Focus of Something Bruin Could Shift to Office
YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. Continuing coverage on a major poaching bust in the mountains. News 13 has new information that could turn the tables on the undercover officers.
As News 13 first reported Monday night, a federal jury determined the first three men on trial were not guilty of any felony charges. News 13's investigative reporter, Mike Mason, first exposed how wildlife officers were the ones who illegally killed some bears and charged the hunters instead. Now Mike has learned the officers could soon be the ones in the hot seat, accused of breaking laws to make their case.
WLOS has learned a defense attorney will be testifying before the North Carolina State Senate next month to explain why he feels the wildlife officers entrapped hunters in this case. In February of 2013, this case was first touted as a huge success, costing taxpayers millions. But now some question who should really be paying the price. Brock Parker tells us, I was happy, I mean I wasn't really surprised because I didn't feel that there was evidence to support any of these accusations in the first place. Parker and other hunters now question why they were even charged during Operation Something Bruin, a 4-year, multi-million dollar investigation that was designed to prosecute poachers who killed black bears illegally in Northern Georgia and North Carolina. The 3 hunters spent five days in Ashevilles Federal Courthouse, facing federal felony charges for conspiring to transport a bear killed illegallly across state lines. A News 13 investigation in May of this year found North Carolina wildlife officer Chad Arnold killed two bears and a Georgia officer shot two others. Defense attorney Russ McLean says, they should protect and serve the wildlife and not kill wildlife in an attempt to convict somebody.
Jurors found the three accused poachers not guilty of any felony charges. This first federal trial focused on those two black bears Arnold killed back in 2011. Jerry Parker is one of the defendants and feels the officers, should have to go to court and defend themselves for killing the bears illegally.
News 13 found Arnold killed one bear in Georgia while he was alone in the woods and another undersized cub in North Carolina, which is illegal. United States Forest Service Agent Brian Southard is seen in a photo posing with that dead cub. During the trial, Southard testified he gave Arnold permission to kill bears in order to make cases against the hunters. News 13's Mike Mason confronted both of them about this. When Southard was asked if he would be willing to talk to News 13 at any point about the case he replied, no, I'm not allowed to do that. When North Carolina wildlife officer Chad Arnold was asked the same question he replied, no comment whatsoever, but have a nice day.
After killing the bear in Georgia, Arnold asked the hunters to help load it into a truck. The jury found two men guilty of misdemeanors for essentially helping Arnold load up the bear, but during trial there was no proof presented showing the hunters knew Arnold planned to drive the bear to North Carolina.
Allyn Stockton represents one of the defendant and says he was relieved by the jurors verdict stating
