Pioneertown was built as a live-in Old West motion-picture set, built in the 1940s. It was made to provide a place for the actors to live while using their homes in the movie. Which sounds like either a ton of fun or a really awful day at work. Not finding much more information on the internet we decided to take a little road trip and figure out what the deal was. WE FAILED BIG TIME. On the weekends this place looks like a ton of fun. It's super rustic and authentic feeling but on a Monday in July.... Ghost town.... which was actually pretty fun. Hopefully this video will help others plan their trip to Pioneertown (seriously, its worth the drive) and give a little more exposure to something really cool to do outside of LA.

Pioneer Town California
The town started as a live-in Old West motion picture set, built in the 1940s. The movie set was designed to provide a place for the actors to live, and at the same time to have their homes used as part of the movie set.[1] A number of Westerns and early television shows were filmed in Pioneertown, including The Cisco Kid and Edgar Buchanan's Judge Roy Bean. Roy Rogers, Dick Curtis, and Russell Hayden were among the original developers and investors, and Gene Autry frequently taped his show at the six-lane Pioneer Bowl bowling alley. Its construction was credited to one A.E. Thompson in 1947 and Rogers himself rolled out the first ball in 1949. School-age children were hired as pinsetters until the installation of automatic pinsetting equipment in the 1950s. According to the Morongo Basin Historical Society, the bowling alley is one of the oldest in continuous use in California.

Usa California Joshua Tree National Park Campsites
The closest National Park Unit to Los Angeles, Joshua Tree is known as one of the world’s best rock climbing areas, but the desert hiking is fantastic, too. Straddling the transition zone between high and low deserts, trails here climb up prominent peaks, meander through cactus gardens, reach hidden oases, and wander near the ruins of ghost towns. Fantastic stargazing and wilderness camping make this park a must-visit in the cooler months.

Visit Pioneertown With Me
Visit Pioneertown with me, a living old-west frontier town in the Mojave Desert.
Tour the film sets for hundreds of Old Westerns on Mane Street in Pioneertown.
Visit a remote grove of old growth Joshua Trees, and watch the spectacular Mojave Desert sunset across the jagged Sawtooth mountain range. Truly a perfect day in California’s high desert.
Pioneertown With Me: Where the Old West is alive and drinking
What makes Pioneertown different than most other Mojave Desert ghost towns is that it’s full of people. Originally built as filming studios and outdoor sets the buildings were intended to be lived in, and enjoyed for the old frontier desert atmosphere as much as for filming Old Western movies and television shows.
Actor Dick Curtis began developing Pioneertown along with Roy Rogers, Russell Hayden and Gene Autrey in 1946 as an 1880s themed live-in Old West motion-picture set. Sound stages and outdoor filming sets centered around “Mane Street” were the filming locations for hundreds of Westerns and Tv shows. The Cisco Kid, Annie Oakley, and the Gene Autrey show were just a few.
#Pioneertown
As Social media and the world at large has discovered Pioneertown the rustic shop fronts of Mane Street are all occupied and the local roadhouse music venue Pappy and Harriets has a wait list of 2-3 hours for a table on any given night. And yes I have waited 3 hours for a table before.
Pappy and Harriets is well worth the drive up from the low desert for dinner and dancing to live music. Make sure to get a reservation because they book out weeks in advance. I would love to photograph Pappy’s but it’s very dark and full of people so I’m uncomfortable taking photos of people in such close proximity. The irony is that a contingent of those people would beg to be photographed by anyone for any reason. #LookAtMe
Pioneertown is located in the Mojave Desert in Southern California 20 minutes West of Joshua Tree, 2 and a half hours from Los Angeles, and 40 minutes North of Palm Springs. The area of Pioneertown and the surrounding communities of Pipes Canyon, Rimrock, and Gamma Gulch are in a high altitude desert valley that sees 4 seasons and regular snowfall every winter.
Joshua Tree Grove
The high altitude Mojave Desert is green and lush just as the low desert is heating up, and the crisp breeze is cool and refreshing. A Hawk circles above and the Mojave buzzes with life as the late afternoon sun warms the land.
On the horizon you can see the land begin to regenerate after being ravaged by wildfire several years ago. This year, there is a cast of orange wildflowers as what was once forest is now dry grass and scrub lands. All over the western United States, land is regenerating after wildfire. Unfortunately in the Mojave the most important plant for the ecosystem as a food source, the Pinon or Pine Nut tree is unable to regenerate after fire.
Joshua Trees beckon in every direction with their spiky arms stretched outwards towards the heavens. Despite the intense climate that features freezing ice, snow and searing heat, this grove of Joshua Trees is thriving and have so far escaped wildfire.
Just being near the Joshua Trees gives me a feeling of peace, and they are spectacular company on this beautiful Mojave afternoon.
Sawtooth Sunset
The Sawtooth mountains get their name from the jagged horizon line its rocky peaks form. When the sun sets in Pipes Canyon, all of the Mojave granite that the mountains and land are made from turns beautiful pinks, oranges, and golds.
Today I’m capturing this sunset to be enjoyed as a time-lapse video. Time-lapse videos are my new favorite way to appreciate the natural beauty and distill the essence of that experience to be enjoyed again. Every sunset is unique and we all have a finite amount of sunsets we will experience. Setting up to film in the ideal location, and letting the camera roll causes us to intentionally slow down and just sit and watch the sunset. It’s been a beautiful day in the Mojave, thank you for joining me today in Pioneertown, California.

insiders guide - Pioneertown: From Film Set to Artist Haven
Pioneertown was originally built as a stage for film – almost 200 Westerns have been filmed there! Today, it is a historical landmark for Western movie buffs and one of the largest protected natural areas in America. Many famous bands frequently stop in Pioneertown to play a small concert as part of their tour, so the city also attracts an interesting mix of music and film fans. Campers, bikers, photographers, models, artists, and actors also frequent Pioneertown.
As Gene Buckelew, owner of the bar-restaurant “Pappy & Harriet's” says in this video: People come here for all kinds reasons, good or bad. Some hide from the law, others find their inspiration. If you listen to the desert, it will speak to you. You either get the desert or you don’t.
*Insider's Guide is a new series of short documentaries produced by U.S. EMBASSY ATHENS, offering an insight to the Western United States. These videos show the entrepreneurial energy, public-private sector cooperation, and community involvement at unique destinations throughout the American west.
