A 64 & K 88 - 45 Years of The Plains Railway (HD)
During Labour Weekend 2016, The Plains Railway in Tinwald, Ashburton celebrated its 45th anniversary since a bunch of rail enthusiasts formed the Ashburton Railway & Preservation Society in 1971, with an ambition to save a 2.5 km section of the ex - Mt Somers Branch line. To celebrate this important milestone in the railway's history, a special running day during Labour weekend was held on Sunday 23rd October which saw two of the railway's Victorian era locomotives, Dubs A class no. 64 & Rodgers K class no. 88 in action. Hillside Ja class no. 1260 was planned to be in operation for this special event however due for unforeseen circumstances this wasn't possible. Nevertheless, both engines took turns with the passenger duties throughout the day including a few double header runs. K 88 also saw a change in appearance in the afternoon when its smoke box number plate was exchange for the acorn nut which was used on this class of engine and many other NZR classes back in the day. Sit back and enjoy 1870's New Zealand steam in action on the Plains Railway, an appropriate tribute for its 45 years of existence!

The Plains Railway - Labour Weekend 2018 (JA 1260)
JA 1260, one of the restored steam locomotives housed at the Plains Railway, Ashburton, NZ pulls passengers during the labour weekend open day.
Ja 1260 was built at Hillside Railway Workshops, Dunedin for the New Zealand Government Railways in 1952. Ja' 1260 spent the majority of its working life based in Dunedin, working between Oamaru in the north, and Invercargill in the south. Ja 1260 was one of the last steam locomotives to withdrawn from Railways Department service, and has a claim to fame as the last steam locomotive to haul a night express out of Dunedin in 1971. It was also the last steam locomotive in service to haul passenger trains out of Christchurch. After its withdrawal Ja 1260 was acquired by The Plains Railway and was towed to Ashburton in April 1972 and stored there until February 1973 when it was towed to The Plains Railway Museums precinct.

American Style - K 88 Washington at the Plains Railway (HD)
Steam locomotive K 88 Washington is seen operating another regular steam open day at the Plains Railway in Tinwald south of Ashburton. The 1878 American built Rogers K class was dumped in the Oreti River in Southland after withdrawn from service in 1926. It was rescued by The Plains Railway many years later and they restored the rusting hulk to a fully operational steam locomotive. K 88 is the railway's main operating locomotive and as seen doing what it used to do many years ago on the 2.5km long railway, enjoy!
