Aerial footage of upper Rio Grande bamboo River Rafting, Jamaica
In this video we go bamboo River Rafting on Rio Grande.
River Rafting:
As much as it is very uneventful, it is super fun. The guide/captain will take you down the river making it look super easy while you are relaxing and taking in the nature. Then he will offer you (Tom Sawyer style) to try piloting the raft. It is quite challenging, but a great deal of fun.
Getting there:
Located near Port Antonio, Portland Parish. As you are driving on A4 and you pass over the river you will see the rafts under the bridge and quite a few Raft Captains will wave you down. When I say Captains, I mean it. They have the license to operate the raft granted by the government. From there you will have two options, the shorter and the longer route. We have done both and the longer 4 hr one is well worth the time and money. Watch the video for shorter run here: Once you are there you can arrange transportation to the start of the route with the guides for a very reasonable price.
Price: Well...it is, as with most things in Jamaica, negotiable. But be prepared to pay $60 US per raft for the shorter 2 hr run, and $80 US for the 4 hr one.

They will let you park your vehicle in nearby village, Snow Hill, and take you to the river via their truck.

Sailing JAMAICA (Port Antonio)
We have sailed to a different country! It's totally different than hopping on a plane and walking out of it in about an hour.
Think of it as cooking a meal in a slow cooker ... it takes a long time, but boy, doesn't it taste so much better?
Sailing to Jamaica wasn't a plan, the Dominican republic and Eastern Caribbean was. But the night before getting our clearance to leave the Bahamas, we made a decision to follow the wind instead of fighting it.
On the last day, some local kids stole our dighy, ran it into the rocks and damaged the engine propeller. The locals advised us to get the Police involved and unfortunatelly it turned into a bad drama, making our departure quite bitter.
The 48 hours passage to Jamaica was beautiful but challenging, as always. Lots of things broke, as always ????
But the moment my tired brain realized the weird clouds in the distance are indeed the mountains of Jamaica, all of my exhaustion was gone, replaced by joy so rich, you could slice it.
Port Antonio was our favorite place in Jamaica. The mountains, the colours, a bit forgotten by the tourists. Which makes the streets full of people hustling to make a living.
It was quite a shock after spending lots of alone time on the deserted Bahamian islands. We felt safe, though annoyed by the perpetual attention to be sold something. Sometimes, walking by the road, we couldn't have a conversation due to the constant interruption of taxi drivers. It felt like being a lonely antelope on the savana filled with predators ???? But we loved that place, anyway.
We explored an abandoned hotel resort and took a bus to the Jon Crow mountains, to check the pretty Reach Waterfalls.
After seeing the abundance of sea life in the Bahamas, it was really sad to witness the overfished coral reefs in Jamaica. We've heard the authorities have taken some action and fish sanctuaries and protected areas prohibited from fishing were created. Of course, overfishing isn't the only evil in this story, but every action taken is a step forward.
Soooo, here'a a little video of little stuff we filmed ???? ✌
