Pinkasova synagogue and Jewish memorial in Prague
Pinkasova synagogue and Jewish memorial in Prague
Pinkas Synagogue
The Pinkas Synagogue is dedicated to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust from Bohemia and Moravia; their names are inscribed on the walls of the main nave and adjoining areas. The interior of the synagogue comprises Memorial 77,297, which was designed and executed by the painters Václav Boštík (b. 1913) and Jiří John (1923-1972) between 1954 and 1959. The memorial was closed in 1968, however, since the building was in an increasingly poor state of repair. After remaining closed for a long time, the building was eventually reconstructed and, following the collapse of the Communist regime, a project was launched to renovate the memorial, which reopened in 1996.

The text of the inscriptions was compiled from card indexes, which were drawn up shortly after the war on the basis of extant transport papers, registration lists and survivor's accounts. The names of Holocaust victims, together with their dates of birth and death, are inscribed on all the interior walls.

Arched Ceilings of the Pinkas Synagogue - Pragues Pinkas Synagogue is now a Shoah Museum.
Pragues picturesque Pinkas Synagogue in the Josefov district is now a museum to the fallen from the Shoah / Holocaust, to the Jewish vistims of the Nazi genocide in World War 2. From 1939 to 1945, the majority of the Jewish inhabitants of Bohemia and Moravia were murdered either in Auschwitz's gas chambers or by mobile killing squads.
The Poem
..................................
The arches ceilings I did not see there
Nor fancy windows of stained glass
All that in my mind that stayed
Was not images of beauty, alas
But no, the tale of tears
Etched in the walls instead
Name after name of those once alive
Who after the Holocaust were dead.
Arching ceilings are meant to make us think
Of higher things, the existence of God
Our just reward or punishment
According to the road we've trod.
But for me the ceilings I did not see
Their beauty, and the windows I missed
But I saw the names upon the walls
That beg the question: does God at all exist?

Ta obsahuje téměř 40 000 předmětů a 100 000 knih z Čech a Moravy.
Jedinečné sbírkové předměty dokládají život v židovských ghettech a náboženských obcích, rozvoj kultury a vzdělanosti v období osvícenství a také pohnuté dějiny dvacátého století.
Proslulý Starý židovský hřbitov patří rovněž do prohlídkového okruhu Židovského muzea v Praze.
