In The Yucatan: Independencia 2011
To truly experience what it means to be Mexican, or Yucatecan, you have to live here and celebrate with the locals the way they have done for years and years. This was the first time that we ventured into the Plaza Grande for Independencia...me, having lived here for 2 years and Bryce only a few months...this is what we captured...

Cozumel México is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula opposite Playa del Carmen.
Cozumel is one of the ten municipalities of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.
Tourism, diving and charter fishing comprise the majority of the island’s economy.
Cruise ships often visit the island. A few can dock virtually downtown. A larger pair of piers lies about two miles south of downtown San Miguel, and primarily serves Carnival and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ships.

Yucatán Roadtrip - Cenote, Chichén Itzá and the world's first all included hostel!
My friend were leaving for 9 days to road-trip around the Yucatán peninsula.
I decided to buy a ticket one week before their trip and to join them for 4 days. Barely slept but had a whole lot of fun. Trips don't have to be weeks or months long to be worth it.
As a budget backpacker I will confess it is very expensive to only leave for such a short period of time and the lowest price for the airplane ticket was FAR from what I would call a deal.
Was definitely worth it anyway.
Trip :
Day 1 : Walking tour around Mérida, the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán, it has a rich Mayan and colonial heritage. The city’s focal point is Plaza de la Independencia, bordered by the fortresslike Mérida Cathedral and white limestone Iglesia de la Tercera Orden, both colonial-era churches built using relics from ancient Mayan temples. The Casa de Montejo, a 16th-century mansion, is a landmark of colonial plateresque architecture. We spent the afternoon at a Cenote that is off the beaten tracks - only a few locals were there to enjoy the fresh water with us. We spent the whole night enjoying the city's night-life.
Day 2: Relaxed at the hostel in the morning and spent the late afternoon at Chichén Itzá, Yucatan, Mexico - we arrived when most tourists are starting to leave. By the end there were very few of us left! It's all about timing
Day 3: All included hostel (great mix) and day at the beach with a bunch of friends we made
Day 4: Dos Ojos Cenote - Historic caves & crystal clear natural swimming holes popular for snorkeling & scuba diving.
7 Days in Mexico in 7 Minutes (2019)
We love traveling. So for this week, we are sharing one of our latest trips. This is 7 Days in Mexico in 7 Minutes. More information about all the places we visited can be found below.
Some of the places we visited this time around and as seen in the video are:
1) Cancun Airport (CUN): this is where we landed. CUN is a hub for those visiting the state of Quintana Roo in the Yucatán Peninsula and surrounding islands such as Cozumel. The flight prices to CUN are always great, making this destination an easy one for people in all budget ranges. For example, as our family has grown, we knew that we wanted to minimize any unnecessary financial expenses and so we decided on a vacation spot partly based on cost and convenience. So we took a direct flight to CUN from CVG (Cincinnati). We are extremely financially conscious, and we’ll discuss how we manage to live on a tight budget while still investing in experiences and things that matter.
2) Playa del Carmen: we made this second trip to Mexico primarily because we wanted to spend more time in Playa del Carmen (or as is sometimes called Playcar). Last time we were in MX, we ran out of time. To say the least, Playa del Carmen is a must visit. It’s only about an hour or less away from Cancun. Rent a car, or get a taxi and stand in Playcar for a few days. With our family size, we rely on Airbnb to rent entire houses when we travel so that we are free to cook for our kids and care for them (and continue to be financially conscious). The place we stayed this time around was 1 minute from the beach, and a few seconds from Calle Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue). 5th Avenue is a must-see in Playa del Carmen.
3) Parque Leona Vicario: named after a prominent figure of Mexican’s War of Independence, this small little park located in Playa del Carme is just amazing. You will find more locals here than tourists, and the street food is beyond words. The vibe after sunset until late night hours is just so amazing. And you can walk to the beach after you are done!
4) Chichen Itza: we drove 2 hours to Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen. Chichen Itza is a historic and archeological wonder. Please go. Arrive closer to sunset or on a cloudy day so that you can actually enjoy the 2-3 hours of experiencing this site.
5) Cancun: this is the hot spot, the tourist hub. If you have never experienced “Mexico”, start here. Most tourists stay in the Hotel Zone. Depending on what time of the year, you will find certain areas of the hotel zone packed with college kids trying to have a good time (think Spring Break). But definitely spend time in the Hotel Zone, and the price you pay for a good hotel and/or resort is worth it, especially if you have kids. I have never been a fan of “all-inclusive experiences because I like freedom to eat and explore an entire city than just being stuck in one resort. But that’s all up to you and your taste.
6) Parque de las Palapas: located in Cancun, this place is one of the best places to find locals hanging out with their families and having a great meal. The food is beyond words. We love traveling in order to experience local culture and not just another re-created American/European experience in a foreign country. So if that is you, drive 10 mins from Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone, Cancun) and come spend an evening. This is also a great place to bring kids.
7) La Isla Shopping Center: This place is located in the Hotel Zone and is a great place to visit, or end your evening. To say goodbye to Cancun, we went and had a meal at one of our favorite restaurants called Taco Grill. They also have a really good European café with awesome coffee and crepe.
8) Places that we didn't go this time around that you should definitely check out are Cozumel (awesome island) and Tulum.
Lastly, traveling as a young black couple with a family comes with some interesting experiences (good and not so great ones). We will share more in future videos.
Thank you for watching and reading this far.
