Leeds West Indian Carnival king and queen crowned
Video Leeds West Indian Carnival celebrates its 50th anniversary
22 August 2017
Leeds West Indian Carnival has elected its king and queen as the event celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Eleanor Claxton, 27 and Athan Martin, 21, were picked after a competition at West Yorkshire Playhouse.
Ms Claxton, from Chapel Allerton, was crowned with her costume Hellfire Heaven Reign, which involves a dancing devil that turns into a angel.
The winners will lead the carnival parade on its way around the city from Potternewton Park on Monday.
Mr Martin, from Leicester, was chosen as king with his costume Splendour of the Glorious Sunset.
Ms Claxton, who was crowned carnival princess twice when she was a child, said it had been a difficult couple of months working on her costume.
She said: I've been up till daft o' clock every day this week and it's all been worth it.
Her outfit was designed by Leeds-based carnival artist Hughbon Condor, whose costumes have won half of the last 30 carnival queen competitions.
The West Indian Carnival started in 1967 and has since taken place every year.
It takes place over three days of the bank holiday weekend and culminates with the parade on the streets of Chapeltown and Harehills, with an attendance often estimated at about 150,000.

Leeds West Indian Carnival
The first West Indian carnival in Europe was founded in Leeds in 1967 by Arthur France, who remembers the first year being packed — with people who thought his mad idea would never work. Now nearing its 50th anniversary, Leeds Carnival attracts 100,000 party people to Potternewton Park every year.

Man murdered on carnival road
Leeds man murdered on carnival road A 21-year-old man was murdered on a road on which Leeds West Indian Carnival was due to take place. West Yorkshire Police were called to Chapeltown Road at 22:00 BST on Sunday, where a man was found seriously injured near the Button Hill junction. He was given emergency treatment, but was pronounced dead at Leeds General Infirmary. An 18-year-old man, found seriously injured nearby, was arrested on suspicion of murder. The murder happened after a pre-carnival event. Carnival organiser Mahalia France said the killing was not connected to the main carnival. More Yorkshire stories The police cordon meant Monday's J'Ouvert parade had to be diverted. One eyewitness told the BBC the man who died was stabbed in the stomach. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later. Police said the arrested man was treated in hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening. The carnival parade was due to pass along Chapeltown Road on its 4.5 mile journey from Potternewton Park. Ms France said the carnival was started 52 years ago by Leeds student Arthur France because Britain's post-war West Indian community needed to assert its cultural identities in a sometimes unwelcoming society. Supt Nick Smart, in charge of policing for the carnival, said anyone with information about the assault or circumstances leading up to it should contact the police. He said: It is obviously vital that [the scene] is fully and comprehensively examined for evidence, but we will be doing everything we can to minimise the disruption this may cause to the local community. We hope people understand how important it is that this young man's murder is properly investigated and that the scene will need to be kept in place for as long as is necessary. Leeds West Indian Carnival Parade - Chapel Town 2014
Hey everyone! Here is some footage from the Leeds West Indian Carnival that took place on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2014 :) I've never been to the Carnival before so my mum and I decided to check it out :) We were basically parked up near the Reginald Centre in Harehills (or is it Chapeltown) and admired the awesome parade. We also had some yummy Jerk Chicken with rice, peas and gravy. Oh, and I also had a dumpling too (which was yummy!)
I know this isn't like a proper vlog, but I still wanted to share the videos that I took and you guys can feel the atmosphere through your computer screens! :D
The Leeds Carnival, also called the Leeds West Indian Carnival or the Chapeltown Carnival, is the longest running West Indian carnival in Europe, having been going since 1967. The carnival is held in the Chapeltown and Harehills parts of Leeds every August bank holiday[1] weekend. Attendance is estimated at about 150,000.[2]
It is a 3-day event, climaxing in a carnival procession on Bank Holiday Monday, which starts and finishes in Potternewton Park in Chapeltown. A parade of floats and dancers makes its way along Harehills Avenue, down Roundhay Road in Harehills, along Barrack Road and back along Chapeltown Road to the park, where a wide range of stages and stalls provide entertainment and refreshment for carnival-goers. Since 2005 this event has been covered by BBC Radio 1Xtra in conjunction with Notting Hill Carnival.[3]

The West Indies Federation, also known as the Federation of the West Indies, was a short-lived political union that existed from 3 January 1958 to 31 May 1962. Various islands in the Caribbean that were colonies of the United Kingdom, including Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, and those on the Leeward and Windward Islands, came together to form the Federation, with its capital in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The expressed intention of the Federation was to create a political unit that would become independent from Britain as a single state—possibly similar to the Canadian Confederation, Australian Commonwealth, or Central African Federation; however, before that could happen, the Federation collapsed due to internal political conflicts. The territories of the federation eventually became the nine contemporary sovereign states of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago; with Anguilla, Montserrat, the Cayman Islands, and Turks and Caicos Islands becoming British overseas territories. British Guiana (Guyana) and British Honduras (Belize) held observer status within the West Indies Federation.
