California Coast: Exquisite. Unprotected.
About 1,100 miles of offshore rocks and islands on the California coastline are currently designated as a national monument. The vast majority of this area is inaccessible--only to be viewed through binoculars.
We now have the opportunity to add 6,200 acres to California Coastal National Monument, providing lasting protections to some of the California coast’s most exquisite—and unprotected—coastal gems, from the elephant seal rookery and historic lighthouse of Piedras Blancas to the lush redwoods and rolling grasslands of the Cotoni-Coast Dairies in Santa Cruz.

Photographer's powerful images of Calif. coast get national attention
Bob Wick's photos do more than describe the most recent addition to the California Coastal National Monument -- they take you there. As an amateur photographer, Wick's images propelled a two-year grassroots campaign to protect the rugged stretch of the Mendocino County Coastline. President Barack Obama designated the area a national monument this week. Bill Whitaker reports.

Castle Mountains National Monument
The Castle Mountains National Monument encompasses 20,920 acres of crucial wildlife habitat. “The monument will serve as a critical connection between two mountain ranges, protecting water resources, plants, and wildlife such as golden eagles, bighorn sheep, mountain lions and bobcats.” Noted the White House.
In addition, the Castle Mountains National Monument preserves many Native American archeological sites in the Mojave Desert and the remnants of the historical ghost town Hart, which was a fleeting gold mining town in the early 20th century. “The area has also been identified as an ideal reintroduction site for pronghorn antelope, the second-fastest land mammal on earth.” Said the Wilderness Society. Obama Just Created The World's Largest Marine Reserve
U.S. President Barack Obama took a historic step on Thursday by dramatically expanding an area of the Pacific Ocean that is off limits to fishing and other marine resources development, such as deep-sea mining. By adding to the existing Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, which was established under former U.S. President George W. Bush in 2009, Obama is expanding it to six times its existing size. This protects an additional 490,000 square miles of ocean waters in and around tropical islands and atolls, including Wake Island, Johnson Atoll, Jarvis Island and others in the south-central Pacific Ocean, one of the most pristine ocean environments under U.S. control.

Stepping on Prayers: An American Monument
After President Obama established the Bears Ears National Monument on December 28, 2016, a robust debate about the size and scope of the monument has captured the attention of the nation. With interest groups spending money to influence the debate from out of state there is a need for someone to represent the local residents. Stepping on Prayers is an effort to amplify those voices through storytelling and beautiful imagery.

Local Voices:
The Navajo people, and the Ute people have always known about Bears Ears. They said, 'Bears Ears is sacred to us.' We [the locals] understand that. We respect it. We recognize it. We believe it. And we're OK with it. — Bruce Adams, San Juan County Commissioner
Any time you get a new monument or park, it draws the tourists. I'm happy to have the tourists because I own an RV park. But, on the other hand, I'm sad that we may lose our privileges to go freely through this country where we'd like to. — Jim Brandt, Monticello Resident
The community feels like this was done to us, not with us. — Jami Bayles, President of Stewards of San Juan County
Please don't put holes in my graveyard. Please don't climb over the trees that I utilize... We don't want somebody else coming in from a different area stepping on our prayers. — Anna Tom, Diné
