Already at very high altitude, we drove up an additional few hundred meters to the top of the mountains that surround Cusco were we explore the ancient ruins of Saqsaywaman. From here one can see all of Cusco and vast the South American Andes Mountains are.
After a few hours into our journey, we ran out of water ( again ) but came across a community project centre were Honey, the project manager, greeted us with open arms.
It was a lovely plot of land and there were a lot of animals, mostly pets like cats and guinea pigs. In Peru, guinea pigs are eaten as a delicacy called cuy so Fil asked if that's what these ones were for as he was interested in trying this cuisine. Fortunate for these ones they are pets but the hunt for cuy would continue later.
Honey treated us with an amazing meal and showed us the alpaca wool where they make different clothing articles such as coats and hats. Robbie had the opportunity to feed a little baby lamb with a milk bottle.
We walked back into town and headed back to our residence at Loki Hostel. The next step was to pick up our clean laundry in preparation for the 3 day Machu Picchu portion of our trip that requires us to pack everything in our days...everything.
This for most of us is a seemingly impossible feat because we taken off guard by the fact we couldn't take our main backpacks. This forced us to pack our clothes, camera gear and lives into our small day bags. Since we are going up a mountain, the weather is subject to change making packing even more difficult because we had to be prepared for anything.
That night was filled with stress and uncertainty as all of us had to ration what were were bringing and we would only know if our decisions were right after it was too late.
Cusco, often spelled Cuzco ( Spanish ), is the capital of the Cusco Region and Cusco Province, located in southeastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. It is a fascinating city that was once the capital of the entire Inca Empire. For many tourists, it is the gateway if you are traveling to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley or any other Inca sites in the region. Layers of history can be seen from the spanish colonial buildings to the ruins surrounding Cusco such as Saksaywaman and Sacsayhuaman, the site of ancient battle involving the Inca. At 3,400m / 11,200 ft Cusco presents altitude sickness for the majority of people who live at a much lower elevation and it played a major role in our exploration.

Altitude Sickness capital of the World! (Cuzco City Tour) - Cusco, Peru ????????

Episode 27
Tired and exhausted, we dragged ourselves to airport and flew to Cusco. Once we arrived and started carrying our bags the first signs of altitude sickness were showing and we had to watch those signs closely, not over exerting ourselves.
Cusco is a stunning city is surrounded by the Andes Mountain Range and the size of the mountains makes the city of 500,000 feel more like a mountain village. With over 500 years of culture there are plenty of things to peak ones interest including markets, churches and ancient ruins nearby.
We set out to see the city at night and it started with Fil joining a dance with locals in a city square. We quickly found out that the Historical Center of town we were staying in is built on side of a mountain there is no flat ground, it is always stairs and that is a big factor as we were all experiencing altitude sickness.
After huffing and puffing our way back to the hostel we found the computer charger was fried no longer worked. This was a huge blow because it is needed everyday to transfer camera footage from multiple cameras. We went to sleep wondering if our Earth Unraveled Season 1 would end short.

Cusco City in Peru
Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes, was once capital of the Inca Empire, and is now known for its archaeological remains and Spanish colonial architecture. Plaza de Armas is the central square in the old city, with arcades, carved wooden balconies and Incan wall ruins. The baroque Santo Domingo Convent was built on top of the Incan Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha), and has archaeological remains of Inca stonework.

Andes - Cusco
In the mid-1980s, a lot of music professionals and session musicians from jazz, pop, and jingles began manufacturing instrumental moods under the rubric of New Age music. Cusco is one of those groups. The band's founders, Michael Holm and Kristian Schulze, are guns for hire and refugees from German '60s and '70s pop music. Named for Cuzco, the ancient Incan city of Peru, Cusco has all the elements that turned New Age into an industry trend. The sound includes lots of synthesizers, perky rock-funk rhythms, and enough sampled panpipes to provide virtual plumbing for all of Berlin. For every Andean-inspired piece like Montezuma and Waters of Cesme, there's also a cornball workout like Didjeridoo, which subjugates this aboriginal instrument to an arrangement right out of Easy Listening 101. The Best of Cusco draws from seven of their first eight American releases, including the popular Apurimac and Cusco 2000. --John Diliberto

Paragliding Tour in Cusco - Parapete, Machu Picchu, SAM Travel Peru
Day 1: Chinchero - Paragliding camp - Cusco
At 8:30 in the morning we go to Chincheros, take instructions, and try incrementally longer jumps, until a jump of some 500 meters of flight. The guide shows you how to control the paraglide in the air and do zigzags (slaloms). We will return to Cusco around 2:00 in the afternoon.
Note: On this day, we can organize a tour to Moray and Salineras, as a complementary of your adventure paragliding tour in Cusco!
Moray ruins; located at 3,450mt, we find the agricultural terraces of Moray with their complex system of irrigation and terraces. These terraces served as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at an altitude that they would typically only grow in the tropical Andes. It has also been suggested that they had a cosmological meaning.
Salt Mines; (Salineras) which consist of 3,000 small pools roughly 5 square meters (53.8 ft²) in size. Every three days, during the dry season, workers fill the pools with salt water that comes from natural springs at the top of the Maras complex, and when the water evaporates from the pool the salt is left for collection. This process is carried out over a one month period until the pools reach an approximate volume of solid salt that is 10 centimeters (4 inches) in height. The salt is ground up, treated with iodine, and packaged and sent to the various markets of the region.
NOTE: The PARAGLIDING adventure tour can be organize in Lima by SAM Travel Peru.. !

CUSCO - Capital of the INCA Empire in the Peruvian Andes
This video is based on our visit in October,2014, to Cusco, the erstwhile Capital of the Inca empire and the surrounding Inca citadel of Saksaywaman and the Puka (Red) Pukara (Fortress) in the Peruvian Andes. From Cusco via Poroy along the Urubamba river we went to Machu Picchu - the 'hidden' city of the Incas.
