse overseas during WWII.
WWII Nurse leaves behind one suitcase; you won’t believe what was in it....
People spend their lives building up their own empire, creating a name for themselves and their kin. Being able to live in infamy, means that you will never be forgotten. But what if your entire life that you built up could fit into just a suitcase?
After passing away in British Columbia in 2011, Ester Whittaker left nothing to her name; no property, no will, no family, no friends, nothing except two suitcases. One big and one small. These suitcases were packed with her legacy and the memories she once had as young, smart, and creative mind. Everything that ever mattered to her was in there.
Her passions were being a photographer and more importantly, a nurse, during the WWII era. She spent her young professional life working for the Red Cross during the war helping families and invalid soldiers back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean. She joined the Civil Defense Department in 1946, which allowed her to set sail for Europe assisting children, war brides, and wounded soldiers from WWII. Her passport is full of stamps though it’s unknown what she did on these trips.
Throughout her photographs she is posed in many group photos with her nurse friends. She was always smiling or laughing in each photo, clearly taking pride in what she did. The albums also contained photos of handsome men; none posing with her making researchers think that she never had a husband or serious boyfriend. It’s difficult to figure out exactly what she did after her 46 years of nursing. Researches found that she did eventually move to Summerland. But there’s still a big mystery about her.
In her late years, local people said she kept to herself, leaving the most blanks for investigators to fill in. Penticton Western Newspaper and the Penticton Museum and Archives, are on the mission to unpack the legacy that is Ester Whittaker left behind. What would be left in your suitcase?
