Beijing is not really the sort of city you arrive and you fall in love with right away.

Beijing can at first seemed ugly, but once you get to know the city, get to know the people, and get to see the hutongs and the mountains around it, it's a very beautiful city.

So I like to stay in the hutongs and around where I live. It's pretty much I live in a small village within the city. You get to know all your neighbours very well. It's very quiet, and it's a pretty interesting place. It's a bit like living in a museum.

Inspiration in Beijing for me is pretty much everywhere. It could be anything from a very kitsch restaurant sign, to maybe an illegal sticker that stuck on the wall you know claiming to buy and sell second-hand pharmaceuticals, or it could even be a subway ticket.

16. SOUNDBITE :(English) Dominic Johnson-Hill, owner of Plastered T-shirt shop:
You know I've chosen to live in Beijing. I am not an expat, I haven't been sent here. So I am very active, and I am very aware that I should be a part of the community and live here.

I think he is somewhat special. Why did he choose to live in the courtyard house, you know? He moved in because one of his friends had the house for rent back then. When later we chatted with him, he said he likes the courtyard house and likes to be among us, and he doesn't like to live in those apartment buildings.

So people are looking for something fun and new and cool about China. Everybody has seen a Chairman Mao t-shirt, and it's getting a little bit boring. As is the Communist chic is getting a little bit boring. So people are looking for something new, fun and exciting. And I'd like to think that what they see in the brand

Creative plastered on-The story of a British Hutonger
From opening a small T-shirt store in a Hutong in Beijing to becoming the man behind a brand with a cult following in the city, Dominic Johnson Hill has enjoyed a rather eventful two decades in the Chinese capital.
“One day I was walking down the old Hutong and saw a tourist wearing a very ugly T-shirt reading ‘I climbed the Great Wall,’” recalls Hill. And that was how he conceived of the idea for Plastered8 – a designer T-shirt store located on Nanluoguxiang (South Luogu Lane).
