DMD : Arts Education Project

Since 2007, Dancing Many Drums: Arts Education Project (DMD) has reached over 300 Baltimore City scholars through Arts Integration Residencies and Summer Programs. Since inception, DMD has been offered in over 12 Baltimore City and County Schools and has had 4 summer programs. Our scholars have had the opportunity to travel domestically and internationally to study the African Diaspora while learning more about themselves in the process. Summer scholars have visited New York City to study at the Schomburg Center for Black Research and Culture, St. Ann Jamaica, the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica to learn about the people of Limon, Loiza, Puerto Rico, and New Orleans, Louisiana to witness the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the economic and racial inequality that persists in this very country.

DMD uses the arts to build critical thinking skills, develop intellectual and artistic competencies , promote personal growth, and encourage life-long education to take on real responsibility in our organization and their community. DMD also provides a creative haven for youth with no other means of support.

The program gives the youth of our community a chance to receive art education beyond a traditional school setting. Students attend various workshops that focus on key areas of performing arts. Our goal is to encourage youth to have a sense of pride and individuality as they prepare collectively for a performance based on their diverse experiences throughout the program.

A fun craft project for the kids or for a book report, history class, or science project for school, a diorama brings three-dimensional reality to any idea.

Step 1: Choose theme
Decide on a theme, such as the ocean, the rainforest, the solar system, or a favorite scene from a book. Make a list of all the elements to include and any important action in the scene you want to depict.

Step 2: Decorate box
Turn a cardboard box, like a shoebox, on its side. Paint the colors of the background landscape, including the sea, sky, and ground, or glue construction paper to the inside. Decorate the top and both sides. Let it dry thoroughly.

Step 3: Add figurines
Gather your miniature figurines, or cut out figures from construction paper or cardboard painted to look like the people, objects, or animals in your scene.

Tip
Keep proper scale in mind for realism. The miniature standard is 1 foot to 1 inch.

Step 4: Glue figurines
Work from the back of the box to the front, placing your figures inside. Glue them in place when you find the layout you like.

Step 5: Add details
Consider hanging objects from the top of the box, such as birds, or fish in an ocean scene, using dental floss or sewing thread and clear tape. Those extra details will bring life to your display and wow your classmates!

14-Times Lottery Winner Finally Reveals His Secret

When the odds of something happening are really low, you say: “It’s like winning a lottery.” Yet, one man, over the course of 30 years, actually did win the lottery 14 times in a row! Sounds improbable, but this is the real story of a mathematical genius, Stefan Mandel.

It all began in the 1960s, when a poor Romanian accountant was living on $88 a month and came up with a solution that, perhaps, only he could think of: lottery. He spent every minute he had off work and family life analyzing papers on math and working on his own algorithm. And it worked!

SUMMARY:
-It all began in the 1960s, when a poor Romanian accountant was trying to make ends meet and feed his family. He decided to invent his own algorithm to win lotteries.
-Mandel claimed that, in a lottery with 6 total winning numbers, he could accurately predict 5 of them. He won the first prize, which was about $19 thousand, paid his debts to everyone who helped him, and still benefited quite a lot.
-He settled in Australia and got access to every Commonwealth resource available for anyone with Australian citizenship.
-The new method included six steps: calculate the total number of combinations possible in any given lottery, find lotteries where the jackpot was at least three times as big as the number of combinations, raise money to buy every single combination, print out millions of tickets, deliver them to the official dealers and take the prize!
-Over the years he succeeded in creating what he called a “lotto syndicate”: a network of hundreds of investors who believed in his method and were more than willing to help.
-On February 15, 1992, Mandel’s team hit not only the jackpot but also the second and third prizes, along with dozens of minor ones, their overall winnings amounting to about $30 million.
-in 2004 Mandel was sentenced to 20 months of prison in Israel, where he tried to pull another lottery stunt and failed. Since his release in 2006, he’s been living a quiet life on a tropical island off the coast of Australia.

Simon Newman - Thinks Himself Free: Escaped Slaves in 18th Century Britain

Simon P. Newman, Sir Denis Brogan Professor of American History, University of Glasgow

There were thousands of enslaved people in eighteenth-century Britain, brought from around the world by colonists, merchants, planters, clergymen, government officials, and officers. While valued for their labor, these enslaved men, women, and, most especially, children, served as symbols of the success of their masters. This lecture will explore the attempts at escape of some of those enslaved men, women, and children. Drawing on runaway slave advertisements in British newspapers, the lecture will show that although enslavement in Britain appeared mild when compared with the horrors of New World slavery, masters and mistresses continued to believe they held the enslaved as chattel property.

A book signing and reception will follow the program.

Bio: Simon P. Newman is the Sir Denis Brogan Professor of American History at the University of Glasgow. He is the author of numerous books and articles, most recently A New World of Labor: The Development of Plantation Slavery in the British Atlantic (2013), which was awarded the British Association for American Studies Book Prize. His current research focuses on enslaved people who escaped in the eighteenth-century British Atlantic World, and he is the Principal Investigator of the Leverhulme Trust-funded research project “Runaway Slaves in Eighteenth-Century Britain.” During the 2018-19 academic year, he will hold the Mowat Mellon Research Fellowship at the Folger Institute in Washington D.C., where he will be working on a book entitled Runaways: Resisting Enslavement in the British Atlantic World.

Bicentennial Symposium: Poetry & the American People

As part of the celebration of the Library of Congress Bicentennial in 2000, it sponsored the symposium Poetry and the American People: Reading, Voice and Publication in the 19th and 20th Centuries featuring a number of distinguished speakers followed by an evening reading by Robert Pinsky (U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry from 1997-2000) and W.S. Merwin (U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry from 2010-2011 and special Bicentennial Consultant from 1999-2000). In addition to Pinksy and Merwin, featured speakers included Rita Dove (U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry from 1993-95), Louise Glück (U.S. Poet Laureate from 2003-04), and Witter Bynner Fellows for 2000--Naomi Shihab Nye and Joshua Weiner.
