While touring around France we stopped at the capital of the Green Venice area - Coulon, the same day as the Tour du Poitou Charentes rode through town. We photographed the riders, but filmed the sheer number of cars following loaded with bikes. For more details and photos of our tour of Europe in a motorhome please visit our website OurTour.co.uk.
Exploring France - Citadel Brouage
#TravelEurope #Citadel #NewAquitaine #CitadelDeBrouage #France
Founded in 1555 by Jacques de Pons on a ballast deposit, Jacopolis Sur Brouage was initially specialized in the salt trade. It soon took on strategic importance and turned into a bone of contention between Catholics and Protestants. In 1627, Cardinal Richelieu became its governor and ordered his favorite architect, Pierre d'Argencout, to fortify the town, which was then transformed into a genuine bastion. Following his death, Brouage declined; in 1685, Vauban intervened and narrowed down the dimensions of the fortifications. Used during the French Revolution as a prison town, Brouage fell into a deep slumber, as though the sea had forgotten its existence in the heart of the marshland. Its reputation is also due to figures such as Samuel Champlain; born in Brouage around 1570, he founded the city of Quebec.

Bayonne, an urban gem in the French Way of St. James
Bayonne is an urban gem located on the shores of the Bay of Basque, close to the Pyrenees in the French Basque Country.
It is one of the largest cities of the region of Aquitaine and it's also one of the most beautiful, located at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers.
Bayonne Cathedral known as The Saint Mary's Cathedral is an elegant Gothic building, constructed in the 13th century and it was named one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, like a monument that integrates the French Way of St. James.
Another monument is the Old Castle in the city center. The Old Castle construction began in the 11th century on the location of the Roman castrum and was finally finished six centuries later.
The medieval layout in it's narrow streets is appreciated. A lovely detail is that we can't see in the building's front a single cable.
This city with more than a quarter of a million inhabitants is a neat and charming French city.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Occitan (English: ; Occitan: [utsiˈta]; French: [ɔksitɑ̃]), also known as lenga d'òc (Occitan: [ˈleŋɡɔ ˈðɔ(k)] (listen); French: langue d'oc) by its native speakers, is a Romance language. It is spoken in southern France, Italy's Occitan Valleys, Monaco, and Spain's Val d'Aran; collectively, these regions are sometimes referred to as Occitania. Occitan is also spoken in the linguistic enclave of Guardia Piemontese (Calabria, Italy). However, there is controversy about the unity of the language, as some think that Occitan is a macrolanguage. Others include Catalan in this family, as the distance between this language and some Occitan dialects (such as the Gascon language) is similar to the distance among different Occitan dialects. In fact, Catalan was considered an Occitan dialect until the end of the 19th century.Today, Occitan is an official language in Catalonia, where a subdialect of Gascon known as Aranese is spoken in the Val d'Aran. Occitan's closest relative is Catalan. Since September 2010, the Parliament of Catalonia has considered Aranese Occitan to be the officially preferred language for use in the Val d'Aran.
Across history, the terms Limousin (Lemosin), Languedocien (Lengadocian), Gascon, and later Provençal (Provençal, Provençau or Prouvençau) have been used as synonyms for the whole of Occitan; nowadays, Provençal is understood mainly as the Occitan dialect spoken in Provence, in southeast France.Unlike other Romance languages such as French or Spanish, there is no single written standard language called Occitan, and Occitan has no official status in France, home to most of Occitania. Instead, there are competing norms for writing Occitan, some of which attempt to be pan-dialectal, whereas others are based on particular dialects. These efforts are hindered by the rapidly declining use of Occitan as a spoken language in much of southern France, as well as by the significant differences in phonology and vocabulary among different Occitan dialects.
In particular, the northern and easternmost dialects have more morphological and phonetic features in common with the Gallo-Italic and Oïl languages (e.g. nasal vowels; loss of final consonants; initial cha/ja- instead of ca/ga-; uvular ⟨r⟩; the front-rounded sound /ø/ instead of a diphthong, /w/ instead of /l/ before a consonant), whereas the southernmost dialects have more features in common with the Ibero-Romance languages (e.g. betacism; voiced fricatives between vowels in place of voiced stops; -ch- in place of -it-), and Gascon has a number of unusual features not seen in other dialects (e.g. /h/ in place of /f/; loss of /n/ between vowels; intervocalic -r- and final -t/ch in place of medieval -ll-). There are also significant lexical differences, where some dialects have words cognate with French, and others have Catalan and Spanish cognates (maison/casa house, testa/cap head, ...
