One of the most magnificent geologic features in the world is the Rainbow Mountain of the Peruvian Andes. The mountain is striped with colors ranging from turquoise to lavender to maroon and gold.
The reason we see the rainbow coloration in the stratigraphic layers of the Rainbow mountain is largely due to weathering and mineralogy. Red coloration of sedimentary layers often indicates iron oxide rust as a trace mineral. Similar to how a nail will rust and turn red when oxidized, sediments that are iron rich will change when exposed to oxygen and water. This, in combination with uplift and tectonically driven crustal shortening has tilted the sedimentary layers on their side exposing stripped stratigraphic intervals.
The different coloration is due to different environmental conditions and mineralogy when the sediment was originally deposited and subsequently diagenetically altered. The introduction of goethite or oxidized limonite will introduce a brownish coloration to sandstones. The bright yellow coloration could be due to iron sulphide as trace minerals within the pore cement. In addition, chlorite will often color sediments varying shades of green dependent on diagenetic history and concentration.

Choquequirao - The Cradle of Gold
Choquequirao sits in the saddle of a high Andean ridge, 3000m./10,000 ft. above sea level and 1,500m./5,000 ft. above the roaring waters of the Apurimac River. Ringed by spectacular snow-capped peaks and flanked by plunging, thickly forested slopes, the city is an inspiring example of an elite Inca ceremonial center, dedicated to the worship of the mountain gods, the river and the elements of nature.

Choquequirao ruins was most likely built during the reign of the Inca king Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui and is considered to be the last bastion of resistance and refuge of the Sons of the Sun, who fled from the city of Cusco when it was under siege in 1535. Led by Manco Inca Yupanqui, they took refuge in Choquequirao. Presumably, it was used both a check point to access the Vilcabamba Area and a cultural and religious center. The city played an important role as it was a connection between the Amazon Jungle and the city of Cusco.

Choquequirao & Machu Picchu - the Ultimate Andean Trek
*Mountain Kingdoms no longer offer this holiday, however, we do offer a wide variety of small group adventure and an expert tailor made service.*
This short video of Mountain Kingdoms’ trek to Choquequirao will give you a tantalising taste of this superb 8-day trek to the sister site of Machu Picchu which forms part of a 17-day walking and trekking holiday in Peru.
Mountain Kingdoms have created a unique route which avoids the gruelling climb up from the Apurimac River that traditionally comes at the start of the trek. By reversing and improving the route the experience is much more enjoyable.
Starting from the little-visited Inca ruins at Vitcos, the trail to Choquequirao travels through a remote, wild region of high uplands and tropical valleys known as the Vilcabamba. This is a steep mountainous region of extreme relief that first served as a jungle border province for the Incas and later as their last refuge when they resisted Spanish colonisation. Thick cloud forest vegetation covers much of the area up to around 4,000m whilst above it, snow-capped peaks soar skywards. The video will give you a glimpse of the stunning and varied views you will experience every day on the trek to Choquequirao.
Led by an expert guide and supported by ponies that carry all the kit, it takes five days of hard trekking over high passes, along airy ridges and into deep valleys to reach the Choquequirao ruins. It is unlikely you will see any other trekkers although you may well meet some of the local Quechua people still living off the land, using much the same farming tools and methods as their Inca ancestors.
The Inca ruins of Choquequirao are situated on a prominent ridge at around 3,000m overlooking the churning waters of the Apurimac River almost 1,800m below. It has a magical backdrop of ice-sculpted mountains and the views from Choquequirao are simply breathtaking. The ruins cover an extensive site of 1,800 hectares and are on several levels. At the very top is a flattened hilltop, ringed with stones, creating a ceremonial platform. First excavated in the 1970s, the Peruvian government are still recovering more of the ruins each year from the surrounding jungle. As with other significant Inca sites, Choquequirao is aligned with the movement of the sun and stars and has an extensive array of temples, terraces, plazas, food stores and other domestic buildings. Camping just below the ruins, you will have a full day to explore the site before completing the ultimate Andean trek.
There is time to visit Choquequirao’s more illustrious sister, Machu Picchu, before the trek as well as other important sites in the Sacred Valley near Cuzco. Not only does this provide an excellent introduction to Inca culture but also essential acclimatisation ahead of the trek.

Trek up Machu Picchu 'Old Mountain' 3060m Cusco, Peru
Machu Picchu, or 'old mountain' gives its name to the Incan settlement on a nearby ridge. Whilst the works of man are interesting and have heritage, Pachamama's achievements dwarf them in scale and time.
