Despite the gaps, it proves to have a richness in history and new modern districts full of things to do. As the host of the 2010 World Cup, many areas have been revamped into cool spaces with new purpose. The people are friendly and the recent improvements in transportation help Johannesburg travel be a great addition to a South Africa visit.
The area gained its wealth originally from gold and diamond mining. It has grown to be the third-largest city on the African continent, and the only one not near a major body of water. The country has eleven national languages, and the city mirrors that diversity to a T. Though English is the most common, Zulu, Afrikaans, and Xhosa are spoken along with others. Travel to Johannesburg offers new experiences for every kind of traveler.
Visitor should also be advised to take caution. Avoid walking around alone in parts of town at night, and ask locals for the safest places to withdraw money. Take care of your belongings, and keep a wary eye.
Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest city and capital of Gauteng province, began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. Its sprawling Soweto township was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now the Mandela House museum. Other Soweto museums that recount the struggle to end segregation include the somber Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, a former prison complex.
Sandton is an affluent city situated in the Johannesburg Municipality, Gauteng, South Africa. The name comes from the combination of two of its suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston.[2] In 1969 Sandton was promulgated as a municipality in its own right,[3] but lost its status as an independent town after the re-organisation of South African local governments

South Africa Vlog: Shopping in Johannesburg
December 21, 2012
We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice.
If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi.
If you're staying at the Garden Court Hotel, which provides a free shuttle bus service to and from OR Tambo Airport, take the Gautrain back to Rhodesfield Station, which is one stop before the airport. This will cost you just 27 Rand (compared to 115!)! The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from Rhodesfield Station. We strongly suggest that you take this option during daylight hours. If your shopping trip extends into the night, then we recommend that you pay the extra money to take the Gautrain to the airport then ride the free shuttle bus to the hotel, which is the safest option.

In this episode, David is staying 24 hours in Johannesburg, South Africa. David’s first stop is the Neighbourgoods Market. This Saturday market is housed in a modernist building that has a spectacular 15-story wall mural by the famed artist Eduardo Villa. The market has farm fresh foods and specialty items.
Second thing to do in Johannesburg is visit the Apartheid Museum. The museum is dedicated to illustrating apartheid and the 20th century history of South Africa.
Afterwards he heads to Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world where two Noble Prize winners lived. President Nelson Mandela and the Archbishop Desmund Tutu. Next up is Nelson Mandela’s House, which has now been turned into a museum.
David then visits to the Orlando Towers. These iconic towers now offer any adrenaline junkie the opportunity to bungee jump! David decided to go for the leap!
And the last place David visits is the Lesedi Cultural Village. Located 45 minutes north of Johannesburg, this cultural village gives people an insight on the lives of five different tribes from South Africa. The five tribes are the Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele tribes.

South Africa Johannesburg Tour Guide, World Famous City
South Africa Johannesburg, World Famous City Tour Johannesburg, more commonly known as Jo’burg or Jozi, is a rapidly changing city and the vibrant heart of South Africa. After almost 20 years of decline and decay, the city is now looking optimistically towards the future. Its centre is smartening up and new loft apartments and office developments are being constructed at a rapid pace. The cultural districts of Newtown and Braamfontein, with their theatres, restaurants, cafes and museums, teem with creativity and energy. The Inner City itself, once a no-go zone, is becoming a tourist gem, with plenty of pleasant surprises. Oh, and there's Maboneng. On the eastern fringes of the Inner City, this hipster-friendly urban neighbourhood is considered as one of the most successful urban-renewal projects in the world – it's sure to seduce you.
However, the wealth divide remains stark, and crime and poverty haven't been eliminated. The affluence of Rosebank and Sandton breeds discontent in desperately poor neighbouring townships such as Alexandra. Still, Jo’burg is an incredibly friendly, unstuffy city and there’s a lot to see here, from sobering reminders of the country’s recent past at the Apartheid Museum to the progressive streets of Melville. So delve in and experience the buzz of a city undergoing an incredible rebirth.
