MEXICO: ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE IN HONOUR OF THE VIRGIN OF GUADALUPE
Spanish/Nat
Mexicans are celebrating the annual pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin of Guadalupe ... their patron saint.
Thousands of Mexicans gathered at the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City for the traditional festivities.
The most ardent believers walked and crawled on their knees from their towns and villages to pay homage to the Virgin Mary.
From Tijuana to Chiapas, there are celebrations across Mexico this week.
Thousands of devotees gathered in the capital, Mexico City, to mark the annual pilgrimage in honour of their patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Street vendors took the opportunity to sell a wide range of religious paraphernalia including candles and pictures of the Virgin.
People wearing traditional colonial costumes played instruments and danced in the midday sun.
Mexicans celebrate the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe every 12th of December.
The Virgin was said to have appeared to an Indian peasant- called Juan Diego- in December of 1531, asking for a church to be built on the site where the Basilica is now located.
Hundreds of thousands are expected to make pilgrimages from all over the country.
The celebrations also draw devotees from other countries.
The most ardent crawled on their knees to the Basilica- mainly to fulfill a promise in exchange for a special favour from the saint.
Others just come for the chance to take a glance at the famous portrait of the Guadalupe.
SOUNDBITE: (In Spanish)
At first I came to pay a promise. Today I just come to visit the Virgin...all the way from Puebla. (Q: How long have you been walking for?)...Since Saturday at 8:00 in the morning.
SUPER CAPTION: Devotee
According to local beliefs the Virgin Mary emblazoned her likeness on Juan Diego's tunic and showered him with roses.
The picture on display at the Basilica is believed to be the original portrait that appeared on the peasant's tunic in 1531.
Traditionally, those who crawl on their knees get up in front of the picture where they pray and ask for special favours.
The Indian peasant- Juan Diego- was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1990.
Some people dress in peasant garments to honour the only man who saw the Virgin Mary in Mexico.
Several masses are held throughout the day to accommodate the large number of people who travel each year to honour their patroness.
This year's festivities are even more special. The Church is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the crowning of the Virgin of Guadalupe as Empress of the Americas.
And in a country plagued by economic, political and social problems, devotees hope their patron saint will give them strength to overcome their difficulties.

STORYLINE:
Roman Catholic faithful gathered in Mexican churches before dawn on Wednesday with lit candles, bowed heads and words of hope for the ailing Pope John Paul II.
Many attended Mass at Mexico City's Basilica of Guadalupe on the day of Candelaria, a Catholic commemoration of the presentation of the baby Jesus at the temple in Jerusalem.
The Candelaria is widely celebrated in Mexico, where Catholics clothe icons of the baby Jesus and, according to tradition, eat the traditional Mexican dish, tamales.
The Vatican said on Wednesday the 84-year-old pontiff was rushed to Rome's Gemelli Polyclinic on Tuesday night with breathing trouble, and was to spend several more days at the clinic to recover from the flu.
The Basilica of Guadalupe, named for Mexico's patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe, remained open during the night in northern Mexico City for anyone who wished to offer prayers.
It was here, in 2002, that the pope canonised Indian saint Juan Diego during the pontiff's fifth visit to the country.
The Mexican people's adoration of the pope is also reflected in a statue of John Paul II that stands next to the central Cathedral in the capital's vast main plaza, known as the zocalo.
Mexico's Cathedral is the home church of Mexico City Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, who has been mentioned as a possible successor to the pope.
Rivera was holding private meetings on Wednesday and did not plan to make any public appearances, according to a spokesman.
The Vatican's ambassador to Mexico, Giuseppe Bertello, who offered a Mass for the Candelaria at a parish in Mexico City, said he wanted to thank the Mexican people for their support of the Pope.
John Paul, the first pope to visit Mexico, is enormously popular in a country where 88 per cent of the country's 100 (m) million people are at least nominally Catholic.
As many as 20 (m) million people were believed to have turned out to see the pope during his first visit, in 1979, just a year after his papacy began.

The Sacred Plants in the Americas conference was held on February 23, 24, and 25, 2018 in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. The conference had the purpose of building a bridge between indigenous and traditional psychoactive practices, psychedelic science, and drug policy through multidisciplinary and intercultural dialogue. In a context in which drug policy reforms are temporary, we consider it relevant to build spaces for discussion about psychoactive species and their growing multiplicity of uses. Moreover, it also sought to give voice to the indigenous people, who have been knowledgeable about psychoactive plants since ancient times, and they will be providing lectures at the conference.
