Hiking Around Sintra | Rediscovering Portugal
A small adventure to the Reserva Natural de Cascais-Sintra in Portugal. We heard there was an awesome view, so we went looking for it.
And then went for a quick golden hour goodness on our way down. Guincho never disappoints.

this is not a diary, my memory sucks and my external hard drive is full. So, when I moved back to Lisbon, this happened.

Hiking in Romantic Sintra, Portugal ????????| Off the beaten track. Away from tourists.
One of my favourites summer activities is hiking around the mountains, and Sintra is a perfect place to do this. Just 40-minutes from Lisbon, this place might be known for its romantic palaces and castles, but it's also a wonderful place to go on hiking, with Serra da Sintra spreading across a 16-km range of hiking trails, surrounded by nature, mountainous landscape, and all those magical castles.
Follow me as I go on a day trip in Sintra, dodge tourists and traverse a quieter, off the beaten path along the mountain range, explore the lush forest, pick some blackberries, enjoy the summer air and talk about how important it is to connect to nature, whilst we can.

Short video to admire what the Sintra region has to offer: Beaches, Cliffs, unesco sites.... Photos and Planning info at:
A walk in Portugal - Sintra, Rota Vicentina (Historical Way & Fisherman’s Way) and Lisbon
An excellent walking adventure in Portugal, beginning in the fairytale land of Sintra, then walking 140km south on the inland Rota Vicentina (Historical Way), then 55km north on the coastal Fisherman’s Way, ending by exploring the neighborhoods of Lisbon.
Hiking Sintra
I hiked about 10 miles from Cabo da ROCA to Praia do Magoito on 6/17/2018. This video includes some of the highlights.

Portugal Sintra, A Fairy Tale Town
This is Sintra, a mysterious place in Portugal just outside of Lisbon
Links to the locations and more about the prices below ↓↓↓
As we have been traveling through Portugal the past few weeks, we decided to stop in Sintra, just half an hour away from Lisbon to shoot a video about Quinta da Regaleira, a very unique place in Europe.
We were in Sintra for nearly a week. The city seems very small on the map but if you want to see each castle and its surrounding gardens and walk through the city also, while having some time to breath and have a relaxed meal, making it all in a day is impossible.
Here is a link to the city's official travel site ( this is where we took most of our information)
EXPLORE...
Food:
What you need to try while in Portugal :
Bacalhau, which is a codfish dish with which the Portuguese are ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED!
Alheira de Mirandela, which is a sausage stuffed with bread and very cheap. Doesn’t sound like much, but give it a try, you’ll probably like it!
Pastel de nata, well what can I say, I am obsessed with pastries so this is a MUST. They have a lot more than this one, but if you’re not into sweets, please give this one a try *hint* it’s crunchy and creamy at the same time, so yeah, deliciooous!
As for places to eat, we heard that these one are really good (as I have mentioned earlier I was too full after eating too many pastries to try to stop for a full meal)
Curral dos Caprinos
AZENHAS DO MAR - this one has also a gorgeous view just by the ocean
Culture: How to act like a local
Hike, go to cafes and enjoy the gardens. Really the locals here really take advantage of the beautiful free gardens surrounding the castles.
Nightlife: When and where to go…
Yeah, about that… if you’re a city person I would say there is nothing here that qualifies as a real club so heading back to Lisbon seems worth it if you wanna party.
Nature: Wildlife, parks, and beaches
THIS IS THE PLACE FOR IT.
Sintra has both forest and beaches. The beach is gorgeous and relaxing, but you can find that outside of Sintra also. If you come here save your time for the gardens and the castles. Let yourself enjoy the royal palaces for a while, it is said to bring harmony into one's heart, why else would the royal family come here so often?
Transport:
There are three ways to move around: bus, tuk-tuk or walk. The bus is the cheapest but takes an incredible amount of time, so go for the tuk-tuk if you don’t feel like walking for hours. We really enjoyed the walk, but we had a lot of time on our hands.
Budget:
This is a very cheap place to visit, depending on your accommodation choices. Quinta da Regaleira is the cheapest one to visit and most fun because is more of an adult mystery house, but the others are equally beautiful just slightly pricier. With a minimum of 27 euros and a maximum of 120 euros, the accommodation really makes a difference. The season your are visiting can also play a big part in this, plan ahead- that always saves money! Purchasing tickets online saves you 5%.
ACTIVITIES AND SIGHTSEEING
Main attractions:
Castelo dos Mouros and garden
Palácio da Pena and Pena Palace gardens
Quinta da Regaleira (our favourite although not as popular)
Prices:
Return train fare €4.50
Palácio da Pena Full ticket €14.00
Palácio da Pena grounds only €7.50
Castelo dos Mouros €8.00
Quinta da Regaleira € 6.00
434 tourist bus €5.50 (single loop), 3.90 one way ticket.
Tuk-tuk €5.00. More than that and you are getting scammed.
Lunch in a tourist restaurant €12-€20

One of the top hikes in Portugal - Alamal
We love the outdoors, and of course, hiking is a family favourite. Alamal is listed as one of the best hiking experiences in Portugal and as a bonus, we have family there so this has been on our list for quite some time. We have been waiting for Lukas to be old enough to be able to finish it and this year we decided he could try. We have already completed a 6Km hike with him and it went well so we went for it.
The complete hike is circular and it's quite long with around 15Km with about half near the river, and we decided to make only the section that is along the river. We left one car in Belver and took another to the dam to start the hike.
The views are amazing and it's quite safe to make it with a child even though some parts have quite a lot of stairs, too big for a child so we had to take him, but for the most part, it's easy enough.
Near the end, you reach Alamal Beach a river beach where you can have a snack in the coffee or just relax and enjoy the view to Belver and it's castle. From Alamal to Belver you can find a wooden bridge that follows the river all the way to Belver's bridge and we believe that's the highlight of the hike, unfortunately, we could only experience the very beginning as the fires of last summer destroyed it. Of course, this meant we could not reach our car and we had to go up and down the mountain while taking our son in our arms.
It's a very relaxing hike and we would certainly recommend going there with some extra time to be able to visit Belver or even take a boat ride on the river, just don't make the same mistake and check if the wooden part is open.

Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is the full name of where we went today. And it was an absolute surprise how great this nature park turned out to be.
Because very few people go here. It's only an hour away from Lisbon and yet everyone drives right past it, which means you have it all to yourself.
And you won't be bored here. The vast nature alone is enough to come here with epic hiking trails and scenic landscape as far as the eye can see. And in addition to that, this is also where you can see actual dinosaur footprints, which was quite an unusual experience.
It was super fascinating to explore these original footprints and think about the crazy fact that they are more than 65 million years old.
In many ways this nature park is the real world Jurassic Park.

The longest day of our self-guided bike tour with Portugal Nature Trails also happened to be the most rainy day of the entire tour. Kevin had to stop at a small bike shop to have some work done on his tires, then we cycled for several hours in a pouring rain. Around lunchtime, however, the sun finally emerged and we made our way to Ericeira, Portugal where we checked into our hotel (the Villa Gale Ericeira Hotel) and ate a delicious vegetable curry at a local restaurant.

Cycling to Historic Sintra, Portugal - EP. #88
Learn to conduct your own bicycle touring adventures:
When we woke up in Ericeira, Portugal and looked outside our hotel window, we were fearful of the scene outside. It was absolutely beautiful, but it was pouring rain. Lucky for us, by the time we got on our bikes, the rain had stopped and we enjoyed a fast, but pleasant cycle to the nearby town of Sintra. Perched high on a hillside, historic Sintra, Portugal was bustling with tourists. Once in town, Kevin ran to a local bike shop to get some work done on his brakes, while I walked around town and climbed up to the Moorish Castle that is situated high on the cliffs overlooking the rest of the city. Then, we went out to dinner, did a bit more walking around town, and called it a day. It was a great way to end our shortest day of cycling on our self-guided bicycle tour with Portugal Nature Trails.
