We Love Peterborough - Peterborough Lido (prep)
Day 22 of our 30 days in May challenge: Peterborough Lido
So today I joined the Friends of Peterborough Lido and Peterborough Museum & Vivacity Heritage to get the Peterborough Lido ready for the summer season.
Volunteers and workers have been here all week with pots of paint, brushes, cleaners, maintenance men, garden men, etc.
We are on a mission to be ready for this Saturday’s opening. If you ever feel like giving a hand with anything like this then please do look up the friends of the Lido because they’re always open to new members that can help them. It’s just basically a bunch of likeminded people that love the Lido and don’t want it to disappear.
So I arrived today at 8:30 this morning and teamed up with Tom and we’ve both been cleaning all the deck chairs for you, making sure there are no spiders cobwebs, etc., so they’re clean, safe and ready to hire.
We’ve put out your benches so that you have somewhere nice to sit in the play park area & be able to watch the kids playing. And then we had the lovely job of cleaning the cubicle so there are nice and clean places to change.
The sun is out, it’s been glorious here and I’m now on my way home for some lunch!
This year The Lido will be offering additional sessions such as Midnight swims, extending our early morning swim offering to include Sundays, and back by popular demand our Summer Solstice. More details to follow so watch the Vivacity Website or social media for more info.
Remember, swimming is free for all children under 5 with a Vivacity card (get this from any Vivacity library), so treat the family to a perfect day out.
A bit of history: The Lido has been standing since 1936 and is one of the few survivors of its type still in use in the United Kingdom. It's a historic landmark in Peterborough with wonderful elements of art deco design, the Lido and surrounding gardens cover an area of roughly two and a half acres, lying adjacent to the embankment. The main pool is 8 feet 10 inches (2.69 m) deep at the deep end sloping to 2 feet 11 inches (0.89 m) at the shallow end and holds 500,000 gallons (2,273 m³) of water. There are two other heated outdoor pools (learner and paddling), a large sunbathing lawn, balconies overlooking the main area and a small cafe area. It was designated a Grade II listed building in 1992.
I hope to see everybody on Saturday at the grand opening... it’s set to be a nice day with nice weather and again as I said in the video if you do one thing this year come with your friends, your family, your kids, your work colleagues and have a day at the Lido which is something special and unique to us.

'Kumbaya' sung by West Bridgford Social Singers (07Nov2015)
I have just discovered (7th November 2015) West Bridgford Social Singers. I already knew their conductor Simon Thompson through his acapela group 'Oldish Spice', but I was unaware of this wonderful choir (waiting list to join, by the way). I have been in a few choirs myself and I've heard many others, but I have to pass on you how amazingly good this choir is - sweet, mature, balanced, disciplined and - likeable.
This video is a recording of 'Steal Away' which they sang at a fund-raising event in aid of Papworth Hospital, hosted by Fernwood Comprehensive School in Wollaton, Nottingham. Their repertoire is wide ranging and entertaining and that evening they sang a dozen songs, all different, no specific genre having prominence.
Cheers,
Al Windsor
PS here are some notes about the song taken form Wikipedia
Kumbaya or Kumbayah or Cumbaya (Gullah, Come by Here—Kum ba yah) is a spiritual song first recorded in the 1920s. It became a standard campfire song in Scouting and summer camps and enjoyed broader popularity during the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s.
The song was originally a simple appeal to God to come and help those in need.
According to Library of Congress editor Stephen Winick, the two earliest versions whose year of origin is known for certain were both collected in 1926, and both reside in the Library's American Folklife Center. No precise month or day was recorded for either version, so either may be the earliest known version of the song. One was submitted as a high school collecting project by a student named Minnie Lee to her teacher, Julian P. Boyd, later a celebrated historian. This version, collected in Alliance, North Carolina, is a manuscript featuring lyrics but no music. The other 1926 version was recorded on wax cylinder by Robert Winslow Gordon, founder of what began as the Library of Congress's Archive of Folk Song, which became the American Folklife Center. The singer's name was H. Wylie, and the song was recorded within a few hours' drive of Darien, Georgia, although Gordon did not note the exact location. Between 1926 and 1928, Gordon recorded three more versions of traditional spirituals with the refrain Come by Here or Come by Heah
