Pingo National Landmark is a natural area protecting eight pingos near Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.It is in a coastal region of the Arctic Ocean which contains approximately 1,350 Arctic ice dome hills—approximately one quarter of the world's pingos.The Landmark comprises an area roughly 16 km2 , just 5 km west of Tuktoyaktuk, and includes Ibyuk Pingo—Canada's highest, exceeded in height only by Kadleroshilik Pingo in Alaska—at 49 m .The Landmark, which lies within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, is managed by Parks Canada under the National Parks Act.

Islands, Mounds and Pingos ? of the Yukon & Northwest Territories

Hi folks! Another excursion to the far northwest of Canada to view more unusual formations found in the area. Not to say these are all artificial creations, but I really have to wonder about many of them, if not all : )

Then there's the Pingos! What are pingos? I wondered the same thing until a couple of months ago. Parks Canada even has a Pingo National Landmark site by Tuktoyaktuk, with 8 pingos under national protection, including the tallest pingo at about 49 m high and 300 m across the base!

Pingos are ice-cored hills of various sizes and are found in very select areas of the NWT, Yukon, Alaska, Siberia and a few other arctic areas. It's thought pingos are formed when lakes dried out allowing a small dome of spring fed ice to form on the lake bed that are eventually covered with a peat moss soil. The spring then continues to slowly pump water into the ice dome and the pingo blooms and grows from there. Later the lakes re-fill with water to create pingo islands!

Other pingos are formed on land, without the need of an empty lake, but their formation process is not as well understood, but theories abound. Some of the pingos are of a very old age, some 10,000 years or older, others are thought to be 4-5,000 years old. While some of these domes are shown to grow very slowly over the last few decades, and other ice cores appear to be melting, creating great fissures in the domes, causing the pingo to shrink and even collapsing back into their little lakes.

There have been studies performed on pingos over the last few decades; core samples reviewed, measurements of growth and shrinkage taken (a very slow process), and other analyses; but I have not yet found a study that has actually located the source of the springs underneath them causing their formation in the first place and it appears it is a geologically understood process in pingo making, because what else could it be?!


Well I have to wonder... maybe these are ancient structures of earth and wood from millennia ago, hollow on the inside for one reason or another? A great flood may have covered the land in the distant past followed by a great deep freeze (like the one that froze the mammoths with the buttercups in their mouths they were eating at the time as has been found in the far north) and the water trapped within the domes hollow became the ice core said to be at the heart of all the pingos, large and small. When the deep freeze snow and ice eventually retreated from the area, at least for some of the year, the thick roof covering of the domes insulated the 'ice cores', preserving the ice through time.

The very large pingos have a striking resemblance to the large earthen pyramids built be the moundbuilders in eastern North America. It's also not much of a stretch of the imagination to see the smaller pingos as earthen dwellings or sod homes known to be used by many arctic dwelling peoples who resided below the ground covered by a thick roof of earth and sod with a single doorway and no windows. I'm not saying this is what all pingos are... I'm just saying : )

Most of the pingos are at the end of the video but likely some of the islands earlier in the video would be considered to be pingos by the experts. Personally I think there is too much similarity in the sizes, locations and shapes of the pingos to all be exclusively a natural creation, especially round pingos forming in non-round lakes and the arrow-shaped versions, although I have viewed far more examples than what I included in this video. Many pingos are also located in close proximity to ancient roadways in the area : )

A pingo, also called a hydrolaccolith, is a mound of earth-covered ice found in the Arctic and subarctic that can reach up to 70 m in height and up to 600 m in diameter. The term originated as the Inuvialuktun word for a small hill. The plural form is pingos.

A pingo is a periglacial landform, which is defined as a nonglacial landform or process linked to colder climates.
Periglacial suggests an environment located on the margin of past glaciers. However, freeze and thaw cycles influence landscapes outside areas of past glaciation. Therefore, periglacial environments are anywhere that freezing and thawing modify the landscape in a significant manner. They are essentially formed by ground ice which develops during the winter months as temperatures fall.

Tuktoyaktuk in the Mackenzie Delta of the Northwest Territories has one of the highest concentrations of pingos, with some 1,350 examples. Pingo National Landmark protects eight of these features. Alaska is home to the Kadleroshilik Pingo, the highest known pingo in the world.
Other places with pingos include Nunavut and Yukon in Canada, Greenland, Siberia, and the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen.

Some old pingo ruins can be found in Norfolk, England and in the Netherlands, in Dantumadeel and Opsterland in the province of Friesland, and also in the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen. Recent estimates indicate that more than 11,000 pingos exist on Earth, with more than 6,000 alone in northern Asia.
