What's the Deal? E W Marland's Oil, Money, and Legacy
This is the documentary we entered in state competition for National History Day 2015. Research began in November (2014) and ended in May (2015). We interviewed Jayne Detten from the Marland Grand Home, David Keathley from the Marland Mansion, and Frank Berry, who was our district judge for the competition and also an E.W. Marland expert.
The theme for our documentary was Leadership and Legacy, so that was what we mainly focused on here.
Enjoy!
Gender and the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show
Laura Arata, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of History, Oklahoma State University.
“Whitewashing and White Hats: Creating the American Cowboy”
Men who worked with cattle had existed for hundreds of years before artists like Charles Russell and showmen like William Frederick Cody popularized the idea of the “cowboy” in the late 19th century. Drawing on heroic ideals, popular imagery of the cowboy quickly transformed the occupation from one of hard, dirty labor often performed by racial minorities to a romanticized ideal. Within just a few decades, cowboys became a distinctly American version of knights in shining armor, rescuing communities and damsels in distress at least as often as wayward cattle. By the time Hollywood gave cowboys white hats to distinguish the good guys for silent film audiences in the early 20th century, popular lore had been so thoroughly whitewashed that it seemed cowboys had always been white, masculine, romantic heroes.
Johanna Blume, M.A. Associate Curator of Western Art, Eiteljorg Museum.
“Lilian Smith and the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show”
Lillian Smith performed as a sharpshooter with the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show under the pseudonym Princess Wenona. Like other women performers in Wild West Shows, Smith had to navigate complex social and cultural expectations of femininity, in a traditionally masculine sphere. Her experiences in the public eye were further complicated by the Native identity she adopted as part of her stage persona.
Tracey Hanshew, Ph.D. Clinical Assistant Professor of History, Washington State University.
“Wear a Bigger Bow: Working Cowgirls Accentuating Femininity in their Masculine Work”
The dime novel image of hyper-masculine men of the 19th century American West lured Anglo-Americans into territories poised to have opportunities for one to reclaim manhood. Yet on ranches where labor assignments were nongender specific, men’s work was taken up by capable women. A regional hegemonic femininity was created in the image of the cowgirl who juxtaposed her masculine occupation with feminine costume to place women in this unique role into the public arena.

Oklahoma Diabetes Prevention Program
Working with partners around the state, the Oklahoma State Department of Health put together a series of videos highlighting the importance of early detection and participating in a diabetes prevention program.
The video tells the story of three participants in the program who experienced positive life changes on their journey to a healthier lifestyle. The participants speak about how the program helped them understand what it means to eat better, move more, be tobacco free and reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. They shared how the program not only improves their health numbers, but those of their family and friends.
Participants in the National Diabetes Prevention Program in Oklahoma have an average weight loss exceeding the percentage recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
This program coaches participants about healthy eating and drinking, as well as increasing physical activity. Participants work together with a lifestyle coach to achieve their goals. Participants are encouraged to explore new and exciting ways to increase their activity level and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
For those at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, the American Medical Association recommends an intervention such as the National Diabetes Prevention Program. Participants in this program have reduced their risk for developing Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. Currently, there are 16 diabetes prevention programs in Oklahoma.
How do you know if you may be at risk of developing prediabetes? Risk assessment screening tests are available on the American Diabetes Association website, the CDC website as well as the OSDH website. These sites also contain additional information on reducing your risks of developing Type 2 Diabetes. If you find you are at risk of developing prediabetes, contact your health care provider and have them test your A1C levels.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Omaha ( OH-mə-hah) is the largest city in the state of Nebraska and the county seat of Douglas County. Omaha is located in the Midwestern United States on the Missouri River, about 10 miles (15 km) north of the mouth of the Platte River. Omaha is the anchor of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area, which includes Council Bluffs, Iowa, across the Missouri River from Omaha. According to the 2010 census, Omaha's population was 408,958, having increased to 466,893 as of the 2017 estimate. This makes Omaha the nation's 40th-largest city. Including its suburbs, Omaha formed the 60th-largest metropolitan area in the United States in 2013, with an estimated population of 895,151 residing in eight counties. The Omaha-Council Bluffs-Fremont, Nebraska-IA Combined Statistical Area is 931,667, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2013 estimate. Nearly 1.3 million people reside within the Greater Omaha area, comprising a 50 miles (80 kilometers) radius of Downtown Omaha, the city's center.
Omaha's pioneer period began in 1854, when the city was founded by speculators from neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa. The city was founded along the Missouri River, and a crossing called Lone Tree Ferry earned the city its nickname, the Gateway to the West. Omaha introduced this new West to the world in 1898, when it played host to the World's Fair, dubbed the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. During the 19th century, Omaha's central location in the United States spurred the city to become an important national transportation hub. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, the transportation and jobbing sectors were important in the city, along with its railroads and breweries. In the 20th century, the Omaha Stockyards, once the world's largest, and its meatpacking plants gained international prominence.
Today, Omaha is the home to the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies: mega-conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway; one of the world's largest construction companies, Kiewit Corporation; insurance and financial firm Mutual of Omaha; and the United States' largest railroad operator, Union Pacific Corporation. Berkshire Hathaway is headed by local investor Warren Buffett, one of the richest people in the world, according to a decade's worth of Forbes Magazine rankings, some of which have ranked him as high as No. 1. Omaha is also the home to five Fortune 1000 headquarters: Green Plains Renewable Energy, TD Ameritrade, Valmont Industries, Werner Enterprises, and West Corporation. Also headquartered in Omaha are First National Bank of Omaha, the largest privately held bank in the United States; three of the nation's largest 10 architecture/engineering firms: DLR Group, HDR, Inc., and Leo A Daly; the Gallup Organization, of Gallup Poll fame; and its riverfront Gallup University. Enron began in Omaha as Northern Natural Gas in 1930, before taking over a smaller Houston company in 1985 to form InterNorth, which Kenneth Lay moved permanently to Houston, in 1987. First Data, another Fortune 500 company, was founded in Omaha in 1971 and headquartered there until the late 90's. ConAgra Brand ...
