The Andrew Johnson National Monument was authorized by Congress in 1935, established by Franklin Roosevelt in 1942, and redesignated the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site in 1965. The four main areas of the site, the Tailor Shop, the National Cemetery, the Homestead, and the Early Home went through several variations before being brought under one authority. The War Department originally oversaw the National Cemetery, and the state of Tennessee protected the Tailor Shop. Thanks to the dedication and on-going political saavy of the Johnson descendants, the legacy of the 17th President is now the responsibility of the National Park Service.
The site tells the story of a tumultuous time in history - the effects of which we still feel today. It also tells the story of a family that grew with the nation and endured the Civil War and the struggles of Reconstruction.

President George Washington | Deshler-Morris | Germantown White House
Hello Fellow Adventurers!! To Zoe and Beth's surprise, while running errands, they saw The Germantown White House open for tours and decided to stop in!
Also known as the Deshler-Morris house, the Germantown White House is the oldest executive mansion (presidential residence) in the country. Occupied twice by President George Washington, in the fall of 1793 and the summer of 1794, the house is located at 5442 Germantown Avenue, near Chelten Avenue in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia.
In 1793, Washington met with his cabinet here, and together, they conducted the nation's business and addressed issues of foreign policy. Attending were Thomas Jefferson (State), Alexander Hamilton (Treasury), Henry Knox (War) and Edmund Randolph (Attorney General).
During the summer of 1794 Washington returned to the home, with servants and his family. The enslaved servants included Oney Judge, Hercules and many others. Oney Judge served as seamstress and personal servant to Martha Washington. Hercules prepared meals for the family.
Come with us as we discover this 18th century house and the stories that live in it! Come on!
