What to expect staying in a rainforest lodge in Peru ????????
As part of our superb Peru tour with GAdventures, we visited the amazing Tambopata Eco Lodge for 2 nights, led by our friendly, well informed guide, Leo.
We stayed in a bungalow with no electricity and solar heated shower, which might sound a bit rustic but was actually lovely. Well equipped with a real bathroom, flushing toilet, real beds and mosquito nets, table, chairs and hammock!
The restaurant served excellent, fresh buffet food and in the bar you could buy an ice-cold beer in the evening while they ran the generators for a couple of hours until blackout. After this all you could see were fireflies!
We did a night wildlife walk on the first evening, taking strong advice to tuck trousers into socks to stop ants crawling into socks/shoes. Then the second morning we did an early morning explore, spotting wildlife all the way.
This was an awesome experience, really well prepared, really well guided, yet still felt like miles from civilisation!

SALKANTAY TREK PERU VLOG
4 DAY, 3 NIGHT SALKANTAY TREK
DAY 1: CUSCO - MOLLEPATA – CHALLACANCHA – SORAYPAMPA
7.45 mi, 10-15k ft elevation
It's a grueling early morning start, but you are eased in with breakfast and lots of coca tea and meeting the new group members. The late morning trek starts off slow and steady, so as not to push the limits at 10k ft elevation. In the afternoon, upon reaching the beautiful sky dome campsite, there is plenty of food and an optional hike to Lake Humantay. The uphill hike is brutal, but the bluish-green hues of the lake are worth it. The weather is below freezing at the sky domes, but the unobstructed view of the Milky Way is so memorable.
DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA - SALKANTAY PASS - WAYRACMACHAY - CHAULLAY
13.7 mi, 9-15k ft elevation
Another early morning start at 5 am, but the tour guide provides a wake-up call and a hot cup of coca tea. After breakfast, there is the option to hike the Trail of the 7 Snakes and Gringo Killer straight uphill or take a horse for $40 USD. Guess which option I chose! At 15k ft elevation at Salkantay Pass, the horseback riders and hikers meet and hike downhill together to the Andean huts, with a few short pitstops in-between for Coca Cola and lunch. Definitely the longest and hardest day with so much elevation gain and change in temperature. The reward is a hot shower (for 10 soles) and dinner at the Andean campsite.
DAY 3: CHAULLAY - LA PLAYA - SANTA TERESA - HYDROELECTRIC - AGUAS CALIENTES
16.1 mi, 5-9k ft elevation
A night without electricity in the Andean huts is rough! We were using our cranking emergency lights and flashlight on our iPhones to no avail! We bid farewell to our wonderfully talented cooks and horsemen, and left for the playa in all our cold-weather accessories. Soon thereafter, we were in the midst of the cloud forest and stripping to our lightest layers for the most favorable portion of the hike, weather-wise. Food and fun at the playa included learning how to play juego de sapo or toad in the hole pub game, as well as roasting our own coffee from start to finish. After lunch, we took a bus to Hydroelectric and hiked along the Peru Rail train track all the way to Aguas Calientes, the town before reaching Machu Picchu.
DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU - MONTAÑA MACHU PICCHU
8-10k ft elevation
Another early morning for the most important day, Machu Picchu. At least the prior night was the most comfortable night at the hostel with electricity and hot showers. We hiked Montaña Machu Picchu, but there is not too much time in Machu Picchu itself with our tight bus and train schedule to catch back to Cusco. You can't possibly do and see everything in Machu Picchu in one day, so I advise to pick and choose what is most important to you (hike, Sun Gate, etc.)! Oh, and don't forget the coveted stamp of Machu Picchu in your passport, which you can get right outside the exit!
Overall, it's a grueling but rewarding experience with unparalleled views. Personal highlights included the ever-changing landscape, the most hard-working team of trekking specialists/chefs/horsemen (Edwin, David, Eber), the tastiest spread of Peruvian cuisine, and such a supportive and welcoming group from all over the world! Crossing paths with complete strangers, even for a short time, feels incredibly enriching and really is what traveling is all about. #franquilo #salkantay #peru

Flight of the Condor & Humantay Lake - Peru Ecocamp
The Flight of the Condor & Glacial Lake Humantay tour was designed with the nature lover in mind. It features easy to moderate walks combined with comfort and relaxation at our luxurious Pincopata Ecocamp. The trip offers the chance to visit the Killarumiyoq archaeological site where the lunar cycle was charted and fertility rites honoring Mother Earth were performed during the height of the Inca civilization. Incredibly, the moonstone remains untouched and the peaceful site offers the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the Inca culture.
